RAN17.1 01 (2015-03-23)
Compared with issue Draft A (2014-12-15) of RAN17.1, 01 (2015-03-23) of RAN17.1 includes
the following changes.
2 Overview
2.1 Sectors
Sectors are classified into omnidirectional and directional sectors. An omnidirectional sector
covers a circular area of 360 degrees with an omnidirectional antenna at the center. A directional
sector uses directional antennas for coverage. For example, if a cell consists of three sectors,
each directional antenna covers 120 degrees. If a cell consists of six sectors, each directional
antenna covers 60 degrees. The areas covered by adjacent sectors overlap each other because
the actual azimuth of each sector is slightly larger than 60 or 120 degrees.
For a co-MPT base station, if services of different modes are carried on the same TX channel,
you are advised to configure the same Sector MO for these modes.
2.1.2 RF Resources
Figure 2-1 shows the mapping between sectors and radio frequency (RF) resources. As shown
in the figure, one sector corresponds to one or more RF modules and one RF module provides
two or more antenna channels. Two antenna channels can work in receive diversity mode, and
at least one channel functions as the TX channel.
Sector Antennas
The SectorAntennaRef MO defines the slot ID of the RF module corresponding to a sector
antenna and the antenna channel ID. In this manner, the MO is associated with physical RF
resources. Each RF channel on an RF module corresponds to one sector antenna, and one sector
antenna belongs to only one sector.
Sector Equipment
The SectorEqm MO defines antenna channels and their working modes in a sector. An antenna
channel can work in Tx mode, Rx mode, or Tx/Rx mode, or serve as the master or slave channel.
A sector can be equipped with multiple pieces of sector equipment.
For a co-MPT base station, if services of different modes are carried on the same TX channel,
you are advised to configure the SectorEqm MO by mode.
Generally, one set of sector equipment is configured with the TX and RX channels of the same
RRU, such as 2R cells and multi-RRU cells. In some scenarios, one set of sector equipment can
be configured with the TX and RX channels of two RRUs, such as 4R cells with two 1T2R RRUs
or cells with RF interconnection. If the antennas for multiple RF units are configured on one set
of sector equipment, these RF units must have the same model.
2.2 Cells
2.2.1 Basic Concepts Related to Cells
A cell is a coverage area that provides radio communication services for users. All cells provide
coverage for an entire radio network. If each cell of a NodeB corresponds to only one sector,
the number of cells supported by the NodeB is calculated using the following formula:
Number of cells supported by a NodeB = Number of sectors x Number of carriers in a sector
Figure 2-2 shows a typical 3x2 configuration. As shown in this figure, three sectors (sectors 0
to 2) cover a circular area and each sector uses two carriers. Therefore, there are a total of six
cells.
A cell is not equivalent to an RF coverage area or sector. Figure 2-3 shows the mapping between
cells and RF coverage areas. Cell coverage is classified into overlapping coverage and separate
coverage by the mapping between cells and RF coverage areas.
Overlapping coverage means that one cell has only one sector and therefore the cell and the
sector have the same coverage area.
Separate coverage means that one cell has more than one sector to reduce inter-cell handovers.
This type of cells is called multi-sector cells. There are various types of multi-sector cells, such
as 0.5/0.5 cells, distributed cells, and multi-RRU cells with independent demodulation.
Normal Cells
Normal cells refer to single-sector cells, as shown in Figure 2-4.
0.5/0.5 Cells
Figure 2-5 shows 0.5/0.5 cells. 0.5/0.5 cells refer to two-sector cells, and the same radio signals
are transmitted within these two sectors. 0.5/0.5 cells can be further classified depending on
whether these two sectors cover the same geographic area. If these two sectors cover the same
geographic area, the maximum transmit power in either sector is half the maximum transmit
power of the local cell. If these two sectors cover different geographic areas, the maximum
transmit power in either sector is equivalent to the maximum transmit power of the local cell.
Mixed-Multi-RRU Cells
Mixed-multi-RRU cells are specific to the LampSite solution and mainly used for indoor
coverage. A mixed-multi-RRU cell consists of the BBU, RHUB, and pRRU. Each pRRU covers
a geographical area. Multiple (up to 16) pRRUs form a sector equipment group and multiple (up
to six) sector equipment groups form a logical cell. A mixed-multi-RRU cell allows coexistence
between independent demodulation of RF signals and digital combination and division. For such
coexistence in a mixed-multi-RRU cell, uplink digital combination is implemented within a
sector equipment group and independent demodulation of RF signals is implemented between
sector equipment groups.

Figure 4-27 shows RRU hybrid configuration for a base station whose capacity is to be
expanded.
Before capacity expansion, the configuration is UMTS 3x4. Each sector has one RRU3804 that
supports four UMTS carriers.
After capacity expansion, the configuration changes to UMTS 3x8. In each sector, one RRU3806
that supports four UMTS carriers is added.
Scenario 18: Cell with Independent Demodulation of Signals from Multiple Small Cell
RRUs in One Cell
The LampSite solution consists of BBU, RRU hub (RHUB), and pico Remote Radio Unit
(pRRU). The BBU and RHUB are connected using optical fibers, and the RHUB and pRRU are
connected using Ethernet cables. For details about the Independent Demodulation of Signals
from Multiple Small Cell RRUs in One Cell Feature, see Independent Demodulation of Signals
from Multiple Small Cell RRUs in One Cell Feature Parameter Description. Typical networking
for the LampSite solution uses a star topology based on RHUBs, as shown in Figure 4-28.
In the LampSite solution, the BBU connects to an RHUB using CPRI optical fibers. A CPRI
link supports a maximum of four-level RHUB cascading. An RHUB can be connected to a
maximum of eight pRRUs for indoor coverage. pRRUs do not support cascading.

4.4.3 Precautions
The configured transmit power of an RF module in a cell must not exceed the maximum rated
power of the RF module.
For details about the maximum rated power of the RF module, see Typical Power Configurations
for Multi-Mode RF Modules and Typical Power Configurations for UMTS RF Modules.
If the transmit power of a cell exceeds the maximum rated power of an RF channel, the cell will
be unavailable.
If the total transmit power of multiple logical cells on an RF module exceeds the specified
transmit power of the RF module, the power amplifier on the RF module may be damaged. The
power configuration check is recommended to be enabled by running MML command SET
NODEBALGPARA to set the parameter PWRCHKSW to ON. Then the ALM-28211 Cell
Configuration Abnormal is reported if the total transmit power of multiple logical cells on an
RF module exceeds the specified transmit power of the RF module.
The maximum transmit power of an RF module can be queried by running the DSP
TXBRANCH command. In the local cell with Sector Type set to DIST_SECTOR
(DIST_SECTOR), the maximum transmit power on an RF module can be set by running the
MOD RRUOFLOCELL command.
For cells enabled with the Independent Demodulation of Signals from Multiple RRUs in One
Cell feature, if more than six RRUs are configured, the WBBPf or UBBPd board need to be
configured for the downlink and only the UBBPd6 board can be configured for the uplink
baseband equipment group.
