About
ALONZO KING

Albany, Georgia native, Alonzo King of Alonzo King LINES
Ballet, founded his internationally acclaimed contemporary
ballet company, in 1982 in San Francisco, California.  He is the
son of Valencia King and civil rights activist, Slater King, and
the nephew of the late, Honorable C.B. King.  His family’s
contributions to the advancement of political and social equality
for African Americans in Albany, Georgia are well documented.

Alonzo King, in keeping with family tradition, has also enjoyed
tremendous success.  He is the recipient of numerous awards,
and his repertory is performed internationally by LINES, “the
Swedish Royal Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Ballet Bejart, Les Ballets
de Monte­Carlo, Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey (American Dance
Theatre), Hong Kong Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre,
and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago”  In addition to
choreographing for national and international dance
companies, King has created work for opera, television, and
film.  Moreover, this native son has quietly, yet extensively,
pushed the boundaries of ballet—both artistically and in terms
of ethnic diversity.
