GUIDE TO HTHCV

INT. CLASSROOM
Scene begins with four Summer Bridge leaders, ANNA, SARAH, JAVI,
and ANTHONY standing in front of a classroom, addressing a group
of incoming freshmen. SARAH facing backwards. JEFF, NIKKI and
NICK sit on the ground in front of them.

ANNA
(Waves to students) Hello everyone and
welcome to Summer Bridge! My name is
Anna. There are a lot of Annas here, so
remember, I’m the one with two n’s and
brown hair, not blonde hair or a long
last name. Anyway, who’s excited?!

Silence from STUDENTS.

ANNA snaps.

ANNA
Awesome! I love the enthusiasm!(Gestures
to ANTHONY and JAVI) By the way this is
Anthony and Javi.

JAVI
It’s Javi-

ANNA
(Gestures to SARAH) And this is Sarah!

SARAH
(Turns around) Hellooo people…

ANNA
(Interrupts) Friends!

SARAH
Hello friends, I am Sarah. Congrats on
getting pulled in the lottery.
SARAH turns around.

ANNA snaps.
 ANTHONY
Hey friends! My name is Anthony! Today
we are going to help prepare YOU for
your freshman year at HTH-

ANNA
YES!!!! (Aggressive/Excited tone) We’ll
pass out some notecatchers so you’ll be
able to take notes and reflect at the
end!

ALL
We love reflecting!

ANNA hands out note catchers.

ANNA
So first, leaders, let’s go around and
explain how we got into HTHCV. I’ll
start. I tried and tried and tried and
tried and tried to get in every year and
finally got in in freshman year! It was
a big change for me, but I love it here.
I was once one of you!!

JAVI
I’ve been going here since 5th grade.
5th grade. Ha...yeah.

SARAH
(Sarah turns around) I've been going
here for quite awhile. My first time
here EVERYONE kept snapping at me,
calling me their friend and my teachers
asked me such personal questions.
ANTHONY
 I’ve been going here since 6th grade. I
felt a little left out, since everyone
else already knew each other, but, you
know…

ANNA
But Anthony is a junior now! He’s on the
track team, ASB, soccer, and he
volunteers at the animal shelter.

ANTHONY
Yeah...thanks Anna. High Tech offers a
lot of sports and extracurricular
activities. Which leads us into our
first icebreaker game. I’ll throw a ball
around and when you catch it, ask a
question!

ANNA takes a ball out and throws it to JEFF.

ANNA
You! Yes, you! What’s your name?

JEFF stands up.

JEFF
Um, hi. My name is Jeff. So, I really
like football. Do you guys have football
here?

JAVI
Yes, Jeff, we do and it’s the most
competitive flag football team high
school has ever known. We’re so good we
only play ourselves!

ANNA
And we have a great RC team! And a math
team! And drone club!
 SARAH
(Turns around Sarcastically) We have
many trophies. They're all old-

All leaders glance at SARAH.

SARAH turns around.

JEFF stands up.

JEFF
Alrighty, I guess I could do that.

ANTHONY
Thanks for your interest!

All of the leaders snap, except for ANTHONY, who claps.

The leaders go silent and stare at ANTHONY. SARAH and
JAVI gasp.

ANNA
Don’t clap. Never clap. We snap here.

ANTHONY claps once while looking into Anna’s eyes.

ANNA
Okay, now pass the ball! (Looks at
NIKKI) Yay! What’s your name and what’s
your question?

NIKKI
Hi, I’m Nikki. How’s the lunch here at
High Tech?

SARAH turns around.

SARAH
 It’s bland. Not exciting- the fruit is
getting darker like my-

ANNA elbows SARAH and gives her a menacing glare.

ANNA
Sarah! Be Positive!

SARAH
(Gestures to speak)

JAVI
(Cuts off SARAH) A few years ago, we had
trash food like Pick-Up-Stix and
Dominoes. But who needs that? Now we
have organic bean salad and sunbutter
sandwiches.

The STUDENTS look disgusted.

ALL LEADERS
Ooooh. Organic!

SARAH turns around.

