RSHL MIDI SMART

Simple to Install and Set up

What can be simpler than connecting 3 supply cables
into the soft starter and 3 load cables out to the motor?
All the rest is packaged inside the RSHL!

• The RSHL Smart is a single component with a

45mm wide housing that can be DIN-rail mounted in
a relatively small enclosure space
• Since the overload protection is integrated, there is no
need to mount and wire an external motor overload
• A selection of Ramping Programs is already
prepared to facilitate typical setup
• An Automatic Current Limit program is available.
The user can adjust the desired limit level to match
the application demands.
• A comprehensive scheme of load monitoring, self
diagnostics and alarm outputs guarantees safe and
reliable operation

Compact Design
The RSHL Smart boasts of a space saving, IP20
housing that fits in a width of 45mm and can be
mounted on a standard DIN rail. While being very
compact the device also provides for a number of
Smart features.

The RSHL controls two of the phases and has

integrated bypassing relays that bypass the semi-
conductors between ramping operations. This
provides an added advantage that the semi-
conductors are relieved from duty during prolonged
running of the motor, thus reducing the heat inside
the panel, increasing the efficiency and the lifetime of
the system. It is not necessary to control all three
phases to ensure high switching performance.

A two-phase solution reduces cost and space.

For inside-delta connection, three-phase control
is needed.

RSHL SMART ...
How does it function? Operating Range
On receiving the control signal, the RSHL performs a “ramp up” The RSHL Smart can be used with
operation during a user defined time duration. The voltage to the 3-phase AC motors covering 220, 400,
motor is increased from a user selected level up to the full line 480 and 600VAC in 50 and 60Hz
voltage. This gradual increase has both electrical and mechani- networks. The current range includes 2,
cal benefits. When control is removed, the RSHL ramps down 5, 12 and 18Arms at 60ºC.
the load voltage, preventing sudden vibrations in equipment.

What about Wye-Delta starters?

The classical Wye-Delta starter consists of a number of components that are interlinked together by a various
cable connections. Although extremely popular, it has some inherent limitations:

• Its switching system involves moving contacts that are prone to deterioration and have a limited lifespan
• The switch-over from wye to delta generates unwanted current spikes
• It is not always capable of providing smooth mechanical drive motion
• It offers no benefits during stopping
• It takes up precious space in the electrical panel
Peak Current Reduction
By limiting high currents caused during motor
starting, consumers reduce the load on supply
networks. Energy utility companies are encouraging
this practice with advantageous billing schemes.
RSHL can help consumers benefit from these lower
energy cost incentives. The RSHL Smart comes with
a number of preset programs, providing a selection of
different start/stop times, initial voltage, ramp profi-
les, which are conveniently selected to cover the
majority of load applications. In addition the RSHL
Smart can start motors using the Current Limit fun-
ction. In this mode, the user is able to choose from
four different current levels, depending on the type of
load.
Limit Level = I 52.5A (350%)

INominal = 15A

Integrated Overload Protection

One of the advantages of the
RSHL Smart is that it comes
equipped with Electronic Overload
Protection.

In the installation the user saves cost

when eliminating the external motor
overload protection. The user is able
to select between Class 10 and
Class 20 protection. The device also
includes an overload test button. In
this case the motor load is
disconnected and the device
simulates an overload function. This
function is very useful to verify
operation in an overload situation.
Monitoring Alarms and Indications
The RSHL Smart is not just a simple soft starter. This
versatile device is also capable of providing diagnostic
information that simplifies installation, use and fault
finding. On the facia the user finds eight LEDs which
indicate the status of respective alarms. The user is able
to select if alarms are to have manual or automatic reset.

3-Phase Supply Monitoring

RSHL monitors
• Phase sequence
• Phase loss
• Phase imbalance

These are three fundamental conditions to ensure that

the motor has the correct power supply. This also helps
avoid damage to the motor.

Over-temperature Monitoring
If the motor is equipped with a PTC sensor
(Thermistor), this can be connected directly into
the RSHL Smart, providing a motor
over-temperature alarm function. The 18A
models also provide for a device over-
temperature alarm.

Motor PTC
RSHL MIDI SMART

Auxiliary Relays Outputs

The RSHL Smart also provides two Auxiliary Relay
outputs. One of these outputs becomes active
between the ramping operations while the other
becomes active during any alarm condition.

