QUESTION 4 [25 marks]

A 240 V rms 60-Hz source supplies two loads connected in parallel; load 1 is 30 kW, p.f =
0.832 (lagging) and load 2 is 50 kW, p.f. = 0.958 (lagging).
Determine
(a) The power factor of the parallel combination. [9 marks]
(b) The current drawn from the supply. [3 marks]
(c) The value of the capacitor that will raise the power factor to 0.98. [5 marks]
(d) The current drawn from the supply under the new power-factor conditions.
[3 marks]
(e) Compare the current before (obtained in (b)) and after the new power-factor
conditions (obtained in (d)) and based on your understanding of power-factor
correction and with the help a suitable phasor diagram explain the significant
adding a capacitor in parallel with the inductive load. [5 marks]

USEFUL FORMULA:

DC CIRCUITS

1st order RL or RC circuits:

Step response: x (t) = x ( ) + [ x (0) – x ( ) ] e- t/

Source-free response: x (t) = x (0) e- t/

2nd order, RLC circuits:

Series RLC = R / 2L o= 1/ LC

Parallel RLC = 1 / (2RC) o= 1/ LC

When ( > o) then circuit response is over damped response:x ( t ) = A1 es1 t + A2 es2 t

When ( = o) then circuit response critically damped response: x ( t ) = ( A1 t + A2 ) e- t

When ( < o) then circuit response under damped response:x ( t ) = e- t

( A1 cos wdt +
A2 sin wdt )

d = 0

2 2
S1,2 = 0

AC CIRCUITS

ZC= 1 / ( j C ) ZL = j L

S = P + jQ = Vrms Irms* = ½ VmIm * Vrms = Vm / 2

S = I 2rms Z = V2rms / Z*

Apparent power, S = | S | = Vrms Irms = P2 Q2

Real power, P = Re ( S ) = S cos ( V - i ) = I 2rms R

Reactive power, Q = Im ( S ) = S sin ( V - i ) = I 2rms X

Power factor, fp = P / S = cos ( V - i )
