PREFACE

In April 2008 the 57-75 Movement organized a workbooks development write-shop in order to come up
with an immediate and effective response to the problem of lacking textbooks and instructional materials in public
schools. For two weeks, master teachers from each of the 57-75 pilot sites compiled a series of workbooks on
Science, English, and Mathematics designed for their elementary and high school students.
The write-shop aimed to: (1) identify least mastered skills in a subject area; (2) produce lesson guides that
will help increase the ability of classroom instructors in developing the mastery level of students particularly in
problematic subject areas; and (3) help teachers be creative in developing their own instructional materials based
on resources available to them in their respective schools.
Both the faculty and students of the public school system are expected to gain from this project. Teachers
will not only be aided by the problem-solving and explanations given in the workbooks but will also be helped in
terms of gearing their students towards a unified understanding of the subject matter. This workbook will also
serve as an alternative medium of instruction in the absence of textbooks and other necessary teaching materials
that the le ss fortunate may not be able to afford.
The workbooks development write-shop is also 57-75’s contribution to enhancing the reading
proficiencies in its pilot sites.
57-75, a private sector-led movement created to help address the many problems of Philippine education,
was inspired by one of the many disturbing indicators of the state of Philippine education – the results of the
National Achievement Test, in which grade school pupils scored close to 57.
The reversal of numbers in the campaign name – from 57 to 75 – symbolizes what the movement is trying
to do: turn things around, about radically rethinking the way we look at our education system and the way we
support it. We believe that this kind of rethinking will help turn around the dismal trends in Philippine education,
and eventually change statistics from 57 to 75.
57-75 advocates Focusing on helping students stay in school, enhancing reading proficiencies, and
improving achievement rates in math, science, and English; student and school Performance; and Community
Empowerment and Engagement.
57-75 wishes to acknowledge the Ateneo Center for Educational Development for supervising the
workshop. Much gratitude is also given to the League of Corporate Foundations’ Committee on Education which
funded the workshop through a grant provided by TeaM Energy Foundation, as well as to Jollibee Foundation for
additional logistical support.
57-75 would also like to especially acknowledge the master teachers from the pilot sites – without their
commitment, this workbook would not have been possible. We also extend our appreciation to the reviewers,
editors and encoders of ACED who accommodated this project into their existing workload.
57-75 is also very grateful to the initial pool of corporate donors who have pledged to help in the
reproduction of this workbook: TeaM Energy Foundation, Petron Foundation, Pilmico Corporation, BPI
Foundation, Metrobank Foundation and Insular Life Foundation. Thank you for helping to reverse the education
crisis!

Let Us Plant Trees

Trees are our friends. They give us shade. They protect us from the rain and the sun.
Many trees give us fruits to eat. Some of them are mango, santol, and durian. Others are caimito,
mabolo, duhat, and chico. These fruits taste good. They make us healthy and strong, too. Some trees
have pretty flowers. They come in many colors-red, white, yellow, and violet.
Trees give us wood. Wood can be made into chairs, tables, desks, and cabinets. Wood is all
around us. We find it at home, in school, in the playground, and in the church. Let us plant trees.
Wood from trees gives us many things.

The Monkey and the Turtle

One day, a hungry monkey was walking near the river. He was looking for food. He met a turtle
that had just come from the river. “Good morning Mr. Monkey. Where have you been?” asked the turtle.
“I’ve been walking around, looking for food,” answered the monkey.

“Come, let’s go together. It’s better if the two of us will look for food.” The monkey and the
turtle had not gone far when they found a banana plant. The banana plant was uprooted. It had a bunch of
ripe bananas.

“Let’s divide the fruits,” said the turtle. “No! No!” said the monkey. “We’ll cut the plant into two
parts. The part with the fruits and leaves will be mine.” The turtle did not say anything. She asked the
monkey to help her carry the other half of the plant and he did. The monkey began to plant the other half
of the plant with leaves and fruits. “I’ll water this plant everyday. I want the fruits to be ripe at once,” said
the monkey. The turtle planted the other half of the plant. She, too, watered her plant every day.
Meanwhile the monkey’s plant was dying. The leaves became withered. The bananas fell one by one.

“What’s the matter with my plant?” “Friend Turtle, may I see your plant?” asked the monkey. “Is
this your plant? Why did my plant die? Your plant is very much alive. It has leaves already and blossoms
are coming out,” said the monkey.

