Objective: To establish the prevalence of smoking and influences of peer pressure and cigarette
advertising in high school students, between ages 11 - 17.
Methods and Materials: Cross-sectional study using stratified randomized probabilistic sampling to
obtain a sample of 265 students from a total population of 1061. Therefore, we undertook a survey
using a semi-structured autodiligenced questionnaire.
Results and Conclusions: we found a high prevalence of having ever smoked tobacco (45.6%), in
last year (38.5%) and last month prevalence (22.3%). There were no significant differences in cigarette
use between girls and boys (p=0.451); nevertheless, tobacco use increased with age and school grad-
ing (p=0.0001). Cigarette use was also correlated with the degree of peer cigarette use, indicating a
greater tendency of consumption in students as increases the number of smoking peers (p<0.0001)
and in students who watch frequently alcohol and cigarette advertising on TV (P=0.007).
Cigarette consumption in teenager students, is related to age, school grading, alcohol and cigarette
advertising on TV as well as the relationship between school friends, love partners and relatives who
smoke. There has been a significative increase in women consumption similar to observed in men.
One third of smokers have tried to quit.