ANTHONY
Anyway, let’s play another game: the
Acronym Game.

“Acronym Game” slide shows on screen.

ANNA
I LOVE THE ACRONYM GAME!

ANTHONY
Um, okay. The Acronym Game is simple. We
will give you an acronym that we use at
HTHCV and then you tell us what it
stands for.

ANNA
 YES!

ANTHONY
Um, alright, let’s start.

“POL” shows on the screen.

ANTHONY
Can anyone tell me what POL means?

The STUDENTS are silent.

ANNA
Presentation of Learning!!!

ANTHONY
Anna, let them answer.

ANNA
Okay, okay. Got it.

“SLC” shows on the screen.

SARAH turns around.

SARAH
Alright, what does SLC mean?

ANNA
(Whispers) Student..

SARAH
Anybody?

ANNA
(Louder whisper) Student Led..

SARAH
Please, anyone?
 ANNA
Conferences.. Conferences! Student Led
Conferences!!!

SARAH, ANTHONY & JAVI

Anna!

ANNA
Sorry, I just LOVE this game!

SARAH turns around.

ANTHONY
I think we should start wrapping things
up.

ANNA
Wow, what a buzzkill, Anthony!

ANTHONY
But before we do, does anyone have any
final questions?

NICK raises hand.

ANNA
Yes you, what’s your name?

NICK
My name is Nick.

ANNA
Ooo Nick, what is your question?

NICK
What advice do you have for doing well
on your POL’s?

ANNA
 Great! Excellent! To answer your
question, Every POL you have, you have
to set yourself a goal. So always make
sure to say you want to stop
procrastinating! It will really exceed
the teachers’ expectations!
(Medium pause) any other questions?

Silence from STUDENTS.

JAVI
Well, day 1 is almost over, but before
we go it’s time for the best part.

ANNA
Awh boo.

ANTHONY
Everyone grab a piece of paper...what
time is it?

Silence from STUDENTS.

Well, the answer was reflection time!

It’s time to..

ALL
...write a reflection!

ANTHONY
Make sure to write about what you
learned today, how YOU grew as a person
from this experience and how YOU are
feeling.
The STUDENTS start writing. JEFF stands up.

JEFF
Hi, my name is Jeff. How often do we
write reflections at High Tech?

SARAH quickly turns around.

SARAH
Too much.

ANNA
(Sad tone) Sadly, not enough. I wish
we did it everyday....

SARAH
We do-

ANNA
One can wish.

SARAH
Okay people-

ANNA
-Friends!

SARAH
Friends...Would anyone like to share
out?

Silence from STUDENTS.

ANNA
(Whispers to SARAH) Is it time now?

SARAH
(Whispers) Just wait-

ANNA
Now?
 SARAH
Anna, wait.

ANNA
Now?!

SARAH
Ugh, sure-

ANNA
(Aggressively excited) POPSICLE STICKS!!

ANNA picks up Popsicle sticks and dances with excitement.

She leans towards SARAH.

ANNA
Would you like to do the honors?

SARAH takes a popsicle stick out. ANNA takes the stick from
her.

ANNA
Perfect! Lovely! Jeff! Jeff, it’s you!

Shows stick to JEFF.

JEFF stands up.

JEFF
Hi, my name is Jeff. Today was actually
pretty cool.

SARAH turns around.

ANNA
Yay!

JAVI
 Anna! (aggressively) Can you please
share the air?!

ANNA
Okay okay.

JEFF
And-

ANNA
Okay.

JEFF stands up.

JEFF
You guys are really weird - like really
weird - but I'm really excited to go to
High Tech.

SARAH turns around.

SARAH
Don’t get too excited-

ANNA
Well, I’m excited - we’re all excited -
that you’re excited.

SARAH
Wow, look at the time.

ANTHONY
That concludes day one, friends!

JAVI
We hope you had fun!

ANNA
 See you all tomorrow for an intense
power tool workshop and a feelings
circle!

SARAH
Finally, ugh, today was slower than the
WiFi.

ANNA
Sarah!

ALL
See you tomorrow!
