Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will learn and explore in depth the fundaments of art that are important to understanding art expressions and usage of various techniques.
Develop the usage of words used to describe artworks. Understand color theory and line use.

Unit Summary:
In this unit, students will learn basic skills of art such as color usage, line quality and shading techniques. Beginning with arranging shapes and forms,
students will build on drawing and observation skills. Students will begin to be familiar and be able to use art terminology when critiquing another
students’ work. In groups, students will explore art movements and analyze the distinctive techniques used during the time. As students build basic skills,
they will develop their first studio work and organize their entire process into a portfolio.

Lesson Activities:
As we begin with the basic foundations of art, students will create their own color wheels as
their first project in the class. This will take up to two weeks as we add terms that are necessary
to describing colors. In addition to the wheels will be a large grid that students will be painting
on a canvas. Students will label the rows and columns of color as they complete a value chart for
each color they create from the primary colors.

Lesson Activities:
Students will observe several paintings by various artists and find elements of art that had been
used for their composition. At the lab station, students will select five images to make their
observations on. On the provided worksheet, students will name the artist, make a simple sketch
of the image and list all the elements that they find was used in the artwork.

Lesson Activities:
On the provided class page, students will choose three art movements that they want to self-
study on in their own chosen groups of three. Students will draft a van diagram of all the
information they will need to make comparisons. Students are then responsible for designing a
project board and presenting it to the class using the art elements to make their project board
attractive and interesting. After the group has presented, students will ask questions and
provide feedback on their project boards. Students will then revise their project boards and
bring it back to be displayed in class like a miniature museum.
Students will spend time to carefully design a series of work that displays five of the same image
that they have created. Based off the art movement studies, students will reference
compositions and techniques to find inspiration. Each image will be colored differently using the
color techniques gone over in class. Students will submit a portfolio of their work process that
includes references and three short artists researches from the movements they did research
on. As a class, students must participate in critiquing other students’ work by giving good
feedback to at least five students. The critique must cover what was successful and what needs
to be improved on using the proper art terms. Comment such as “I like your work” is not an
insightful critique.
