Problem What are the products of fermentation?

statement:
Hypothesis: In the absence of oxygen, yeast undergoes anaerobic respiration to
produce carbon dioxide, ethanol and energy.
Variables: Manipulated variable: Presence of yeast.
Responding variables: Changes in limewater and temperature.
Fixed variable: Anaerobic condition.
Materials: 5% yeast suspension, 5% glucose solution, paraffin oil and limewater
Apparatus: Boiling tubes, test tubes, thermometers, stoppers with delivery tubes,
measuring cylinders and a beaker.
Diagram:

Procedure: 1. Heat the glucose solution in a beaker. Let the solution cool.
2. Fill boiling tube A with 5 ml of yeast suspension. Then, add 15
ml of boiled glucose solution to it.
3. Fill boiling tube B with 15 ml of boiled glucose solution only.
4. Add a thin layer of paraffin oil to both test tubes.
5. Connect the stoppers with delivery tubes to their respective
boiling test tubes
6. Fill two test tubes with 2 ml of limewater. Then, place each
end of delivery tubes into the respective test tubes.
7. Record the initial temperatures of the contents of the boiling
tubes A and B.
8. Leave the set-up for one hour.
9. After one hour, record the final temperatures and observe the
change in limewater.
10. Remove the stoppers and smell the gas that comes out from the
boiling tubes.
11. Record the results.

Discussions: 1. A thin layer of oil is added on the surface of the yeast solution
to prevent oxygen from entering, making it an anaerobic
condition.
2. The glucose is boiled to get rid of the oxygen molecules in the
glucose solution to make the anaerobic condition perfect.
3. The setting up of test tube B is to let us see the difference
between the two test tubes with and without the yeast solution.
4. In boiling tube A, the limewater become chalky after one hour
while the limewater in boiling tube B remain clear.
5. The chalky limewater in the test tube A shew the presence of
carbon dioxide, meaning that the yeast solution has gone
through respiration process and this process is done without the
presence of oxygen, which means it has gone through
anaerobic respiration.
6. Therefore, anaerobic respiration has occur in boiling tube A.
Conclusion: In the absence of oxygen, yeast undergoes anaerobic respiration to
produce carbon dioxide, ethanol and energy.