Motor Reversing
The RSHL offers the possibility to enable and disable
phase sequence monitoring for motor reversing
applications. This allows for the connection of a
reversing solid state relay or contactor between the
mains supply and the softstarter. It also allows auto-
matic softstart with every phase reversal without the
need for extra control of the softstarter.

Applications
The RSHL Smart is a general purpose softstarter.
Typical applications include pumps, compressors,
fans, hydraulic systems, conveyors, grinders, mills,
mixers, lathes, circular saws, machine tools, aera-
tors, granulators, shredders, bucket elevators, pal-
letisers, centrifuges, presses, wire drawing machi-
nes, agitators, industrial dryers and washing
machines, carousels, bottling machines, blowers,
car wash and can making machines.
Delivering Performance
Soft start / Soft stop - the best pro-
tection against motor and equip-
ment wear. Direct start or star delta
start are today’s most common
motor starters. Despite technical
improvements on motors as well
as contactors, jerky starting and
stopping could not be eliminated.
Damage to motor bearings and
gearboxes, premature wear, fre-
quent faults on conveyor belts and
goods which fall over when starting
transport mechanisims are some of
the consequences.

Motor Controllers
Typical Market Applications
Conveyor Belts
Conveyors are an essential component for the han-
dling of materials in a typical production process. A
Carlo Gavazzi Soft Start Motor Controller applies a
gradually increasing voltage to the conveyor motor,
eliminating starting shock and guaranteeing that
the product moves without losing balance, getting
misaligned or even falling over.

HVAC
Ambient temperatures in different environments are
kept uniform and cool by means of centrifugal or
propeller ventilators.
The control is generally enclosed inside small cabi-
nets and exposed to hot ambient temperatures.
For office/household units safety is an issue and a
Motor Controller with thermal protection and high
operating ambient temperature is the solution.

Compressors
Reciprocating compressors are used for high pres-
sure cleaning of tanks, vessels, sewer lines, boilers
and tubes, steel mill de-scaling and also paint
removal. Motor Controllers will prevent pressure
surges and extend the lifetime of piping systems,
valves and couplings.

Pumps
Pumps are used in an extremely wide variety
of applications. Direct-on-line starting can cause
interference to equipment such as computers and
lighting, located in close proximity to the pumps.
A Carlo Gavazzi Soft Start Motor Controller can
increase pump speed more gently, hence reducing
inrush current. When a pump is stopped suddenly,
the pressure surges and results in fluid hammer.
The Soft Starter eliminates this vibration within
the hydraulic system and reduces down-time and
maintenance costs.

Upon application of the control voltage, the RMD Series

output semiconductors switch the output after the load
voltage's sinusoidal sine wave crosses the zero cross-
ing point. This ensures that the switching current is kept
at the lowest possible levels. Milliseconds later, the
bypass mechanical relays close across the power
semiconductors. The switching-off procedure is a mirror
image of this and occurs as soon as control voltage is
removed from the input terminals of the hybrid relay.
Since the mechanical relay is switching on/off with a low
voltage across the contacts, no electrical arcing occurs
and this prevents contact migration, degradation and a
longer operating lifetime.

Long Term Reliability

Unlike contactors, the bypass relays used in the

RMD2/3H Series are hermetically sealed. This
makes them capable of operating in humid
environments and in areas were oil vapors are
present around the product. There are no issues with
clogging or sticking of moving mechanisms and no
impurities can be deposited onto the switching
contacts. Apart from the ability of withstanding four
million electrical cycles, the RMD2H and RMD3H are
also tested by UL with the 150,000 cycle test
according to UL508 requirements.

Push Buttons, Selector Switches and Pilot Lights
CARLO GAVAZZI has developed a new range of push buttons, selector switches Space
and pilot lights which provide a vast array of solutions for your ever increasing Optimization
application demands. Push buttons are mechanical switches that have their operating
head pushed down to actuate an electrical contact to a closed or open position.
They are typically used to start and/or stop electric circuits/devices such as lamps,
motors, etc. User
The main function of a pilot light is to quickly provide a visual indication when an Friendly
event occurs or to indicate an on or off state. The source of the light is a highly
efficient LED. Due to its ideal color rendering, the LED provides optimum visibility.
Additionally, it is reliable and provides a cost-savings due to its long lifetime.

