Beginning October 4, 2004, an edge guard (part No. 12AX149) was implemented into
production. The guard is installed over the rolled edge of the bracket to prevent the
harnesses from rubbing against the sharp edge. Beginning December 2004, a revised
transmission ECU mounting bracket (part No. 36QB419AM) was implemented into
production. The edge of this revised bracket is rolled inward and does not require the edge
guard.

Should rubbing and subsequent intermittent short circuit problems (as evidenced by a 5-1 or
9-2 fault code) be encountered on a chassis manufactured prior to October 2004, repair as
follows:
1. Inspect the harness wires for damage. If damage is found, remove the wire from the
ECU connector.
2. If the wire strands are damaged or broken, repair by cutting the damaged area from the
wire and then spicing the ends together using a solder-type butt connector.
3. Slide a length of heat shrink tubing (long enough to protect the damaged area) over the
wire.
4. Locate the shrink tubing over the damaged area, and then use a heat gun to shrink the
tubing in place.
5. Reconnect the wire to the ECU connector.
6. Install a 9앨 (229 mm) length of edge guard (part No. 12AX149) over the rolled edge of
the bracket.
For warrantable repairs, the labor code and maximum labor allowance are as follows:
723 5A ZB 80 ..................................................... 0.5 hr. — Time allowed to repair damaged wire(s) and
install edge guard over rolled edge of
transmission ECU mounting bracket. Does not
include “take-charge” time.
Mack Trucks, Inc. engages in a continuous program of testing and evaluating to provide the
