knowledge including some
issues and challengers
related to assessment
literacy.
In education, we have
these so called
stakeholders. We will get a
glimpse on how these
stakeholders view
assessment. First, the
students, where in they see
assessment as something
that teachers do to test
their knowledge. Some of
them view assessment as a
pressure but for some, it is
enjoyable depending on
the tool used. Next are the
teachers who have the
same idea as the students
and according to a
research conducted by
Jacobs and Chase (1992),
teachers found it the least
pleasant part of their job.
Last is the educational
board's view, for them
assessment literacy I'd one
of the most important
aspect of the teacher's
proffesional knowledge.
According to the
researchers on assessment
literacy conducted by
many researches, most of
the teachers don't have the
needed skill in assessment
literacy. Aside from
researchers, surveys are
also conducted and
showed the same result.
Assessment Literacy,
according to Popham
(2004) and Stiggins (2002),
is being aware of the
principles of the sound
assessment. Assessment
literacy is when a teacher
have the mastery needed
in assessing their students
and their learning.
When you expand your
knowledge you are also
helping yourself in a way
that you will know how to
improve your instruction.
We also have the
barriers in assessment
literacy. According to
Stiggins (1995), the fear
that when assessment is
heard it comes out to be
negative. According to
Alderson (2001), some
journals are not accessible
to the average classroom
teachers and last is the
insufficient resources
allocated to assessment.
To be assessment
literate, there are
assessment skills needed.
To sum it up, teachers
should be skilled I'm
choosing appropriate
method, knowing how to
communicate the results
and having the specific
target.
In achieving assessment
literacy, some
recommendations are
understanding what s
good assessment is,
enough time for
development of
assessment literacy and
taking into account the
learning styles.
Teachers of the future
or the 21st century learners
are expected to be
assessment literate.