The REC Series of Solid State Contactors

The REC Series of three-phase solid state motor contactors and reversers are designed to cope with all
these requirements. The motor current is switched by a robust combination of back-to-back power thyristors
(SCRs).

The output semiconductors will switch on instantaneously upon the application of a control input signal. The
solid state switch has an integrated heatsink that is enclosed in the plastic housing of the REC Series. This
eliminates the need for a protective earth (ground) connection, thus making the switch from a mechanical
contactor easier.

High Frequency Switching
Productivity requirements are continuously on the
increase and so is the reliability of the process. Unlike
mechanical contactors, the REC Series does not
exhibit any contact de-bouncing or contact
degradation by arcing. This leads to an excellent
response time between application of the control
signal to the REC and the switching of the output
semiconductors.

Long-Term Reliability
This is always a priority and is mostly needed in
processes where a system failure is costly since the
raw material being worked upon would have to be
scrapped.

The REC Series of solid state contactors

contributes to a decrease in maintenance costs, an
increase in process efficiency, as well as a decrease
in long term costs related to repair and contactor
replacements.

Easy to Install
The REC can be mounted on DIN-rail and also
directly to the enclosure back panel though the
mounting bracket.

Control voltage is applied through a detachable

input connector located on the front of the
contactor. The screw terminals for motor and mains
connection are similar to conventional mechanical
contactors. The REC2R Series features an
electronic interlock as a standard feature to prevent
simultaneous switching of two phases.
Space Saver
Typically, an electromechanical reversing contactor
consists of two contactors occupying a minimum
width of 90mm of panel space, together with a
timing/control module. With the REC2R Series, only
45mm is required, thus saving at least 50% of panel
space compared to a conventional electromechani-
cal reversing contactor assembly.

Accessories
A selection of motor overload relays can also be mounted directly to the electrical connection. The
adaptor can be snapped to the base of the REC Series in order to also provide a reliable and sturdy
mechanical connection between of the REC Series and the motor overload relay.

Market Applications

Lighting Control
Digital, high precision light dimming systems are
nowadays used in the entertainment industry.
Performances given in theatres, opera houses, TV
studios and concert halls are enhanced by a number
of special effects. RJ1P..MB can link up to a PC
based system to activate and control the intensity
of stage lights.

SWIR* Heaters
Using RJ1P..MB to control SWIR heaters in
thermoformers and drying applications in the printing
and spray painting industries

Engine compartment insulations, Passenger

compartment insulations, Roof liners, Floor carpets,
Seat back trims, Package trays, Complete luggage
compartment trims, Textile exterior wheel arc
liners….these are all car sections which can be done
by thermoforming process utilising SWIR heaters. By
means of an RJ1P..MB, data to and from these devi-
ces can be transmitted to other devices in the system.

Extended Production Line

RJ1P..MB is the ideal solution because it meets the
requirements at the factory floor for flexibility,
modularity and reliability and above all easy interfacing
to the IT-level. All values and alarms are transmitted
to a central monitoring PC with a SCADA system,
which transmits alarms and data to the maintenance
staff.

RJ Modbus
Functional Diagram and Modes of Operation

Mode 0 – ON/OFF control

In Mode 0 the relay operates as a stan-
dard ON/OFF relay with zero switch-
ing. In this mode the relay can deliver
either 0% or 100% power. This mode
is ideal for systems where the process
controller employs a digital process
variable, similar to that used in stan-
dard solid state relay applications.

Mode 1 – Phase angle control

In Mode 1 the load power is adjusted
by delaying the thyristor switching sig-
nal according to the required power.
The resulting output is a chopped
sine-wave. The relay switches itself off
every half cycle. Timings are calculat-
ed such that a linear power response
curve is obtained. This mode is suited
for loads where continuous control of
power is required.

Mode 2 – Distributed firing

In Mode 2 full cycles are switched
ON/OFF over a period of 256 mains
cycles. The number of cycles that are
switched ON corresponds to the value
specified in the load power register.
This mode uses an algorithm that dis-
tributes the ON cycles evenly over the
256 cycle period.

Mode 3 – Burst firing

In Mode 3 full cycles are switched
ON/OFF over a period of mains cycles
as defined by the Time-Base Register.
Mode 3 uses an algorithm that will
switch ON a number of cycles in a
continuous burst for a time period cor-
responding to the required power.

