Title: “Automatic Star-Delta Starter Using Relays and Adjustable Electronic Timer for 3 Phase
Load”

Abstract: The three phase load draw high value of current during its starting operation as
compared to full load running conditions. This project implements the use of relays and
electronic timer which provides low current start to the three phase load and protects it from
inrush currents as well. Load if not switched to delta mode of operation within a few seconds
then motor can draw heavy current and burn out itself, so a sensitive protection and switching
device are needed to avoid such conditions and protect the three phase load. For this purpose we
use automatic star delta starters with relays and electronic timer with the help of which we can
switch the mode of operation of the load from star mode drawing low current to delta mode
drawing the full load current. This will be used for best protection of load against high current.

The single phasing can occur as a result of a fuse blowing or a protective device opening
on one phase of the load. Even though the load will continue to operate in this condition, the load
will heat up very quickly and it is essential that the load be removed from service by the opening
of the load circuit breaker or some other type of protective device. This method is having single
phasing protection with the use of optocoupler. Optocoupler consists of LED and phototransistor,
when the current flowing through the LED is interrupted, the infrared emitted light is cut off,
causing the photo transistor to cease conducting. The photo transistor can be used to switch
current in the output circuit. Since there is no electrical connection between the input and output
of an optocoupler electrical isolation is achieved.
Relevance:
 Star-Delta starters are widely used due to their relatively low price.

 There are no limits to the number of times they can be operated.

 The components require very little space.

 The starting current is reduced to approximately one-third.

 Single phasing effect is overcome by the use of optocoupler.

 When compared to manual starter automatic starter is preferred which changes

from star to delta with a specific time interval.

Conclusion: In order to protect the three phase load from high currents, automatic star to delta
conversion using relays and timer is achieved, where the mode of operation of load from star
connection which will be drawing less current is switched to delta mode of operation drawing
more current and thus protected from high inrush of current at starting. This star to delta
conversion is dependent on the time delay which is designed with the help of RC constant. After
the certain time delay gained from the timer, the switching from star to delta mode of operation
is achieved automatically by differentiating the intensities of 3 phase lamp load.

Three phase loads are used due to their low cost, rugged construction, high efficiency.
Meanwhile, the protection of three phase load from fault conditions is also necessary. As our
project deals with the protection of laod from single phasing fault condition and in order to
achieve the protection, a fault condition is created and it is overcome with the help of comparator
and optocoupler stage, where the load is disconnected automatically instead of getting damaged.

Title of the project: “Smart Extension Box”

Abstract: Houses are designed with few numbers of plugs. Therefore a problem arises when
many appliances have to be connected at the same time. To solve this problem extension boxes
have been designed.
Our aim will be to solve the same problem and some others day to day electrical
problems, by making the same kind of device, with some more features. The common problems
faced by consumers are providing a protection for their appliances, Safety (prevention of electric
shock), saving energy thereby money.
To solve the above problems, the device will be made to have the following features,
Individual fuse protection for each plug point, Overall fuse protection, Wireless control through
mobile application, Programmable device (timer mode), Electrical parameters monitoring and
consumption estimation, Open line protection, Smart OFF. The device will be based on a
microcontroller and some basics components like LCD, push buttons, sensors, etc.

Relevance:

 Individual and overall fuse protection

 Wireless control through mobile app
 Timer based programmable device
 Electrical parameters monitoring
 Open line prevention
 Smart OFF
 Bypassing mode
 Voltage regulation
Conclusion: We have designed an extension box which is able to monitor voltage, current and
temperature inside the device. The parameters monitoring and control of the device can be done
through a mobile phone.
The main objective of our project “SMART EXTENSION BOX” is to monitor some
basic parameters such as voltage, current, power, energy and temperature inside the device,
remotely, using a mobile phone. This device has some protection systems, which are useful for
the safety of the connected appliances. Monitoring those parameters allows analysis to be
performed.
The project has been successfully designed and tested. The presence of every module has
been reasoned out and placed carefully, thus contributing to the best working of the unit.
