Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
BrainPop is accessible at home for students of all ages. It is not only accessible to the students but to parents
as well. BrainPop supports many different languages in which it provides support for students and parents
learning English. BrainPop not only supports ESL students, but also students with audio or visual learning
disabilities. Most of its features offer varying levels of access and expression. When creating a concept map,
students can choose between audio, text, and images.

Lesson idea implementation:

The BrainPop video will be used to introduce the parts of a plant. After watching the video, I will provide
real flowering plants for the students and have them observe closely at the parts the of the plant in which we
will have a discussion on why each part is important. I will ask the students questions like “What do the roots

do?” “What purpose do the leaves serve?” “What does the flower do?” and “What does the stem do?” I will
provide the students with charts to record what they’ve learned about plant parts and functions.
The students will then be split into small groups in which they will be tasked to complete a “Four Plant Part
Flip book” activity where they will document the parts and functions of a plant. The students will be provided
with the material, in which they will label the four major parts of a plant and also illustrate the part. When
they open each flap, they will have written a short summary/description of the plant part.
While students are actively working, I will use this time to check for accurateness while ensuring that the
students are staying on topic. If there are any students struggling, I will use this time to scaffold. To bring the
lesson to a close, I will have a discussion with the students as a whole on what they’ve learned about the
parts of plants and their functions.

Reflective Practice:
To extend the lesson, I would split students up in groups of 4, assigning each member in each group a plant
part. The students will then play “What am I” by describing the function/importance of their part and having
the other group members guess. Students could also use different material provided to create their very own
plants, being sure to include all the major components.