Plastic and Rubber

When a heater fails in an application that needs
optimal temperature regulation, the system's tem-
perature profile is altered. In the RJ1P..MB a load
current setpoint can be stored and continuously
monitored to ensure a more consistent temperatu-
re control by guaranteeing that all switched heater
loads are functioning 100%.

Food and Beverage Processing

Improper heating processes can spoil food. The
setup and monitoring of the RJ1P..MB can be done
from a remote PLC. In a typical production
environment, this gives full flexibility to change
setup and perform on-line monitoring via a remote
HMI (Human Machine Interface).

HVAC
In special purpose buildings such as museums and
medical or scientific laboratories, it is fundamental
to maintain the environment under control by con-
tinuously monitoring the current and voltage of
electric heaters used for climate control. RJ1P..MB
can be integrated into the Building Management
System and allows remote communication with a
simple bus cable.
Indications ...
A green LED on the front panel indicates presence of input
power supply by lighting at half intensity and indicates
load activation by lighting to full intensity. A flashing yel-
low LED indicates DATA transmission/reception and a red
LED indicates an alarm condition.

Networking and Communications
The RJ1P..MB supports the Modbus RTU communi-
cation protocol, operating over an EIA-485 interface.
Each device has two RJ45 sockets to facilitate daisy-
chaining of the Modbus network.

Through the bus interface, the user can remotely select

the Switching Mode that best suits the type of load,
from Burst Fire, Phase-Angle and Full Cycle. Duty
cycle can also be changed to favour load character-
istics.

The communication interface allows modification and

reading of several parameters very quickly through a
single connection. Diagnostic information is easily
accessible for trouble-shooting and repair.

Device addressing and communication parameters

can be modified by selecting DIP-switches, when the
facia panel is removed. Up to 247 devices can be
connected on the same bus with their addresses easily
configurable by means of a DIP-switch.

Self Diagnostic Features

RJ1P..MB has self-diagnostic features. It is able

to detect semiconductor over-temperature and
can be used to identify short circuit conditions.

There is no longer the need to preset alarm limits

during a “teach” operation, since current and vol-
tage measurements can now be transmitted back
to the controller and set-points can be entered
directly from an HMI. This closed-loop feedback
helps determine if the control system is functio-
ning to the required levels and enables a control-
ler to make the appropriate fine tuning.

Monitoring of true load current and voltage is

made possible through the use of integrated tran-
sducers.

Soft Starters

Where does the need for Scroll Compressor

Softstarters come from?

Scroll compressors have earned a strong reputation in HVAC

applications by proving to be a more reliable and efficient
solution than other categories of compressors. Scroll
compressors are generally 10 to 15% more efficient than piston
compressors. Worldwide initiatives promoting energy efficiency
in the building sector are generating a growing interest for
more cost saving and efficient HVAC solutions, making the use
of scroll compressors more and more a necessity.

The Problem Softstarter Solution...

Scroll compressors started via a direct on line (DOL) method Softstarters provide a means of reducing such high values of

Innovative Auto-adaptive Algorithm

The innovative auto-adaptive (patent pending) algorithm,

available as standard on all RSBT range, further enhances
RSBT’s capability of reducing starting current by up to 65%
when compared to DOL starting. Better still is the fact that
all of this is achieved without the need of any user settings.

The auto-adaptive feature is active all the time which

means that as the system ages or whenever the compressor
demands a higher current to start, RSBT will self-adjust its
parameters to ensure an optimum compressor start. All this
translates to fewer alarms, hence less service calls,
resulting in happier customers and a stronger reputation
for your business.

Modularity

Thanks to the modular design of the RSBT softstarter series, additional accessories are provided to
enhance the functional capabilites of the RSBT.

Prolonged life expectancy –
Utilizing direct copper bonding
Cutting edge manufacturers of solid state devices have started to change
from their previous production technology - the soldering of power
semiconductors on copper conductors which, in turn, are soldered on
a metallized ceramic disc and finally, to a copper or aluminum base - to
state-of-the-art substrate technology. By looking at the comparison in
the lower corner of this page, you will see - previously, at least four solder
joints between the output chip and the heat sink were required, whereas
the new production means has cut the number of solder joints in half.
This technology makes use of what is called a DCB (direct copper bond-
ing) substrate which, in terms of load change strength, is superior to
all previous techniques. The reduction in the number of required
components with the DCB substrate simplifies the production process
and improves the quality of the product.
