BYU-Idaho Preschool Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan #23

Lab 4
Nature Day

Date: Friday June 23, 2017

Supervisor: Alice Anderson
Lead Teacher: Sarah Wade

Children and Learning/Development Goals:

1. Finn: Finn’s goal is listening and following rules which he will have the opportunity to
work on during the field trip as we inform him of the boundaries that he will need to stay
inside of as well as coming to the teacher for roll call when I blow the whistle. .
2. Savannah: Savannah’s goal is social interaction which she will have multiple
opportunities to play with her peers as the create games and scenarios to play outside in
the trees and on the rocks.
3. Levi: Levi’s goal is to learn the concept of time and following directions. He will be able
to have a better sense of time as the teacher blows the whistle every 20 minutes and he
will be able to practice his goal of listening to instructions as he stays with the boundaries
of play for the day.
4. Ihan: Ihans’ goal is to share as well as using his words to solve problems. He will work
on this goal when he wants the same toy or the same rock as another child as well as by
using his words to ask other children if he can play with them.

Preassessment and Findings:

 Aaron was sitting on a branch in the hut outside that was blocking the back entrance to
the hut and it broke a little. He wanted to break it off completely so he tried to sit on it
more and pull with his ‘big muscles.’ From observing this I thought about how Aaron
would probably have a fun time exploring outside during our nature day.
 Finn and Teddy have used the hut outside for their fort many times as they pretend to be
beasts that live in the hut. I feel like if they will enjoy using their imagination to play
outside.
 While playing outside Lilly has gathered some of the tops of some of the dead leaves and
gathered them together and carried them around with her. She has also made a bracelet
with one of these pieces.
 Aaron has climbed trees now two days in a row.
 Aaron has used the hose to make mud multiple times outside
 I have never heard any of the children say the names of the trees or plants that are found
on our playground so I feel like it would be fun to teach them the names of the trees and
plants in the area of the garden that we will be playing in.

Ideas to be Emphasized:
1. Trees we can find in nature include: black hills spruce, green spruce, blue spruce, scotch
and Australian pine trees, amur maple, and yellow birch.
2. Plants that we can find in nature include: day lilies, sage, iris, and holly hocks.
Preschool Concepts or Skills:
1. Expressing ideas
2. Nature
3. Exploration

Safety At the end of opening circle, I will set the expectations Whistle
Walk with the childr5en. Boys and girls, today we have a Clip boards with
special day where we will be outside all day for check in sheets
preschool! Before we begin we want to introduce our Pen
parent helpers. (Parents say their names and whose
parents they are) Can we all say thank you. We will take
a minute to make sure that we go to the bathroom and
put on sunscreen. Now that we all have sunscreen on we
are going to show you the boundaries for our nature day.
As we walk around the boundaries we will show you
where is okay to go and where is not okay to go. (I will
walk around the boundaries and end I the big grassy
area). We are free to explore within those boundaries
and when we do we need to not kill the living things. So
don’t take off the leaves or pedals on the flowers or
trees but if you find leaves or pedals on the ground you
can pick them up and use them. And lastly to make sure
we all stay together we are going to have a roll call
every 20 minutes. When I blow the whistle you will stop
what you are doing and come to me so we can do our
roll call. Now we will practice. I will let you play for a
few minutes and when I blow the whistle, what are you
going to do? Yep stop what you are doing and come see
me right here at this spot. (Do the practice roll call).
Snack will be right here throughout the day for when
you get hungry or want a drink. Now you are free to go
play and we will have our gathering time later today.
