DOMAIN D LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

This literature review describes the two artifacts in my Professional Development Quest

Portfolio (PDQP) in Domain D. Domain DC includes TPE 8 and TPE 9; it focuses on “Planning

Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for Students” (Commission on Teacher

Credentialing, "California Teaching Performance Expectations", 2013, p. 15). The first artifact is

an example of a first day of school project I would do with my students. The second artifact is a

5th grade Language Arts lesson plan. The third artifact is a formal observation from my master

teacher during my student teaching process. I have discussed the rationale of using these specific

artifacts in my PDQP.

TPE Domain D Artifact Literature Review

According to Constantino and Lorenzo (2009) “Using national or state standards when

developing a portfolio provides credibility to the documentation” (p.11). I will be using the

California Teaching Performance Expectations as a guide to populate my PDQP. The California

TPE Domain D is “Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for Students”

(Commission on Teacher Credentialing, "California Teaching Performance Expectations", 2013,

p. 15). My PDQP can be found at: https://rodamer-pdqp.weebly.com/

Artifact 1

Artifact 1 is an example of a project I would use on the first day of school. The simple

All About Me activity allows students to express to the teacher who they are in a creative outlet.

This artifact is just an example, it would need to be designed for the age appropriate grade level I

will be teaching in. For example, a kindergartener would probably not be able to read or write

and would need to draw their expressions. An upper grade student might want to express more

details about themselves other than favorite color.

It is important to get to know your students on both and academic and personal level.

While knowing your students on an academic level helps you design and implement appropriate

lessons to help them meet standards. Knowing your students on a personal level will allow you

to reach them easier and understand what they may be going through. Their personal lives will

affect their academics. This artifact demonstrates that I believe in the importance of TPE 8:

Learning about Students.

Artifact 2

Artifact 2 is a 5th grade Language Arts lesson that I planned. I feel that this artifact

demonstrates my ability to plan instruction based on state adopted content standards, TPE 9. TPE

9 states “Candidates plan instruction that is comprehensive in relation to the subject matter to be

taught and in accordance with state-adopted academic content standards for students” (CTC,

2013, p 16).

Artifact 9

The third artifact I included for Domain D of my PDPQ is a formal observation written

by my master teacher during my student teaching experience. I completed my second placement

student teaching in a kindergarten classroom located in Fremont, California. My master teacher

gave me high scores across all domains, including Domain D which was Integrating.

According to Constantino and Lorenzo (2009) “Good teaching is and will always be a

matter of sound planning and preparation, able classroom management, attention to quality

instruction, and taking responsibility for continuous profession growth” (p.xiii).
