Newspaper analysis Deanna Carden

The first newspaper which I am going to be analyzing is the Daily

Telegraph. This is owned by Telegraph Media Group and they also
own the Sunday Telegraph. The genre of this newspaper is mainly
political as it is aimed at a higher audience where they would want to
be looking at more political issues compared to other newspapers. The
newspaper is published every day apart from Sunday where it is then
the Sunday Telegraph which is published weekly. The purpose of the
newspaper is to inform the reader, some of the news stories which
are covered are more on the political side. You can tell this by some of
the journalists which work for the newspaper where they have
positions such as senior political editor. The Daily Telegraph is also
known as the ‘Torygraph’ due to their continuing support of the
Conservative party and when articles about the Conservatives such as
the whole deal surrounding Brexit then they shed the information in a
more positive light towards the party.

The primary target audience for the newspaper is going to be mainly be between the
ages of 55-80. I have chosen this age range because they are going to be the more
sophisticated age group who are going to read the newspaper. This is because they
would understand some of the jargon which is used throughout the newspaper. The
secondary audience for the newspaper is going to be 30-54. I have chosen this age
range because they have a high ranking job and they would want to read a newspaper
where it would reflect their standing in society. Another reason which they might enjoy
reading this type of newspaper is because if they are politically minded then they would
want honest articles surrounding the article. The possible tertiary audience is just
people in waiting rooms at a dentistry, doctors or otherwise and they would be waiting
for their appointment and looking for something to read then they might pick up this
newspaper and just have a quick read through it whilst waiting. The geodemographic for
the newspaper is on a national level, but there is possibly going to be a higher
concentration of people reading this newspaper in and around London as it is more
political and more to do with business news so there would be a higher circulation in
around those areas. The socio-economic groupings is going to be covering all of the
groups from A-E. I have chosen this because it covers the old age pensioners in the
primary target audience and I have chosen the highest range of the groupings because
it is a known fact quite high up business people such as CEOs of national corporations
and royalty reads this particular newspaper as well. The psychographics for the
newspaper is going to be succeeders as they seek control and they are typically higher
management and professionals. Another psychographic to consider is mainstreamers
because it is the largest group and it would covers all of the lower end of the socio-
economic groupings as well.

Some of the different formats in which the newspaper comes in is print based where
you have a physical copy of the newspaper in front of you. Another format the
newspaper can be consumed in is on their website where the news would be more up
to date because it is easier to be published and if there is any developments in the
news story which was printed then they would be able to update the story with new
information. One other platform is the use of social media where the Daily telegraph has
its own Twitter page and they are publishing different articles and news updates and
then people is able to access it more quickly. With the use of social media as well as
online it is able to attract a younger audience compared to reading the print
format.

There is a difference in how the news is reported in different newspapers, for instance
the main news on the front cover of broadsheets are usually political and they are
talking about current affairs such as Brexit, but in other newspapers such as the Sun
where their front cover focused on a member of parliament separating from his girlfriend
where there are more pressing news stories, and other smaller articles such as ‘the
strictly curse’.

The size of the publication is broadsheet and this is so they are able to get more of the
information and it separates itself from other newspapers such as the Daily Mirror and
the Sun because they are tabloid papers so you are able to differentiate the different
newspapers. The style of the front page is quite a simple one where they have the main
article where it would attract the most attention. With it mainly being black which they
use throughout the front cover, the connotations which you gain from it is the formality
and the elegance behind the paper which fits in with the type of audience which reads
this newspaper. There is also the use of one big picture on the front cover which is used
to attract the attention of the audience when they are shopping or when they have their
paper delivered to their door. The framing of the image on the front cover is a
‘selfie’ of which the person on the front cover of the newspaper has taken. This
adds emotions to the article which is underneath the picture where it is talking
about the recent flu epidemic and since she was only 18 years old when she
passed away due to the flu epidemic. This single use of the image goes with the main
article which they are talking about on the front cover usually. Other images which are
used on the front cover is usually at the top of the newspaper where it supports an
article which is later on in the newspaper. For instance the top images which is used at
the top of this issue of this newspaper is a picture from the ‘Darkest Hour’ which Gary
Oldman playing Churchill and it is an film review article which is later on in the paper.
The masthead is quite a plain masthead compared to others but it fits in with the type of
newspaper it is. The type of font which has been used for the newspaper is a serif font,
Newspaper analysis Deanna Carden

this is used because of it being associated as a font where it is quite a posh font
and it is quite a tidy font for this type of publication and with this it appeals to a
higher socio-economic groupings. The graphology of the front cover is somewhat a
simple one where they have the main article and the headline for it and then the layout
of the article is in easy to read columns. There are lines to break up the different articles
so you don’t get confused with them.

