Growth mindset

At Bright Horizons, we teach children

about and follow a "Growth Mindset"
approach.
This is a belief (based on
neuroscientific research and
evidence) that our brains can
grow and become smarter.
Our philosophy as a school is based
around this and teachers encourage
students to take
on challenges and push
themselves because that is
the best way to "grow our
brains". Effort and
hard work are praised, as
this helps to promote
a growth mindset.

A brief history

Bright Horizons - IBSZ primary school was

founded in 2013. The primary school was
established after the success of the Kindregartens,
which opened in 2006 (https://kindergarten.hr/).
Bright Horizons is verified by the Croatian
Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.
In 2013 we started with 7 pupils, attending Year 1.
In the School Year 2017-18 we
have 84 pupils from Year 1 to Year 6.

The IBSZ Bright Horizons is a member of COBIS

(Council of British International Schools).
The IBSZ Bright Horizons cooperates closely
with the British Embassy in Zagreb and
with the British Council in Zagreb.
Curriculum

At Bright Horizons we deliver a broad, balanced

and creative curriculum which whilst fulfilling the
school aims is organised in such a way as to
deliver the requirements of the English National
Curriculum (maths is enriched by Singapore
Maths) and the International Primary Curriculum
(IPC). This provides cross-curricular learning
within an international context and enables
pupils to easily switch to a new school when
they move abroad. All lessons are taught in
English (except for Croatian).
The English National Curriculum is divided into
four Key Stages that children are taken through
during their school life.

Organisation

We aim to keep our class sizes balanced

as we recognise the benefits of smaller
classes. The class teacher for each
class is responsible for planning and
monitoring the children's work.
We value the partnership between
school and home and endeavour to keep
parents fully informed about their child's
Uniform
progress. Written reports are sent home
to parents at the end of the Autumn and
Summer terms. Furthermore, there are
individual meetings at the end of each
term for private consultations between
parents and teacher.

School meals

The Bright Horizons’ lunch service is

provided through in-house catering.
Our aim is to ensure a high – quality
complete meal. Additionally all pupils are
provided with a nutritious snack in the
morning and afternoon.

cooking facilities for school meals onsite

Inclusion
English as an additional language (EAL)
A number of our children have particular learning
and assessment requirements which are linked to
their progress in English as an additional
language. Their inability to fully access the
curriculum is because their communicative skills
are not advanced enough. In our school teachers
take action to help children who are learning
English as an additional language through various
means: developing their spoken language through
play, role-play, repetitious rhymes, songs, games
and circle activities.

Special Educational Needs

Great attention is paid to providing a curriculum
which is differentiated and meets all children’s
needs. In some cases, however, extra support
and/or advice is needed. Initially, in-school
support is offered based on an individual
education plan. Extra, focused support may be
given to such pupils in small working groups or
even individually. The school is also able to draw
on the advice given by outside agencies such as
educational psychologists, speech therapists, and
occupational therapists. We are keen to involve
parents as much as possible should children need
extra support in school.
