Time Motivation and Introduction:
9am - Students will complete this activity in groups outside the classroom with
Miss Langer.
- To begin, each student will receive a piece of coloured card, a printed poem Coloured card, printed poems,
and a photo of themselves. Later on in the lesson they will receive individual photos
materials for the clay pendant.
- Engage student’s attention by asking, “What is your favourite thing about
your mum?” and invite answers from each student. Follow up by telling
them about the importance of mums and that we have Mother’s Day to
show our gratitude for all they do for us.
2. Have students fold their coloured piece of card and glue their picture Glue
on the front. Above their picture they will glue on the poem, giving the
illusion that students are holding the poem like a banner.
3. Inside the card students will write their own personal message to their Coloured pencils, Textas, crayons
Mum. If students are stuck for ideas, suggest prompts such as:
- What their mum does for them
- What they love about their mum
- Their favourite activity to do with their mum
9:20am 4. Once they have finished their card, students will begin the home-made
pendant to be put inside the card.
5. Model the activity first by demonstrating the way to make the pendant. Air-dry clay, skewer
STEP BY STEP:
Begin by rolling a small ball of clay and use a round pen to roll it into a
flat circle. Using your fingers, shape the edges nice and smoothly.
Lightly press your thumb into the clay so that it leaves a print. Next,
use a wooden skewer to make a hole in the top of the pendant ready
to be threaded through a necklace. Make sure you demonstrate to the
students that twisting the skewer lightly will produce a smooth hole
9:25am perfect for threading. Drying tray
6. Assist the students as they follow these steps slowly to create their
own individual pendant. After each step is completed, have students
place their pendants on a drying tray so that the clay can harden. Cotton thread
7. In the next lesson, students will thread their cotton/string through the
hole and tie it into a necklace (put the loop through the hole from the
9:40am front to the back then pull the two loose ends through the loop and
knot the loose ends). The pendant will then be placed inside the card
created earlier, ready to gift for Mother’s Day.
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
