Cómo calcular el pH de soluciones
La escala de pH
• es una escala logarítmica que corresponde a la [H3O+] de
soluciones acuosas.
• es el logaritmo negativo (base 10) de [H3O+]
pH = −log[H3O+]
Para calcular el pH, las potencias negativas de 10 en las
concentraciones molares se convierten en números positivos.
Si [H3O+] es 1.0 × 10−2 M,
pH = −log[1.0 × 10−2 ] = −(−2.00) = 2.00

Todos los equilibrios iónicos se producen en agua;
por eso, es importante la constante del agua:
Kw = [H3O+] [OH–]
Por lo tanto, si se aplica logaritmos negativos a la constante del agua
tenemos:
log Kw = log [H3O+] + log [OH–]
–log Kw = -log [H3O+] + (- log [OH–])
–log (10-14) = –log [H3O+] +( – log [OH–])
Se reemplaza –log = p
14 = pH + pOH
