1. You have read this advertisement placed by a television company and you have
decided to reply.
We are planning a series of documentaries about people’s attitude to keeping fit in different
countries around the world. How important is keeping fit for people in your country and how
have sports facilities improved in your country in recent years? WRITE AND TELL US
ABOUT IT.
Look at your notes. Write to the TV Company telling them about people’s attitude to fitness in
your country. Write a letter of between 120-180 words in an appropriate style. Do not write
any addresses.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing in response to your advertisement asking for information about people’s attitude
to fitness and how sports facilities have improved in my country over recent years.
Over the last 10 years, people in Poland have become more aware of how important fitness is
for a healthy life. More and more gyms are being opened and people are spending more time
on sports. Smoking has become less popular, especially among young people and they are
careful about what they eat too.
As far as I am concerned young people are more involved in sport than old people. Perhaps it
is because more and better facilities are available now than 10 or 20 years ago. Aerobics and
swimming are the lost popular activities in a sports center and cycling has become a popular
outdoor activity, especially at weekends.
Although people are more interested in keeping fit I still believe there could be a lot more
improvements. For example, more cycle paths in the cities.
Yours faithfully,

Part 1:
Read the title and whole text all the way through to grasp the general idea of the text.
Now read the whole text carefully this time. Stop at each gap and identify what type of
word is missing. The word you choose must fit grammatically and make sense within
the whole text.
Finally, read through the completed text to make sure it makes sense.
If you are not sure about an answer, never leave the gap blank. It is always better to
guess than leave it blank. Using the process of elimination should help you narrow
your answers down.
Part 2:
Read the title and whole text all the way through to grasp the general idea of the text.
Now read the whole text carefully this time. Stop at each gap and identify what type of
word is missing. The word you choose must fit grammatically and make sense within
the whole text.
Finally, read through the completed text to make sure it makes sense.
If you are not sure about an answer, never leave the gap blank. It is always better to
guess than leave it blank.
Part 3:
Read the original sentence carefully focusing on the tense and meaning.
Now read the gapped sentence and decide what part of the first sentence is being
focused on.
Choose the correct grammatical structure according to the words used before and after
the gap.
Fill in the gap using between 2 and 5 words (including the given word). Remember
that contracted forms (e.g. I’m) are counted as two words (e.g. I am).
Part 4:
Read through the whole text quickly to understand the general meaning of the text.
Now read through more carefully and underline any words you feel are unnecessary.
Go back and read through the text without the extra word and see if it makes sense.
Take care not to focus on the text line by line, but sentence by sentence.
Part 5:
Read the whole text all the way through to get the general meaning of the text.
Now read each line carefully and decide what part of speech is missing in each gap.
Then decide if the word should be in the positive, negative form or singular or plural.
Finally read through the completed version of the text to make sure it makes sense.