“I don’t know, Mr. Monkey. I planted the part that you gave me. I water it every day,” said the
turtle. “I can’t take this,” said the monkey angrily. “You fooled me! This is what I’ll do.” The monkey got
angry. He picked up the turtle and threw him into the river. “Ha! Ha! Ha! Poor Mr. Monkey! He did not
know that the river is my home,” said the turtle laughing.

The monkey went away sadly. He would have to look for food again.

Almost Quarrel

There was a one-week vacation. Rudy visited his Aunt Nelia’s home in a farm. The farm was in a
small and peaceful town.
One afternoon, Rudy showed his cousin Glenn a picture of himself standing beside a swimming pool.
Glenn looked at Rudy’s picture several times. He liked the thought of him swimming in that pool. “At home”
Rudy said, “I could be in that swimming pool right now. I could smell the barbecue we cook near the pool.”
Rudy felt homesick.
Glenn did not say anything. Rudy boasted, “Everything is bigger and better in the city. There are wide
parks and big stores. There are many cars and bright lights on the streets. There are tall buildings and modern
appliances.” Glenn felt bad. He found Rudy too proud. “We’ll maybe you are right,” Glenn told Rudy. “But we
have many things here that you don’t have in the city. You don’t have a big yard. You don’t have a farm with
tame animals near you. You don’t have a lovely pond. You don’t have fresh air.”
Rudy could not answer. “You never caught fish until you came here,” Glenn added. “You never
played in the moonlight but here.”
Just then, Mother came out from kitchen. She looked at those angry faces. “Why, boys,” she asked,
“What is the matter with you? You can never settle a thing by quarrelling about it. Remember, good boys are
peace lovers.”
Mother went on as Rudy and Glenn listened attentively. “A city is a good place to live in. so is a farm.
Each has good things in it. Each is different from the other. No one can have everything. So there is no need to
quarrel over it. Do you understand me?”
Rudy and Glenn nodded and smiled at each other. They shook hands and looked at the picture again.

The King of the Forest

The lion is called the king of the forest. He is big and strong. So the smaller animals are afraid
of him. But not his wife, Queen Lioness.
One morning the king of the forest was very angry. His wife, the queen, had said something
he did not like. She had told king lion that he had bad breath. So the king lion called the animals. First
he called the sheep. “Friend Sheep,” he roared, opening wide his big mouth. “Would you say that I
have bad breath?”
The sheep was a truthful animal. He thought that king lion wanted an honest answer. So the
sheep said, “I am sorry to tell you. But you really have bad breath. You must brush your teeth.”
King lion was very angry. He roared and bit the sheep to pieces. Then he called the goat. “
Mr. Goat, tell me the truth. Do I have a bad smell? Do I have bad breath?”
The goat saw the sheep’s meat and bones. He was afraid of the lion. So the goat said. “Oh,
King, I think you smell like the flowers in summer. You have a breath as sweet as an ilang-ilang…”
Before he could finish, the goat was torn to pieces. “ I do not like liars,” roared king lion. At
last the lion called the carabao. The carabao walked slowly. He looked sick. He coughed and coughed.
“Friend carabao, tell me the truth. Mrs. Lioness says that I have bad breath. She says I have a bad
smell. Is it true?”
The carabao coughed and coughed. Then he said, softly, “King lion, I have a bad cold. It
rained hard while I was plowing the field. I think I also have a cold in my head. So I cannot smell at
all. I am sorry, I cannot answer your question.” King lion nodded his head, “Go home and rest. Get
well soon.”

mother. We’re up. Shall I wake Lani up, too?” asked Lito. “Don’t, Lito,” said mother. “Let her sleep,.” “We’ll
clean the house after breakfast,” said Liza. Father and Mother went out. They took the car. Lito and Liza ate
their breakfast. After eating, they began to clean the house. Lito polished the floor. Liza swept it. After
cleaning the house, the children fixed their bedrooms.
“Hmm, we have ham and salad again,” said Lani. “We have fruits, too.” It was twelve o’clock
midnight. There was noise everywhere. The children jumped with joy. “Happy New Year!” they said. “Happy
New Year, children!” said Father and Mother. “I’ll blow my horn!” said Lito. “Me, too!” said Liza and Lani.
Father and mother got the drums and beat them as loud as they could. The children blew their horns as
loud as they could. “Come, everybody. Let’s have our Media Noche. The table is ready,” said Mother. The
family went to the dining room. They said their prayers and began to eat.
“I’d like some salad, “Lani said. “I’d like some, too, “said Liza. “I’d like bread with ham and cheese,”
said Lito. “You may eat what you want,” said mother. “Tomorrow, your Ninong and Ninang will come here
for a visit,” said Father. “We’ll wake up early for tomorrow’s Mass.” “We’ll thank God for giving us another
year. We’ll ask Him to bless all of us in the coming year,” said mother.

