MATHS 102 Semester One, 2018 Tutorial 3

This is a skills based tutorial, to give you practice with the concepts covered in the course this
week. Do not hesitate to discuss the questions and concepts with your classmates and/or the
tutor. Any questions you do not have time to complete in the tutorial can be finished at home,
or in the Mathematics Assistance Room with the help of the tutors there.
Your participation will be recorded, as explained in the study guide. You will get credit for
this tutorial if the tutor determines that you made sufficient effort during the tutorial hour.

Basic Algebra - Section 3.1


1. (a) Find the gradient of the line between the points with coordinates (−2, 7) and (1, −2).

(c) Find an equation for the line between the points with coordinates (−2, −1) and (−1, 3).
(d) Find an equation for the line that passes through the point with coordinates (−2, 4) and

(f) Find an equation for the line that passes through the point with coordinates (−1, 3) and

2. Find the intersection of each pair of equations:


(a) y = 4x, y = x − 6 (d) y = 2x + 4, y = 2x + 24
(b) y = 4x − 2, y = 3x + 1 (e) y = x − 2, y = −4x + 5
(c) y = 2x + 6, y − 3x = 6 (f) 2y = −2x + 8, y = −x + 4

3. A store of grain starts with 25, 000 tonnes and one week later has 21, 500 tonnes. If we assume
this is a linear relationship:
(a) How much grain will be there after two weeks?
(b) How much grain will be there after three weeks?
(c) When will the store run out of grain?
(d) Write an equation for the amount of grain in the store w weeks after it is full.

4. Consider two real numbers a and b. The number a is two times the number b plus 17, and the
sum of the two numbers is 89.
Write a pair of linear equations describing this situation and solve to find the value of the
numbers a and b.