This follows through the newspaper where you get to the double page spread where it is
continued to be used. There is the use of images where they support the article which
they are for. The images which have been used are pictures of Churchill where they are
talking about the different styles which we saw Churchill have throughout the duration of
the war. The other image which has been used is an image from the film the ‘Darkest
Hour’ where it goes with the article with it being a film review about it. The typography
which has been used is a simple one where the information has been sorted into
columns and it makes it easier for people to read. There is also a line breaker where
you can tell the difference between the articles which is next to it. Some of the linguistic
codes which have been used is a formal language as this is a paper with a high
reputation for being for the upper class so it needs to maintain that standard. Through
the use of a formal language as is with the reputation of this particular newspaper
you can gage the educational level of which the audience has when reading this
article which is university level and they would currently have high ranking jobs
or they have retired from high ranking jobs. The framing of the images in this
article are mainly candid shots from the journalists during the time of which
Winston Churchill was Prime Minister. These images have been used to further
the point of the film review of the ‘Darkest Hour’ which a picture on the other side
of the page is used. The way that this image has been framed is a mid shot where
it has Gary Oldman as Churchill in the very centre of the image. This in itself is
striking because his eyes are directly looking at the audience as to say come and
watch this film. The advertisement have been used on the double page spread
reflects on the type of audience of which would read the newspaper. Some of the
advertisement is the Daily Telegraph offering tickets to go to the theatre, and
Newspaper analysis Deanna Carden

there is an advert as well for the young children where their grandparents would
be thinking of taking them to go and see Peppa Pig. There is an advert for a set of
knives as well which are only exclusive to Daily Telegraphy readers online.

The second newspaper which I am going to be analyzing is the Target which is

a local paper. The genre of this newspaper is going to be more for the local
news or if there is any national news which affects the local area then they are
going to have a twist to the story. The frequency of the newspaper is weekly,
this is because of it being quite a small area to focus on then there isn’t going
to be as much news as on a national scale. The purpose of the newspaper is to
convey the news on a local scale and the articles are just about different
events or crimes which have happened in the area. There is also news stories
about housing which is meant to be built up in areas where there is going to be
negative comments to it because of how popular the area is or the area is
better left and not be used for housing.

The target audience for this newspaper is 30-60 year olds. I have chosen this age range
because of the type of news which the newspaper covers. This is because they are the
more likely people to read it as they would be more interested in reading the local paper
compared to the younger generation. The possible secondary audience could possibly
be 15-29 year olds. This is because there could be some form of news which would be
interesting in a news story. An example would be the issue with the schooling and the
students are wanting to know more about what has been happening and if there is any
more information which has been told to a journalist rather than the students
themselves. The geo-demographics for the paper is local, you can tell this because of
the title of the newspaper, ‘East Lindsey and The Wolds Target’ so this gives you a
specific area of Lincolnshire which the newspaper covers. The socio-economic grouping
for the paper is going to be C1-E as this covers the age range but it would be more
likely the C2-C1 which would read this newspaper. The product meets their demands
for having a trustworthy newspaper where the information which they are reporting is
true and correct. Since this is a little local paper, there isn’t another format in which you
are able to access the newspaper as it is only available in print format. However, there
is another newspaper where they do have a website you are able to get more up to date
news.

The size of the publication is a tabloid size and the style of writing is on the border of
being informal as well as formal. It isn’t as rigorous in its language it uses compared to
the Daily Telegraph where they are on the formal side. The content and the style of the
newspaper is the masthead is in a sans-serif font which separates it out from other
newspapers where they use a serif type font. Other features on the front page is there
Newspaper analysis Deanna Carden

are many adverts as this is a small funded paper so they require quite a bit of
advertisement or sponsorship so they are able to afford the printing and the distribution
of the newspaper. There is a large headline which would gain the attraction of the
audience at what has been happening. It is the most dominating element on the page
as it is a crime which doesn’t really happen around this area since it’s a small farmer’s
market part of the county in which there isn’t much crime happening to this magnitude.
The linguistic codes which have been used is a formal language but it has a borderline
informal language behind it. Through the use of formal language but there is a bit of
an informal language behind it can gages on the audiences education level. The
level would possibly be managers, doctors, nurses and anything which would fit
into type of education which the reader would have possibly had.
Other codes and conventions which have been used is the images which have been
used where it is images of the people which were affected in what happened in the
article.

This continues on with the double page spread of the newspaper where they have used
images to convey the message of the articles. The image which they have used for the
article is a person going into a car which matches with what the article is about because
it is warning people about car thieves in the area, and they have found a new key trick
so it would make it easier to steal cars. The other article it has pictures from the scene
which the article is about and it adds feeling to the article as it is talking about how
rescuers had rescued a cat from a disgusting place it
called a home and this adds emotion to the story. There is
the use of advertisement on the double page spread which
is a common occurrence in this newspaper because of the
lack of money for the paper. The blue box on the left hand
side is a little biography about the journalists which work
for the paper and it also has contact information about how
you are able to contact them if you are wanting to them to
report on a story for you. There are smaller news stories,
these are national news which have been twisted to add a
local twist to the story where it affects the area. The one at the bottom of the left page
article it is about the virus which has been reported on nationally, but it has been
changed so it talked about how many phones in this area is going to be affected.
Newspaper analysis Deanna Carden

