1. General
This document describes the commissioning of the propulsion and cargo pump drive system
consisting of ACS800 frequency converter drives, drive transformers, motors, drive control units
and remote control system.
The purpose of commissioning is to make the equipment ready for operation, and demonstrate
that it functions as documented.
After the commissioning is finished the customer receives a commissioning report. When the
report is properly filled in, the warranty time is initiated. The condition for proper warranty is that
the commissioning report together with the parameter files is sent to ABB Marine department.
Commissioning of the thrusters drive system must only be done by properly skilled, trained and
certified engineers.
Before commissioning begins, certain preconditions must be met as described in the relevant
sections of this document. Verification of these preconditions is referred to as pre-
commissioning.
Commissioning of the drive system is divided into three stages: “cold" and "hot" commissioning
of the drives, and commissioning of the DCUs.

Cold Commissioning
 Internal cabling, auxiliary voltage, converter cooling system
 Drive I/O, insulation resistance measurements, feeder breaker control
 SW parameterization

Hot Commissioning
 Charging converter, first start, no-load tuning and running tests
 Testing with remote control system
 Load tests: tuning controllers, mechanical operation and heat run

DCU Commissioning
 Commissioning of the Drive Control Units (DCUs)

2. HSE (Health, Safety & Environment)


 ABB personnel working at site are required to abide by all ABB and customer HSE
regulations as well as local laws.
 The customer is responsible for site HSE management, including implementing safe
working plans and procedures.
 SWA (Safe Work Analysis) shall be performed for all jobs.
 All safety instructions and warnings in the equipment manuals shall be respected.

3. Definition of Responsibility
3.1 Definition of ABB Responsibility
ABB will be responsible for allocating a skilled commissioning engineer for performing the
commissioning activities as herein described. This includes the availability of a commissioning
engineer in the foreseen commissioning stages.
3.2 Definition of Shipyard Responsibility
The shipyard is responsible for the overall organization of all tasks, including coordination with
other suppliers. This implies that each activity is planned and performed in a structured manner
with the associated supplier(s) present when system interfaces or dependent tasks are to be
performed.
Yard shall communicate updated schedules to the ABB project organization according to the
agreed procedure. Unless otherwise agreed ABB and the commissioning engineer demand 15
days prior notice in which to be finally confirmed 7 days in advance.

4. Utilities and tools


The following utilities and tools are required.

4.1 Commissioning tools supplied by ABB:


 Hand tools
 Testing tools as required

4.2 Tools supplied by shipyard:


 Hand lamps, ladders
 Tools on request from ABB (i.e. drill, etc.)
 Megger instrument (1000VDC & 500VDC)
 Walkie-talkie
 Personnel to assist when needed

4.3 Other requirements:


 Safe storage for document and tools at site
 Office desk and access to telephone and internet

5. Commissioning documents
The commissioning engineer will bring a hard copy of the documentation for the drive
system. This will be used for testing during commissioning, and marked up as appropriate.
The commissioning engineer will also have access to soft copies of documentation for the
other systems which are included in the ABB delivery.

6. Preparation for Commissioning (Project Management Input)


The following items must be prepared before the start of commissioning:

Motor parameters and test reports are available


Commissioning CD with EDMS and FAT documentation is available
Commissioning document folder available
Job cards for carry-over work prepared and sent
Pre-setting of parameters is available
Commissioning spares are available or sent
Special tuning instructions (Toolbox) are available
Commissioning program is available
Instructions for commissioning are received
Preparative work for possible drive upgrade is done
Latest updates of SW are received

7. Preconditions for Commissioning (Site Management Input)


The following preconditions must be fulfilled before the commissioning of the drive can
start.

Commissioning preparation meeting held between ABB and shipyard


The drives are installed and connected according to the installation manuals
The main switchboard is ready for operation
The drive transformers are installed and connected according to the
installation manuals
The motor is installed, aligned, uncoupled and ready for operation according
to the motor manuals. An official installation report must be available
Grounding cables of transformers, converter and motor are connected
All cable screens are connected
Insulation of cables, transformers and motor has been tested and complies
with the specification. An official test report must be available. Insulation test
of the converter is already performed in factory and therefore need not be
repeated
Main power supply is available
The motor driven load (process) is ready for coupling and operation
Vessel cooling systems available

8.2 Site Conditions

8.2.1 Cleanness
Construction works must be finished in the rooms where the drive system equipment is
installed. Cable openings should be closed to avoid dust entering into the converter
cabinets and transformer and motor enclosures.
The rooms must be clean and free of dust. Waste from any installation work must be
removed. Before any equipment is energised, it must be checked that foreign objects and
dust have been removed from the cabinets and enclosures. It is very important that the
cabinets and enclosures are free of dust to prevent weakening of the busbar insulation.
The motor area must be cleaned so that it is safe to run the motors. All waste that can be
in contact with the shaft must be removed. Safety barriers must be set up to prevent
people from coming in contact with moving parts during testing.
The cleanness of the equipment and the safety barriers should be checked repeatedly
during commissioning and each commissioning engineer should check these before
starting to work.

