HYDRAULIC CALCULATION CHECK SHEET - NFPA 13D Sprinkler System

ASPE Webinar 2-23-2011

JOB NAME: The House of Cats DATE: 2/20/2011

LOCATION: Elgin, IL

1. Cover or summary sheet provided? Yes

2. Curve or graph sheet of the water supply provided? Yes

3. Grid systems' flow sheet provided? N/A

4. Sprinkler Constant K:

a. ½" orifice ______________________,

Small orifice 3.9 ,

Other __________________________

5. Piping Constant C:

a. Underground: 140

b. Overhead: 120

6. Total number of sprinklers operating Tspk:

a. Tspk is one or two sprinklers. Tspk is 2 sprinklers operating.

7. Check the individual sprinkler spacing coverage As:

a. As is the remote sprinkler spacing coverage.

b. The sprinkler spacing coverage shall not exceed the listing per sprinkler. Greater sprinkler
spacing coverage is allowed if the sprinkler is U.L. listed for greater coverage.

c. As = 140 sq. ft. per sprinkler.

8. Remote sprinkler flow (gpm) q1

a. q1 is the flow of water from the remote sprinkler.

b. q1 is 18 gpm minimum for one calculated sprinkler, 13 gpm minimum if two sprinklers are
calculated, or the flow is based on the U.L. listing of the sprinkler being used.

c. Sprinkler manufacturer and model number Central, R-1.

d. Listed for 13 gpm minimum. Verify that the listed gpm is equal to the q1 in the calculations.

e. q1 = 13 gpm.

9. Remote sprinkler starting pressure Pt1: Q = K x P

2
⎛ q1 ⎞
a. Pt1 = ⎜ ⎟
⎝K⎠

2
⎛ 13 ⎞
b. Pt1 = ⎜ ⎟ = 11.11 – 11.40 psi minimum.
⎝ 3.9 ⎠

c. Verify that Pt1 is equal to or greater than the minimum operating pressure of the sprinkler’s
U.L listing.

10. Total quantity of water used in the calculation Qt:

a. Qt is the sum of q1 + q2 (if calculated).

b. Qt = q1 13 + q2 13.5 = 26.5 gpm.

11. Check to see if the pipe sizes Ps in the calculations match the pipe sizes on the drawing. Yes

12. Check the friction losses through the sprinkler piping psi/ft.

a. Do the friction losses (psi/ft) match the friction loss tables? Yes

13. Check the pressure loss Pf for a particular length of pipe.

14. Check the elevation loss Pe = 8 ft. x .434 = 3.5 psi loss.

15. Check the domestic water demand qd.

a. qd = 5.0 gpm.