The way that a newspaper is distributed is it starts with the journalist will pick a
story which is of interest to them and then they research the story using different
sources and then arrange an interview with someone relevant to the story they
are going to be writing and then they are going to be writing up the story for it
then to be passed onto their editor for them to read through it to make sure that it
is alright to be published and then it is passed up to the department where they
put all of the stories together and place it into a template. The photographer
would then go out and take the pictures which are relevant to the story which the
journalist is going to be produced. This is then placed onto a page or pages in the
newspaper for it then to be printed. When this is put together then it is then sent
over to the printers for them to mass produce the paper for it to then distribute to
the newsagents and supermarkets for them to sell to the public. The way
newspapers in general is distributed is by using an inkjet printer, where they have
the paper going through a printer where it is then injected with the CMYK colour
scheme, the paper is then dried but because of how the ink dries out it then
sometimes rubs off on your fingers when you are reading the paper.

With the newspaper website, it is different.

The purpose of the website is the same as
the newspaper where it is talking about the
news but it is going to be more up to date
compared to the print addition. You are
then able to keep up to date with the news
if you were following it in the paper. The
company which owns the website is Trinity
Mirror which also covers local papers such
as the one before. The website is updated
every often so if there is a breaking news
story then it can provide more information.

The primary audience for the website is going to be 25-40 year olds, this is because it is
a paper which more of the lower class would read compared to other newspaper such
as the Daily Telegraph. The secondary audience for the website is going to be 16-24
year olds, this is because it is accessible on social media they might have seen an
article about something and wanting to get more up to date information compared to
what they have seen on social media. The socio-economic groupings is going to be E-
C1. This is because the higher class of groupings would read more intellectual papers
such as the Guardian and the Daily Telegraph. The geo-demographics is going to be
international because of it being online, however, it is going to be a more nationwide
Newspaper analysis Deanna Carden

audience which would look at the website because it is news which pertains to this
country more than other countries.

The style of the website is it has a slider where you can go through the different stories
which is dominating the news and then you can select the one that takes your interest.
There are the different categories which you can select so it can narrow down your
search for news stories to read. The different colours which have been used have their
own codes and conventions behind them. With the logo and with the main colour being
red, it tells you it is a more gossip news as different gossip newspaper and magazines
use this colour. The colour black for where the different categories is adds a mystery to
it as you don’t know what type of news is really going on in the world. The font which
has been used is a sans serif font, this is so you can easily read the font on the
computer, tablet or smartphone.

The images which have been used are the people which the article is about. In this case
it is a doctor and how he delivered a baby mid-flight when a woman went into labour.
The image adds meaning to the article, because it is accompanied with other images
where one was taken at the time it was all happening on the plane so it would add an
emotional response to the article and possibly the women who are reading the article
are able to sympathize with the woman who went into labour.

The type of language which has been used for this publication is a formal
Language and this type of language has been used because it is a national
publication and because of the reputation which the newspaper has. The headline
Newspaper analysis Deanna Carden

of the article tells the story in the headline, but because of the shock factor where
he had to deliver a baby whilst mid-flight would gain the attention of people
scrolling through the website.

When analyzing this article, the language which has been used for this article is in a
formal language but not an overly formal language. This separates out the difference
between the different newspapers such as the Daily Telegraph where the language
used is very formal to show what type of audience would read them. The article would
be more aimed at the audience and it tells the audience what type of newspaper it is
where it is talking about Celebrity Big Brother and it would typically be the lower
economic groupings which would read this article. With the headline, with it being
straight to the point with it talking about a TV show which stirs up controversy when
being aired would gain the attention and people would want to know why it was being
cancelled. The subheading basically sums up what the article is about but the readers
would continue on reading so they are able to get the full information.

The image which has been used is an image which is instantly recognizable for Big
Brother, which gives the feeling of familiarity and it keeps in with the theme of the article
so it would make more sense to the reader. There is the option to share the article on
social media sites as well, so the news is going to be easily shared, and then more
people would be attracted to the article through this method as well.

The difference between the different newspapers which I have analyzed shows the
difference in the audiences which they are trying to attract. With the Daily Telegraph,
the type of audience which they are attracting are people who are very politically
minded, compared to the Mirror Online where they are attracting a different type of
audience where they are looking at a lower class of audience and the types of news
which is reported is different as well. With the Target, it is just for a specialized localized
areas so this would attract a local audience for the people where they are living
compared to if you were living in a different area, then gaining access to this type of
local news would have be found using other news outlets online.

The production process for the app is that the journalist would gather the
knowledge behind the story and use that knowledge to write the story. They
would then get a photographer to get the pictures that they are needing to go with
the story, but if it is a story about a celebrity or a major disaster then they would
get into contact with the person that had published the image onto social media
for permission to use as well. This is then sent to the editor for them to read it
and to give it the green light for it to be published onto the app and then people
who are employed to update the app where they are sent the stories that the
Newspaper analysis Deanna Carden

journalists have written for it to then be published onto the app where the public
is able to read it.
