Herbal Smoking Mixture

Guest Author - Amelia Tucker

Herbs have been smoked for centuries in rituals and simply for pleasure. The relaxing pipe of an herbal/tobacco
mixture smoked in friendship on occasion has changed to smoking out of addiction and the inability to control
the cravings. Smoking changed from relaxing to necessity. If you are a smoker who is trying to quit or simply a
smoker who would like to change to a more natural and less toxic means of lighting up, there are herbs that can
fit the bill.

A simple herbal mixture that you can create will be mixed with a small amount of loose tobacco then slowly
reduce the tobacco percentage until the nicotine habit is gone. You can put together this mixture using many
different types of herbs and they are all readily available. My recipe is simply one of an infinite number of
mixtures. You can try this one and change it to suit your taste. There are many more safe, satisfying herbs and
barks that can be included to suit any taste you are trying to achieve. Remember that an herbal blend is not
meant to mirror the taste of tobacco. It is mixed for taste and effect. In my personal blend that I have created for
the smokers I know includes:

Mullein - included to help expel the buildup that is present in a smoker’s lungs also helpful for clearing the
lungs after a chest cold. It is also a good base for any smoking mixture as it doesn’t have any real taste of its
own and makes a good filler.

Plantain- reduces the urge to smoke. Smokers have said that after smoking a mixture containing plantain, they
forget to smoke their next time or that the following cigarette isn’t satisfying.

Sage- included for taste. Try it lightly at first.

5
Yarrow flowers- again for taste.

Mints- not a lot is needed to add taste

Lemon balm- adds a light lemony flavor

Catnip- of the mint family but does have a calming quality to it. If you are looking for a mind altering addition
to your herbal smoke, you wont find it in catnip. But it is a nice addition.

I mix the plantain, mullein, yarrow and sage in a 1:1:1 ratio then add in as much of the others as I would like..I
am no longer a smoker so I go by smell. You can adjust your mixture to taste as you go.

Once you get your herbal mixture together in a bowl, you will crush and rub the herbs by hand until they are in
small pieces. If you are using papers to roll cigarettes then you need to be especially sure to remove the stems
and bits of sharp pieces so they do not poke through the finished product. You can not ‘over’ crush the mixture
and the smaller the pieces are, the better the resulting taste.

Place the crushed mixture into a jar and tape a moist piece of gauze to the inside of the lid, and seal for 3 to 5
days. This is to make the herbal mix pliable and easier to smoke. After this time, you can then add loose tobacco
to complete the mix. I recommend adding 25% tobacco to the entire mixture and see if you enjoy the smoke.
You can always add more tobacco.

I hope you enjoy this smoking blend and any recipes you come up with.

Herbs to help you quit smoking

How to make herbal smoking mixture

The basic mixture is made from sage leaves (salvia officinalis or salvia purpurea), and coltsfoot leaves
(tussilago farfara). Sage burns well and makes a good base for any smoking mixture. Coltsfoot helps to relieve
lung congestion and coughs.

Basic Ingredients

1 oz/ 30g oz dried sage

1 oz /30g dried coltsfoot

4 tablespoons of warm water

4 teaspoons of sugar or honey.

6
Method

1. Put the herbs together in a mixing bowl, removing any stalks.

2. Dissolve the honey in the water and add it to the herbs 1 teaspoonful at a time.

3. Rub it well into the leaves with your hands till slightly damp.

4. Spread the mixture out on a shallow dish for tray for 2 or 3 days, turning occasionally.

5. When it is dry enough to burn, but not parched, put it in an airtight container or tin.

The mixture can be smoked in cigarettes, burnt on a charcoal block or inhaled through a paper tube.

Try adding 2 teaspoons of aromatic herbs such as lavender, oregano, aniseeds, or thyme for flavour and aroma.
Use a tablespoon of warm water and 1 teaspoon of honey or sugar for every ½ oz /15g of herbs.

Some herbs have a calming effect - helpful when giving up an addiction. Try adding hops, chamomile flowers,
or skullcap.

