from one of the logs that serve as benches. Continue south
on the path that runs along the beach, which is popular with
joggers and rollerbladers. You’ll come to a stone sculpture in
a grassy area just off the path. This is an inukshuk, an ancient
symbol of Inuit culture that traditionally acted as a landmark

outstretched arms. The image is ubiquitous in the city since

The Museum of Anthropology at UBC recently completed a first phase of renovations and will
reveal even more redesigned spaces in early 2010. The museum is currently open and worth a
visit to view its treasure trove of First Nations carvings, artifacts and totem poles and European
ceramics.
Check out the Vancouver Maritime Museum’s collections and exhibits for an introduction to
Vancouver’s aquatic past including the legendary police schooner, St. Roch, the first vessel to
ever complete the famed Northwest passage in a west–east fashion. At the Vancouver Police
Museum, visitors can inspect confiscated weapons and counterfeit currency, as well as his-
toric vehicles and firearms used by the city’s police force.
Sports fans should head to The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. It’s the largest sports
museum in Canada, and it honours the legends of B.C. athletes and teams with 20 galleries
covering sports from the early 1800s to the present.
Vancouver locals and visitors have great fondness for the marine animals found in the
Vancouver Aquarium, one of the great aquariums in North America. The beluga whale tank is
particularly exciting, with its surface-level training sessions and underwater viewing room.
Playland Amusement Park at the historic Pacific National Exhibition is 15 acres of fun open
April through October. Its classic wooden roller coaster, built in 1958, continues to thrill guests
with exhilarating twists and turns, and more than 20 other rides amuse visitors of all ages.

Land
& Sea
Vancouver is one of the world’s top destinations for outdoor
adventure. At the foot of the mountains and with the Pacific
Ocean literally lapping at its edges, Vancouver can offer visitors
their pick of just about any type of adventure. Below are just
a few ideas.
On Water Photography
One- and multi-day fishing trips allow visitors to experience (From left): Granville Island sea

With thousands of inlets and coves, Vancouver is the ultimate
location for kayaking, whether beginner or expert. Popular destinations include False Creek
and the Indian Arm fjord, a dramatic 18-mile inlet. Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak Centre,
Ecomarine Ocean Kayak Centre and other operators offer rentals and exciting tours.
Vancouver’s waterways are a fantastic place to go whale and wildlife watching to see
migrating killer, humpback and grey whales, frolicking dolphins and sea lions. Tour boats
range from covered or uncovered high-speed zodiacs to larger-scale ships. The season
generally runs from April to October. Some operators, such as Wild Whales Vancouver, leave
from Granville Island while others leave from ports just outside Vancouver.
On Land
With the Coast Mountains right outside its door, Vancouver’s ancient, awe-inspiring rainforests,
sparkling rivers and countless trails provide a natural playground for camping, hiking, biking
and eco-touring.
For adrenaline junkies, Whistler Bungee and WildPlay at the Bungy Zone send people off
120- to 150-foot bridges spanning forests and glacial-fed rivers in a spectacular mountain
setting. And Ziptrek & TreeTrek Ecotours, Air Grouse and WildPlay allow fresh-air enthusiasts
to soar high above the forest floor on tree-to-tree zip-line courses through old-growth forests.
Less adventurous visitors will enjoy Big Bus and The Vancouver Trolley Company, which allow
you to sit back as they zip around Vancouver, narrating the sights. Or go farther to Whistler, explor
Victoria, Harrison Hot Springs and beyond with operators such as Landsea Tours, Stay and
Tour and others who are the go-to experts for exploring the mountains, valleys, waterfalls,
vineyards, gardens and richly varying landscape of the region. Vis

snowshoeing and snow-tubing. For a truly unique experi-
ence, you can also try skiing or boarding at night with the
twinkling city lights below. And don’t forget the world-class
ski resort of Whistler Blackcomb Mountain, Host Mountain

from Vancouver, you can have the winter adventure of a life-
time at these legendary slopes.
Golf
It’s a little-known fact that Vancouver is one of the world’s top
golf destinations year-round. See for yourself on a range of
courses for every skill level. For par-three short courses, try
Queen Elizabeth Park Pitch & Putt or Stanley Park Pitch
& Putt. Public courses include McCleery Golf Course and
Fraserview Golf Course and Langara Golf Course, located
in Vancouver; Northlands Golf Course, in North Vancouver;
and Redwoods Golf Course in Langley. Moderately challeng-
ing courses include University Golf Club, a championship
course open year-round, and Meadow Gardens, a 7,041-yard
championship links course just east of Vancouver. Challenging
courses include Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club, de-
signed by Michael Hurdzan; Furry Creek Golf & Country Club,
a spectacular par-72 championship layout; and Mayfair Lakes
Golf Course, a 27-hole facility with mountain vistas.

Multicultural locals with sophisticated tastes, enterprising
local chefs serving up innovative recipes, a bounty of local

Share Plates
Whether it’s Chinese dim sum, Japanese izakaya or Spanish
tapas, share plates are all the rage in Vancouver. While not
exactly a trend that’s specific to Vancouver, it’s particu-
larly pronounced here. Charcuterie, ceviche, soft fish tacos,
sashimi salads, won tons and potstickers, soft-shell crab rolls,
sushi and sashimi — the list of share plate dishes is endless.
This is one dining trend that’s as much about having fun and
sharing the food as it is about enjoying new flavours.
Sustainable Seafood
One of the biggest issues facing eco-mind-
ed diners is finding sustainable seafood.
Thanks to the Ocean Wise program de-
veloped at the Vancouver Aquarium, the
guesswork is removed from the equation.
The Aquarium’s list of restaurants committed to serving sus-
tainable, ocean-friendly seafood is available on its website,
oceanwisecanada.com, and you can look for the Ocean Wise
symbol on local menus to help you make wise choices when
ordering seafood.
Local Ingredients
Many of Vancouver’s top chefs have built alliances with local farmers and fishermen to secure
and serve the freshest local ingredients. Whether it’s produce from nearby farms or seafood
fresh from the sea, the dishes that make it to the table in Vancouver are often made with ingre-
dients that are unmistakably crisp and sharp, giving diners an experience that’s hard to match
anywhere else.
