I came to Graz with an intent to carry out a research regarding my master thesis. With
my mentor from my home university – Faculty of Philosophy Novi Sad, Serbia – I decided that
Graz was one of the most adequate research centers for my thesis, since I am writing about
Franz Kafka whose writing language was German. Working title of my master thesis is
„Contemporary Theory on Franz Kafka: G. Deleuze, G. Agamben and J. Butler“.
I am very content with what Karl-Franzens University of Graz has provided me with
research-wise. On numerous occassions I payed a visit to the library of German Studies where I
found dozens of useful monographs and articles on Kafka. Moreover, my research has been
supported by university assistant and Franz-Nabl-Institut employee Mr Stefan Maurer, whose
lecture „Literaturwissenschaftliche Interpretation“ I participated in during the whole semester. I
also attended the lectures „Literarische Traditionen 3“ held by Professor Christian Neuhuber and
Professor Günter Höfler at the Departement of German Studies. I opted for these two courses
since both (partly) discuss the work of Franz Kafka. At these lectures not only did I discover
fresh research angles to Kafka, but I learned a lot about literature and authors from the
German-speaking countries as well, which is an opportunity that I did not have at my home
university.
Naturally, even though my master thesis research remained in focus throughout the
semester, I decided to participate in a couple of lectures held at the guest institute –
Departement of Slavic Studies. There I opted for the course „Intimität in postjugoslavischen
Literaturen“ held by university assistant Ms Dijana Simić, through which I became acquainted
with the contemporary “ex-yu” prose works and held a highly successful presentation on
Slavenka Drakulić. One of the main reasons I chose this course is because the opportunity to
hear about these prose authors and literary works is relatively small at our home university.
Same applies to the remarkable course held by professor and writer Dževad Karahasan “Das
Absurde im slawischen Drama” which probably left the stongest impression. The level of passion
with which professor Karahasan speaks and the simplicity yet effectiveness with which his
lectures are impregnated is nothing more than outstanding. At this course I was also engaged
with a presentation on Jovan Sterija Popović.
To conclude, I would name my stay and research here in Graz as highly successful since
I have achieved the academic results I had been hoping for.