dress is good enough for the party,” said mother. “But mother, all
the other children will be in their new dresses,” said Tricia. “We
have no money for a new dress,” said Mother. “Our money is just
enough for food.”
Tricia was very sad. She did not go out with Rona and
the other children. She did not play with her toys. When father
came home, he saw Tricia in her room crying. “You’re crying,
Tricia. Did anyone hurt you?” he asked. Tricia looked at Father. “I want a new dress for Liza’s birthday party,”
she said. “Mother will not buy me a new one. All the other girls will have new dresses. I want a pretty new
dress,” said Tricia crying. Just then mother came in. “Tricia, haven’t you forgotten about the new dress? I told
you, we have no money. Our money is just enough for food. You can wait until next pay day.” “Yes. Tricia.
Pay day is still next week,” said father. “Come, let’s go to my room.” Father and Mother sat down with Tricia.
“Tricia, a new dress will not make you happy,” said mother. “Pretty things do not always make us happy.
When we are good, we’re happy. When we make friends, we’re happy. When you obey your father and
mother, you’re happy. When we do what God wants us to do, we make Him happy,” said Father. “Money and
pretty things do not always make us happy,” said Mother. “You may go now and play. When the day comes

The Hen With Silver Eggs

In a far away city, there lived a woman with her old mother. The woman sold chickens in the market.
One day, she was left with a hen that she was not able to sell. “Mother, look at this hen. I wasn’t able to sell it.
Let’s just take care of her,” said the woman. “I’ll take care of this hen. I’ll put her in the hen house,” said the
old mother. “You may give her corn to eat and clean water to drink. She may lay eggs soon,” said the woman.

The woman helped her mother take care of the hen. After she had come from the market, she would go
to the hen house. “My pet hen is already big and fat. Very soon, she will lay eggs,” said the woman to herself.
One morning, the old mother went to feed their pet hen. She was surprised to see a silver egg. Their hen had
laid a big silver egg. “A silver egg! My hen laid a silver egg!” exclaimed the old woman. She got the egg and
went to the house. When her daughter came home from the market, the old woman showed her the silver egg.
“Oh, mother, this is a silver egg.” “If our pet hen lays more, we’ll be rich. I’ll not sell chickens anymore.”
“Yes, daughter. I’ll take care of our pet,” said the old woman. The following day, the hen laid another silver
egg. The old mother and the woman were very happy. “Oh, mother, we’ll be rich. See this egg again,” cried
the woman. “If the hen lays eggs for one month, we’ll have thirty silver eggs. We can leave this dirty old
house.” “Yes, daughter. We’ll be rich, “said the old mother. “Let us feed our pet,” said the woman. “Give her
more corn. She’ll give us more silver eggs.”

The old mother did what her daughter said. She gave the hen more corn to eat. She forgot to give her
clean water to drink. The next day the hen died. She was overfed. The old woman and her daughter cried and
cried. The hen was a big loss to them. Their dream of having a nice house was gone!

Lesson of the story: “Do not aim for more when there is enough.”

was very happy. He danced and jumped, danced and jumped.

Just then Catty came. She saw the Mousie dancing and jumping. “I’ll catch him, “ Catty said to herself.
“Oh! Oh! The cat is around,” said Mousie. “I’ll run to my hole.” Mousie ran as fast as he could, too. Catty
caught Mousie! Poor Mousie! He did not know what to do. He began to think. At last he thought of something.
“Please, do not eat me yet,” begged Mousie. “I’ll tell you something. Before you eat me, you may wash your
face first. Everyone washes his face first before eating. You must do it.” “ Will I do it? Will I do it? Oh, yes!
I’ll wash my face first before I eat you,” said Catty. And she began to wash her face.

While Catty was washing her face, Mousie ran away as fast as he could. He was very tired when he
reached his hole. Poor Catty! Mousie fooled her. She was sorry that she let the mouse go. “I will not follow
what that mouse said. I’ll eat first before I wash my face. I do not care what others do. I’ll do what I want.”