Other herbs that have been successfully used in smoking mixtures include: mullein, comfrey, betony leaves,
mallow, mint, hop leaves, catnip, tarragon, basil, lemon balm, jasmine, geranium, carnation, bergamot, fennel
seeds and vanilla pods. Be creative and use herbs growing wild or in your garden.

Rob’s Alternative Tobacco

This is made using field horsetail (equisetum arvense), a wild herb that contains a small amount of nicotine.
Rob found it helpful in giving up smoking and only needed it for a while. You can either cure it as in the recipe
above, or rub the dried herb in the hands like pipe tobacco. It smokes well and has a good taste.

Try adding hops or damiana for extra help if you need it.

Smoke inhalants

Smoke Inhalations sooth a tight chest, congestion and asthma. You don’t have to inhale the smoke directly. You
can burn aromatic herbs such as peppermint, cedar, lavender, rosemary or sage as incense or sprinkle them onto
a hot fire. You can make a mixture, for example:

2 teaspoons of sage or coltsfoot.

1 teaspoon fennel seeds or

1 teaspoon aniseeds

Pinch of spice e.g. nutmeg

and cleansing and to get rid of evil spirits, misfortune and calamity. The Holy Wood has often been used in

lit many times.

Banisteriopsis caapi Whole Vine Pieces

Banisteriopsis caapi

view photoThese 100% organic Banisteriopsis caapi vine pieces are the "cielo" strain, also known as "yellow".
The vine has been cut in small segments that are up to 4" thick! They are aged to perfection before being
harvested and have been cared for with deep respect during preparation to ensure they remain extremely high
grade specimens.

Traditional & Modern Use:

The B. caapi plant has been recognized for its shamanic potential for hundreds of years as a respected admixture
to the religious Ayahuasca brew. The other primary ingredient is Psychotria viridis which is understood to
provide the “light” while B. caapi provides the “force”. Many believe that the vines are the only part of the plant
used for divinatory purposes, but in fact several Indian tribes commonly used B. caapi leaves either on their
own or as an additive to brews or smoking blends. The Pastaza Runa Indians often use the leaves in replacement
of the vine when the vine material is not as plentiful and the Napo Runa Indians consistently add leaves to the
brew to enhance the enlightenment that the B. caapi plant has to offer. Leaves were often smoked for subtle but
familiar effects.

Rabbit Tobbacco (Pseudognaphalium Obtusifolium)

Rabbittobbacco is also known as Sweet Everlasting, Sweet White Balsam, Fragrant Life Everlasting, Fuzzy
Gussy and many other names. Also known by the scientific name Gnaphalium Obtusifolium.

Plant Type: This is a herbaceous plant, it is a annual which can reach 80cm in height (30inches). It is sometimes
a biennial. The plant is covered with a cottony down.
Leaves: The leaves are alternate. Each leaf is entire, narrow and, like the rest of the plant, wooly
Flowers: The flower parts are not discernable with the naked eye and are up to 1cm long (0.4 inches) and are up
to 0.5cm wide (0.2 inches). They are whitish to light brown. Blooms first appear in mid summer and continue
into mid fall.
Habitat: Dry open areas.
Range: Most of eastern North America.

Look for Everlastings in abandoned fields or seasonally mowed areas especially slopes for it is not fond of low
or damp areas. The plant is slightly aromatic and has a distinctive color and form. Even in the dead of winter it
is easy to spot. Harvested while still fresh the flowers will remain intact for a long time.

8
Lore: There are many accounts of Everlasting being smoked in place of tobacco by Native Americans and
settlers alike and the smoke held a spiritual or mystic power for many Indians. The Cheyenne dropped the
leaves on hot coals and used the smoke to purify gifts to the spirits. Cheyenne warriors chewed the leaves and
rubbed there body's with it to strengthen and protect them in battle. The Menomini used the smoke after a death
to keep the ghost of a the dead from bringing nightmares and bad luck to the surviving family members. The
Potawatomi and the Chippewa use the smoke to drive away sprits (witches) from their dwellings. The
Cherokees used it in sweat baths. It was also thought by many tribes that the smoke had a restorative power that
could revive the unconscious or paralyzed.(Erichsen-Brown) The fresh juice has some reputation as an
aphrodisiac(Newcomb) though how it is used or how much I, sadly, do not know.

