FOREWORD
I am pleased to present this issue of the Directory of Structural
Engineers 2016 after expanding and updating the professional and
personal information of our members indicated in the previous edition
2015. As traditionally published in previous years this publication
provides the latest detailed information of our members who will be
available to provide consultancy services and advice to the general
public, public bodies and potential clients for the structural engineering
matters.
In addition, in this issue, Section A of the Directory consists of the names and other personal
details of all members who are in the Registry maintained by the Society from the level of
Corporate Member and above, namely Member, Fellow and Honorary Fellow, to cater to the
requirements of the Construction Industry Development Act. Current practice of granting above
classes of membership are based on verification of academic qualifications and professional
experience particular to Structural Engineering evaluated by an examination panel consisting of
senior members of the Society.

Section B of the Directory provides personal data, academic qualifications and professional
experience along with the primary and secondary areas of expertise of those members who
have wished to have their names and details included for consultancy services in Structural

Engineering required by the general public, public bodies and potential clients. The details of
members have been compiled in this directory based on the information provided by the

members themselves and whetted by the Examination Panel to the best of their ability.
I believe that this document will provide valuable information to identify those who are
recognized by their peers as properly qualified and competent Structural Engineers – with

whatever background is required by employers, developers, architects, bankers, insurers,
contractors, lawyers, arbitrators, the courts, government institutions or anyone else who is

interested in seeking to engage our members in structural engineering works.

The Society is greatly indebted to the distinguished Panels of Examiners for evaluating the
academic qualifications and professional experience for admitting applicants or upgrading the
members in to different classes as well as for evaluating the experience of those members who
wished to have their names and comprehensive details included in this edition. Special thanks

are due to Eng. S.A. Karunaratne for whetting the recent applications for the Directory and Eng.
G.G.M. Wijethilake and Eng. Nandana Abeysuriya for carrying out the laborious task of updating
and preparing the entirety of the text for the printing of this edition.

Eligibility Criteria – Corporate Members
A. Eligibility (Extract from by – Laws)
Every candidate for admission or transfer to the class member shall satisfy that he is :
1. Sri Lankan resident who is at least 25 years of age.
AND
2. A person holding a recognized degree in civil / structural engineering from a university.

and holding corporate membership of a recognized institution in civil / structural
engineering and practicing the profession of structural engineering for a minimum period
of four years after obtaining the degree.

Such a person shall be eligible to apply for election as a member of the Society and if
suitable after an assessment by a professional review panel appointed by the executive
o
committee, shall be elected as a member of the society.

B. Professional Review Interview
An interview by panel will be conduct to assess the candidate’s suitability for admission
as a member of the society. The interview will be base on the work experience report

submitted by the candidate and the panel will assess the degree of professional

involvement and his personal contribution in the field of structural engineering.
C. Proposer and Seconder

The proposer and seconder should be a corporate member of the society.

The proposer and seconder should satisfy themselves to the suitability of the candidate
to the grade of membership applied for and that the form is correct filed and legibly
written, and is submitted together with all original certificates for inspection.

Appendix 02
Eligibility Criteria – Fellows

1. Candidate shall be more than 40 years of age.
2. Shall be holding Corporate Member status of the Society and holding Corporate
membership of a recognized Institution in Civil / Structural Engineering and practicing the
profession of Structural Engineering for a period of not less than 10 years after obtaining
Member status.
3. Shall possess a minimum of 10 years experience which is considered superior to that

required for Corporate Membership.
4. The Candidate shall;
a) Be able to show that, during a minimum of 10 years of experience which is

considered superior to that required for Corporate Membership, he/she was
responsible for structural designs and supervision of execution of structural

engineering works of large Buildings and / or Civil Engineering Projects.
b)

Be able to show that he/she has been in charge of a structural engineering
practice / section having several chartered / graduate engineers worked under his
charge.

c) Have made some outstanding contributions to the field of structural engineering in
designs, management, development and research.

5. The Candidate shall submit a Career Report or Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) containing
his involvements in Engineering particular in Structural Engineering.
The Career Report / CV shall have minimum 2000 words including the following areas,
a) Education Qualifications
b) Professional Qualifications

c) Post-graduate Work experience

d) Conferences, Seminars, Workshops and Question Time programs
attended.
e) Details of Publications and Presentations on subjects connected with
Engineering particularly on Structural Engineering.
f) Professional activities and contributions to the Engineering profession.
g) Post graduate research or supervising of research works / studies carried
out by graduate engineers.
h) Any other information which may be useful to evaluate as described under
item 6.
6. The Candidate will be assessed on the following competences through details given in the
Application, Career Report / CV.
a) Experience as a Structural Engineer after fulfilling requirements for election as a

Corporate Member in Structural Engineering. (Experience in Design Office
Management and/or Senior Management Position at reputed Engineering

Organization or Senior Academic Posts at recognized University connected with
Structural Engineering will be considered.) (40% marks)
b) Continuing Professional Development (Post-graduate Diploma and Degrees in

Structural Engineering, active participation of Conferences and Seminars
connected with Structural Engineering particularly by publishing technical papers
or making presentations, holding key positions in professional organizations /
institutions connected with Engineering etc.) (20% marks)
c) Details of Publications and Presentations on subjects connected with

Engineering particularly on Structural Engineering. (15% marks)

Eligibility Criteria – Honorary Fellows
A person of eminence who, in the opinion of the executive committee, has made an outstanding
contribution in the field of Structural Engineering or in a closely allied field may be elected an

Honorary Fellow of the Society by a two-thirds majority of the total number of members of the
Executive Committee.
