Activity 1A
Answers will vary according to the position and authority of the learner.
Activity 1B
Activity Explain the duty of care and how it affects different aspects of
your work.
All answers will vary and will depend on the role of the learner.
Learners should reflect on how compliance with this affects their work
and their decisions.
Adverse event
For each, explain the issue, how you would report it and to
whom.
The fall was an accident and was not caused by negligence. The
accident log is filled in and the client is assessed for injury. No injury is
apparent; the staff on the next shift are informed and told to keep an
eye on the client, in case their condition worsens.
Activity 1D
Medical records?
Storage of records?
Verbal communication?
Written communication?
All answers will vary from organisation to organisation and will depend
upon the role and authority of the learner.
How can you carry out this job to help the rest of your
colleagues?
For example:
I need to do my job to ensure that the residents’ schedules are met and
that they have a healthy start to the day. If I don’t feed them on time,
then they can miss out on days out, activities and seeing their visitors.
I try my best to give a quick service, so that the residents are not
delayed and hold the morning staff up. I keep the food under heat
lamps and look after it until the residents arrive, so that the residents’
food does not get cold or spoilt.

Activity 2B
Written communication
Examples are given in section 2.2 of the Learner Guide. Any answers
that sufficiently protect the information being communicated are
acceptable.
Workplace acronyms
Workplace abbreviations
Workplace slang
Workplace sociolect.
For each example, give the term used and explain what it
means or refers to.
Sociolect: “Mr Williams is in the wet room on second” where ‘wet room’
means ‘shower.’
Activity 2D
Cultural difference: an Asian client should not have his personal space
invaded.
For example: gaining the client’s consent to examine, treat or work with
them can make them feel like they are receiving a more personalised
and caring service that takes account of their feelings and wishes, as
opposed to them just being examined like a piece of meat and not
communicated with.
Activity 2F
All answers will vary according to learners and their specific workplaces.
For example:
Activity 3B
For example:
For each, give the job description/title and explain why they
are needed and what role they provide.
All answers will vary. Learners should identify the merits and purpose of
each person or role.
Above:
Managers
Supervisors
Senior staff
Inspectors
Standards, etc.
Laundry
Food server
Housekeeping
Student.
For example:
There has been a scandal about understaffed care homes, which has
resulted in reports of neglect.
Explain to families of new and existing clients how your rota system
works and assure them that there are always X amount of staff in at
any one time and how there are Y amount of clients for every care
provider.
Activity Select three items from this list in section 4.1 of the unit and
explain why they are important for the care industry.
Ethical behaviour
Preventative strategies
For example:
Activity 4B
Activity Identify three good values and three bad values that could
affect work performance and explain why each is good/bad.
For example:
Activity 5A
What does this tell existing and potential clients about the
business?
All answers will vary and will depend upon the particular sector and
type of care provided. Learners may refer to the internet or their own
knowledge.
For example:
This would save time and effort and stop sheets becoming
crumpled and pulled out in the night.
What is it?
More specialised.
Offers an additional perk that others don’t, sets this care home
above the rest. Poor food is often a problem in care homes, so
this can be a big advertising point.
Activity 5E
This means staff have to be ready 30 minutes earlier, but this benefits
the residents much more.
For example:
A resident is missing.
Activity 5G
All answers will vary and will depend upon the qualifications, licenses
and level of authority and seniority of each learner.
All answers will vary and may include training sessions, fact sheets,
textbooks, the internet, colleagues, managers, trainers, etc.
Activity 6B
Activity 6C
Activity How can you ensure that you have all training up to date?
For example, through the use of training records and schedules. Follow
up with training.
Activity 7A
Activity 7C
From whom?
How?
Safety skills
Literacy skills
Development skills
Initiative skills
Teamwork skills
Ethical frameworks
Current issues
Duty of care
All answers will vary depending on the learner and the organisation they
work for but the learner should be able to answer each question
competently.
Ethics
Duty of care
Mandatory notification
For the item you choose, create a poster that could be displayed
in the workplace informing workers of the relevant information
they should be aware of.
All answers will vary and should summarise the information provided for
the chosen topic.
Activity This is a major activity – you should let the learners know
whether they will complete it during class or in their own time.
1. Work ethically
Good practice, avoid issues, do the best for the client and the
company, make the best decision, adherence to moral guidelines,
etc.
So they can adhere to them and know their rights. All employees
should contribute to the maintenance of a happy and healthy
working environment.
Not ethical, unfair, abuse of power, not in the interests of the clients
or the company, etc.
To get around issues and difficulties, to make the client relaxed and
comfortable, to be accommodating, duty of care.
Can give them information on services that can use that will
enhance their day to day lives and help them.
16. Why should you respect workers from all sectors and
levels?
Helps ensure basic level of care, can pick out better companies,
incentive to better, etc.
Faster, easier, cheaper, better, better for the staff, etc. Should
always improve to avoid stagnation and the onset of issues and
problems.
Can understand what you’re good and bad at and work accordingly.
Know what to volunteer yourself for.
