The most common terpene in cannabis is myrcene, which is also found in hops.

Myrcene has a subtle balsamic aroma and is thought to be the terpene that causes
the "indica" effect, though it's also found in many varieties of cannabis that are
considered "sativas".

THC, the cannabinoid primarily responsible for cannabis' psychoactivity, has no

odor whatsoever. Drug dogs are typically trained to detect a sesquiterpene on
cannabis called caryophyllene, which is also found in black pepper and cloves.
Back in the day, one indication of high-grade cannabis was said to its peppery
aroma. The oxidation product of caryophyllene has a very pungent smell and it's
easy for the sensitive noses of dogs to detect.

The other most common terpenes produced by cannabis include limonene, terpinolene,
ocimene, pinenes, and linalool.