Medical Uses: Everlasting is certainly astringent and is commonly thought to be sedative, diuretic and a very
mild pain reliever. Both the smoke and a leaf tea have been use to treat various throat and bronchial conditions
from colds to asthma and especially for coughs. It is also used for diarrhea. Sores on the skin and in the mouth
are poulticed with it as are bruises and it has been highly recommended for burns.

Similar Species: Clammy Everlasting (P. macounii) is very similar. The leaves are wider at the base and clasp
the stem whereas the leaves or Sweet Everlasting taper slightly at the base.
Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) (note that it is a different genus) also is very similar. It has wider
flower heads that are almost pure white. It is a perennial. This plant is often used in dried flower arrangements.
Male and female flowers are on different plants. It's range extends only as far south as the Virginias.
Less similar are members of the Antennaria genus Pussytoes .

The term " cigarette" has a FRENCH origin and means a cylinder of tobacco rolled in paper for smoking as it is
commonly known, but can apply to similar devices containing herbs.

Cigarette Ingredients
The ingredients and additives in cigarettes when burned, create toxic, harmful chemical compounds. Those
chemicals, which number 4000 or more, contain poisons and carcinogens that damage our bodies when inhaled
directly or indirectly through secondhand smoke. Scientists have yet to identify all of the chemicals present in
cigarette smoke, but the body of knowledge on the deadly effects of smoking continues to expand.

It's chilling to think about not only how smokers poison themselves, but what others are exposed to by breathing
in the secondhand smoke. The next time you're missing your old buddy, the cigarette, take a good long look at
this list and see them for what they are: a delivery system for toxic chemicals and carcinogens.

Cigarettes offer people only a multitude of smoking-related diseases and ultimately death.

Information
Tobacco is a plant grown for its leaves, which are smoked, chewed, or sniffed for a variety of effects. It is
considered an addictive substance because it contains the chemical nicotine.

In addition to nicotine, tobacco contains over 19 known cancer-causing chemicals (most are collectively known
as "tar") and more than 4,000 other chemicals. These include acetone, ammonia, carbon monoxide, cyanide,
methane, propane, and butane.

Over 38 million people in the United States have successfully quit smoking. Yet there are still around 50 million
Americans who smoke. The majority say they would like to quit.

And, while the number of cigarette smokers in the United States has dropped over recent years, the number of
smokeless tobacco users has steadily risen. This trend is likely related to the false belief that smokeless tobacco
is safe. It is NOT. Smokeless tobacco carries many of the same health risks as cigarettes. Some people who

13
want to stop smoking, but who still crave the nicotine, turn to smokeless tobacco wrongly thinking that they are
doing something good for themselves.

The Effects Of Nicotine

•Nicotine acts as both a stimulant and depressant on your body. It increases your bowel activity, saliva, and
bronchial secretions. It stimulates the nervous system and may cause tremors in the inexperienced user, or even
convulsions with high doses.
•After stimulation, there's a phase that depresses the muscles in your airways. As a euphoric agent, nicotine
causes relaxation from stressful situations.
•On average, tobacco increases your heart rate 10 to 20 beats per minute, and it increases your blood pressure
reading by 5 to 10 mmHg (because it constricts the blood vessels).
•Nicotine may also cause sweating, nausea, and diarrhea. Nicotine elevates the blood level of glucose (blood
sugar) and increases insulin production. Nicotine also tends to enhance platelet aggregation, which may lead to
blood clots.
•Nicotine temporarily stimulates memory and alertness. People who use tobacco frequently depend on it to help
them accomplish certain tasks at specific levels of performance. Nicotine also tends to be an appetite
suppressant. (For this reason, fear of weight gain also influences the willingness of some people to stop
smoking.)

Finally, tobacco is highly addictive. It is considered mood and behavior altering. Tobacco is believed to have an
addictive potential comparable to alcohol, cocaine, and morphine.
