of B.tech programme, 2nd semester (spring)- 2018,
School of Engineering, Tezpur University.
1. A uniform rod AB is resting on two inclined smooth plane shown in figure.
Determine the angle θ for equilibrium by using rigid body mechanics and virtual
work principle.

Ans.
2. Determine the resultant force (magnitude and direction) acting on the ring
shown in the figure below.
Ans.
3. A uniform bar AB of weight 20 KN hinge at A is kept horizontal by supporting
and setting a 50KN weight with the help of a string tied at B and passing over a
smooth peg D as shown in figure below. Determine the tension in the string and
reaction at the supports A and D.
Ans.
4. Determine the resultant force that is equivalent to the 2 forces acting on the
bracket. Also determine the point of application of the resultant force acting on the
vertical line AB shown in Fig. 4.
Ans.
5. Determine the couple M required to spin the cylinder of mass m in its position
against the vertical wall shown in Fig.4. The coefficient of friction for each pair of
contacting surfaces is μ.
Ans.
6. A telephone cable AB exerts a 2500 N force on the telegraph pole in the
direction of the tangent to the cable at A. Determine the required tension T in the
wire AC if the resultant of the two forces at A is to act vertically down shown in
Fig. 6. Find the magnitude of the resultant.
Ans.

7. What should be the value of the angle θ so that motion of the 60kg block
impends down the plane? The coefficient of friction μ for all surfaces is 0.25.
Ans.
8. The two 200 mm diameter pipes each have a mass of 200 kg. Determine the
forces due to contact with the walls at A, B & C. All contacts are frictionless.
Ans.
9. Determine the coordinates of the centroid of the lamina as shown in Fig 9. The
shaded area is the opening in the lamina.
Ans.
10. Determine the forces in members BD and CD of the truss in Fig. 10. All
triangles are equilateral.
Ans.
11. The block/pulley system shown below is in equilibrium.
a. Draw a free-body diagram of each block.
b. Determine the angles q and f.
The following conditions apply:
a. Light inextensible strings connect the masses
b. The pulleys are frictionless
c. The surfaces are frictionless
d. The system rests in equilibrium
