1. Introduction

This document covers the steps required to ensure a MHSB system will switch over to the standby radio if
the active radio has a major alarm.

For further detail on the MHSB system please refer to the Aprisa XE user manual, section 11 Protected
Terminals.

2. Methods of switching

There are two different methods for switching over to the standby radio. There will be a short
traffic/management outage when switching over to the standby radio, typically less than 10 seconds.

The MHSB switch has a hysteresis of 30 seconds to prevent switching on short alarm transients.
Switching periods less than 30 seconds shouldn’t be attempted.

2.1. Mode Switch

Located on the tributary switch. This is a three-position locking toggle switch to set the MHSB switch into
automatic mode or Radio A / radio B test mode.

2.2. Alarm Generation

A major modem synchronization alarm can be generated by removing the Rx cable between the RF
Switch and active radio. This will cause the Tributary to switch over to the standby radio.

4. Test Setup

4.1. BER Test

A BER Test should be setup as shown below.

4.2. Ping Test

Open four CMD-windows for each radio on your PC.

Command “ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx –t” (IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)

All four radios can be pinged at the same time. The remote radios response time will be greater than the
local radios due to the end-to-end delay. The end-to-end delay will vary depending on channel size,
modulation and interleaver mode.

5. Procedure

Follow through step by step.

1. Setup so that both T1 ‘A’ and T2 ‘A’ side terminals are active.
2. Run BER/PING test and confirm that the system is performing error free between T1A – T2A.
3. Manually switch over remote terminal.
4. Check the Remote B terminal MHSB Status is active.
5. Run BER/PING test and confirm that the system is performing error free between T1A – T2B.
6. Manually switch over Local Terminal.
7. Check the Local ‘B’ terminal MHSB Status is active.
8. Run BER/PING test and confirm that the system is performing error free between T1B – T2B.
9. Manually switch over remote terminal.
10. Check the Remote A terminal MHSB Status is active.
11. Run BER/PING test and confirm that the system is performing error free between T1B – T2A.
12. Manually switch over Local Terminal.
13. Check the Local A terminal MHSB Status is active.
14. Run BER/PING test and confirm that the system is performing error free between T1A – T2A.

5.1. MHSB Combination Configurations of operation

The MHSB status can be found on the on the MHSB control page in SuperVisor.

Each radio contains a X_connext database file. (Active Radios and Inactive Radios)

The radios can operate in a combination of configurations. See below traffic description.
