Sermon Outline

“Jesus is Greater”
Revelation 1:1-20
Joshua Harris
April 12, 2015

Main Idea: Jesus is greater than we can comprehend. God gave us the book of Revelation to
open our eyes—to awaken our souls to the breathtaking sweep of Christ’s great redemption.
Revelation tells us there is more than what our eyes can see. It stirs our imaginations and
senses to see the “real reality” behind the veil of what is visible. It calls us to see Jesus again.

Sermon Outline:
Revelation, chapter 1:1-20
1. Jesus is greater than we can imagine.
2. Jesus loves us and has freed us from our sin.
3. Jesus is in our midst.
Closing selections from Revelation (chapter 5, 12:10-12, 19:6-9; 21:1-5; 22:3-5, 16-21)

Key Quotes:
“It’s so easy with our mortgages, our minivans, our jobs and our busy activities to forget that
there is more than just the earthly side of the story. We forget that there is so much more.”
Josh

“We need to see Jesus—to meet his blazing eyes of heart-searching holiness, to wake up at
the trumpet blast of his voice, to respond to his jealous demand for exclusive and passionate
loyalty. Shocked insensible by the impact of his splendor, we need them to hear his words of
compassionate comfort, quelling our fears and quickening our hopes. Every congregation,
whatever its struggle at its post on the battlefront, needs to fix its eyes on Jesus, the pioneer
and perfecter of faith (Heb. 12:2).” Dennis Johnson

Fellowship Starters:
1. Read Revelation 1:1-20 together and then open in prayer.
2. Read the 1st quote above and discuss the reality of how hard it is in life to be tempted to
simply focus on our daily challenges and struggles apart from God.
3. Read the 2nd quote and discuss the solution to that temptation.
4. Discuss the broader topic of our relationship with God in and through reading, meditating
on, and praying through Scripture. For many of us we have, or can, become familiar with
Jesus. We can even at times find ourselves ignoring him altogether. If we are going to
“see” Jesus, what is the best way to do that? Read all or a part of John, 14, 15 and/or 17
and hear and re-mind one another of the amazing promises (14 & 15) and prayers (17) that
Jesus makes to and for us.
5. Josh closed with reading several sections of the Book of Revelation (see the list above in
the outline). Chose a section or 2 to read together.
6. Close in prayer for one another.
