Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Using a narrated PowerPoint presentation performs the balancing act
of inclusivity by incorporating both audio and visual. This ensure that each student in the classroom has the
same opportunity for achievement.
Lesson idea implementation:
I will begin the lesson by first drawing a picture and asking the students to identify what shapes they see In
the image drawn. There will be some students who are unknowledgeable about shapes, this is where the
narrated presentation will come in to effect. I will go through the PowerPoint presentation with the entire
class to teach those who are new to learning about shapes, and to refresh the memory of those who have
prior knowledge.
For the lesson, I will start by splitting students into 5 groups of 4 (these groups will not be based on
knowledge of shapes). Each group will be given an iPad and I will assign each group a shape and have them go
around the classroom and find 4 objects that looks like their shape, and take a picture of all 4 items. After the
groups are done we will continue until each group has had “circle, rectangle, cube, square, cylinder” Once
students are done we will add the pictures to a google document and have a class discussion about the
objects the students found.

Reflective Practice: To extend this lesson, students will create “Shape Flip Books” in which they will draw out
and label their shapes. They will then add pictures of everyday objects that contains their shape. The shape

books will then be published on the teacher blog to share with other teachers, along with parents. This lesson
is a great way to apply hands on learning and solidify their recognition of the shapes and their structures.