Construction work has finished


Painting work inside the rooms has been finished and equipment has not
been painted inside.
Cable termination work is complete
Converter rooms are clean
Converter cabinets are cleaned of dust and foreign objects
Motor enclosures and area are cleaned of dust and foreign objects
Transformer enclosures and area are cleaned of dust and foreign objects
Braking resistor enclosures and area are cleaned of dust and foreign objects

Ambient factors such as temperature, relative humidity, air contamination, shock and
vibration must be in compliance with the stated maximum permissible levels.
Requirements for ambient condition can be found in the technical specification of the
equipment. The cooling and ventilation systems must be in operation in all rooms.

8.3 Visual inspection for damage


Before the drive system can be commissioned it is necessary to inspect all system
components carefully for damage which may have occurred during transport, storage or
installation.
Any damage found must be photographed and reported (Warranty report).

8.4 Detailed inspection of installation


The mechanical installation and the electrical connections of the converter, transformer,
motor and braking resistor (if applicable) should be checked against the manufacturer’s
installation instructions and documentation.

8.4.1 Transformers

Units have been fixed properly to the deck


Units are mounted with required clearance according to dimension drawing
Power cables are led through specified cable entries into the enclosures
Power cables are fixed inside enclosures to dedicated support
Power cable shield ends and armour are connected to PE terminals

Unused cable openings are closed
Grounding cables are connected
Auxiliary power and control cables led into auxiliary termination boxes

9. Cold commissioning of drive system


The drive system must have passed the installation checks described in the preceding
chapter before the cold commissioning is begun.

9.1 Transformers
Besides this document, the start-up procedures given in the transformer manual must be
followed. The instrumentation of the transformers will be checked during commissioning
of the receiving systems (DCU and/or IAS).

9.2 Drives
Besides this document, the start-up procedures given for the drive units must be followed.
Information regarding the different units can be found in the following manuals:

Drive self-monitoring will be checked together with the supervision functions of the ACS800

9.2.1 Auxiliary supply and internal distribution


No power must ever be switched on to the drive without the permission of the ABB
commissioning engineer. This includes main power, control power and heater
supplies.
Switch off all control power and heater supply circuit breakers and disconnectors
inside the drive, and remove power connections from control boards, before
proceeding to power up the drive.

9.2.4 Main contactor control and local emergency stop


In this test, the control inputs of the main contactors are tested.
The local emergency stop circuits function by tripping the main contactor of the drive, and
require a local reset before the drive can be restarted. When the DC switch between
drives is closed, each emergency stop circuit will trip the contactors of both drives.
This test must be performed before applying main power to the drive for the first time. The
remaining emergency stop buttons will be tested before running the motors.

10. Hot commissioning of drive


Before main power is switched on to the drives, the cold commissioning must be
completed and all possible faults eliminated. All doors and protective cover plates must be
properly closed and all preparatory works such as inspections, measurements and I/O
signal tests must be done. Lock the local emergency stop buttons in the active position,
and verify that the main contactors are open before switching on the main power.
Never switch on the main power to the drives without the permission of ABB’s
commissioning engineer.

10.1 Liquid Cooling Unit


Main power is required to run the cooling pumps. The pressure measurements must be
checked repeatedly during commissioning.

Coolant for internal cooling circuit is within ABB specification


Installation check and start-up procedure described in ACS 800 Water
Cooling Unit User’s Manual has been followed
No visible leaks inside the converter cabinets
LCU is ready for operation

10.2 Energizing the drive


Before energizing the drives, start the LCUs in service mode. The external cooling water
to the drives must be running during this test. The main contactor control signals from the
DCU must be bypassed.
Energize the drives by turning the breaker control switch first to the Start position, then to
the on position. Record the DC voltage and monitor the control and feedback signals to
and from the main contactors. Switch off the drives by turning the breaker control switch to
the off position. Energize the drives again, then retest the local emergency stop circuits.

DC bus is charged and DC voltage stabilises


The main contactors are closed after the DC bus is charged
Settings of the bender relays are correct
Voltage readings on the DSU door and CDP panel have been checked
Auxiliary transformer output voltage is within specifications

10.3 Motor start-up


When starting each motor for the first time ensure that right motor data are entered in the
parameter settings and all limits are set to safe values. The motors must not be coupled to
the driven equipment. The LCU must be started in service mode. The external cooling
water to the drives and motors must be running.
Start up all motors, following the start-up procedure given in the User’s and Firmware
Manual.

11.4 Process functions


All external signals must be tested by ABB’s commissioning engineer before proceeding
to test process functions. Depending on the torque required to turn the uncoupled motor, it
may not be possible to perform the power limitation tests before the motor is coupled to
the driven equipment. In that case these tests must be delayed until after coupling.
