3.0 MINIMUM PERMISSIBLE CROSS-SECTIONS

3.1 For 11kV system

The longest duration of short-circuit fault for incoming and tie feeder cables is estimated to 1 second for
50kA and for outgoing feeder cables such as motors and transformers, 0.2 seconds which shall be verified
by short circuit calculation and protection relay setting study.

The mathematical formula is as follows according to IEC 364-5-54.

𝐼𝑋 𝑡
A = (Equation 3.1)
𝑘

Where,

t = duration in seconds

A = cross-sectional area in square millimeters

I = effective short-circuit in A expressed as r.m.s. value

k = factor

𝑄𝑐 (𝐵+20) 𝜃𝑟 − 𝜃𝑖
𝑘= ln( 1 + ) (Equation 3.2)
𝑄20 𝐵+ 𝜃𝑖

2.5 𝑥 10 −3 (228+20) 250−90

𝑘= ln (1 + ) = 94.55
28.264 𝑥 10 −6 228+90

Qc = volumetric heat capacity of conductor material [J/oC mm3]

B = reciprocal of temperature co-efficient of resistivity at 0oC for the conductor [oC]

Q20 = electrical resistivity of conductor at 20oC *Ω mm]

Θi = initial temperature of conductor [oC]

Θc = initial temperature of conductor [oC]

Considering equation 3.1, the minimum cross-sections shall be:

- For incoming and tie feeder cables

Amin = 531.91 mm2 for 50kA, 1 sec

- For outgoing feeder cables

Amin = 237.87 mm2 for 50kA, 0.2 sec

Page 4 of 26
ELEC_POWER & CONTROL CABLE DESIGN_DESIGN CRITERIA FOR CABLE
DP16004-YR07-90ZEN-140002

Therefore minimum cross-sections shall be 630 mm2 for incoming and tie feeder cables and 240 mm2 for
outgoing feeder cables of 11kV switchgears.

3.2 For 3.3kV system

The longest duration of short-circuit fault for incoming and tie feeder cables is estimated to 1 second for
40kA and for outgoing feeder cables such as motors and transformers, 0.2 seconds which shall be verified
by short circuit calculation and protection relay setting study.

Considering equation 3.1, the minimum cross-sections shall be:

- For incoming and tie feeder cables

Amin = 425.53 mm2 for 40kA, 1 sec

- For outgoing feeder cables

Amin = 190.30 mm2 for 40kA, 0.2 sec

Therefore minimum cross-sections shall be 630 mm2 for incoming and tie feeder cables and 240 mm2 for
outgoing feeder cables of 3.3kV switchgears.

3.3 For 415V system

The longest duration of short-circuit fault for incoming and tie feeder cables is estimated to 1 second for
50kA and for outgoing feeder cables such as motors and transformers, 0.25 seconds which shall be
verified by short circuit calculation and protection relay setting study.

Considering equation 3.1, the minimum cross-sections shall be:

- For incoming and tie feeder cables

Amin = 531.91 mm2 for 40kA, 1 sec

- For outgoing feeder cables

Amin = 265.95 mm2 for 40kA, 0.25 sec

Therefore minimum cross-sections shall be 630 mm2 for incoming and tie feeder cables and 300 mm2 for
outgoing feeder cables of 415V switchgears.

3.4 For 220V system

The cable size will be selected based on the current carrying capacity of cable.

For A.C. System 1 SCOPE
(Voltage drop - Volts/Km/Amps) The conductor size in the cables for any installation is also governed by its ability to carry short circuit current of
