Movie analysis

The Kissing Booth is a romantic comedy film based on teen author Beth Reekles' novel of the same
name, “The Kissing Booth”. The film was released on 11 May 2018, by Netflix. I will analyze the
scenes from 1:12:15 till 1:17:00.

Location- the house of the Flynn family:

The scene starts with Elle Evans kissing Noah Flynn, the brother of Lee Flynn, in their home. Lee
catches them kissing and leaves disappointed and shocked from the house. Elle begs Noah to stay in
the house and to let her handle the situation with Lee.

Location-the back and front yard of the Flynn house:

She runs to catch Lee and explain him why she and his brother kept their relationship a secret. Lee is
so disappointed of his best friend that he actually starts to cry. Then he starts questioning her if this
was what she was hiding from him. Noah catches up with them and tries to explain to his brother
that it wasn’t just her fault, it was also his. Lee starts to yell at his brother saying that he shouldn’t
even say anything because all this time he asked all the guys from town not to get close to Elle
reasoning that is was for her protection, while now he treats her like a slut picked up from a club. He
asks them if they had sex up until now and they are not able to deny, so they fail to reply to this
question. Lee tells them that he knew it and accuses Elle of lying to him and sleeping with his
brother. She cries. Noah tries to stop Lee by telling him that what he said was enough, but he doesn’t
listen. They start to fight and Lee hits him. Noah puts him down and tries to calm him down, while
Elle begs him to stop and to get off from him. After he calms down, Noah gets off from him and he
runs to his car. Elle runs after him and begs him to stop and to no leave. He tells her that she broke
rule number 9 (which specifically states, “relatives of your best friend are totally off-limits") and she
tells him desperately that she didn’t mean for this to happen. He tells her one big truth, which is that
his whole life his brother got what he wanted and that the only thing that he had and his brother
didn’t had was her and that now he has her too. Lee tells her that they deserve each other and he
leaves heartbroken. Noah comes and tries to comfort Elle, but she blames his for following them
when she asked him not to, as if he wanted to make things worse. He tells her that she can’t just put
all the blame on him. The scene ends with Elle telling him to leave her alone and him telling her no
problem and he leaves with his motorcycle.

Location-the house of the Evans family:

From 1:16:00 to 1:17:00 we see Elle laying in her bed and thinking probably at the whole situation in
which she was earlier involved. Her father comes into the room and tells her that she there is
someone there to see her and she anxiously asks if it is Lee. Then in the room comes Lee’s and
Noah’s mom (the two families were friend one with the other). Her father leaves them alone so that
they could talk. Elle tells her that she is very sorry about lying to Lee regarding her relationship with
Noah and that she ruined her friendship with Lee. And their mom tells tries to calm her down by

telling her that although she and her mother were friends for more than 20 years and that even
though she was her best friend, they also fought sometimes.

1. Camera movement:

The zoom in is used to emphasize the face of Noah when Elle begs him desperately to stay in the
house and follows up Lee in the garden. It is used to emphasize his face and eyes filled with concern
and even sadness maybe, because he didn’t expected Lee to surprise them kissing.

The camera moves along with the subjects (mobile camera).

2. Editing:

I believe that we have a classical cutting in these scenes. I experienced lots of feelings during these
scenes. Firstly, l was disappointed and sad because Elle and Noah were busted by Lee. Elle wanted to
tell Lee about her relationship with his brother that night, but she couldn’t do it anymore because
Lee surprised them kissing. I was really sad for Lee and also for Elle and I wanted Lee to understand
Elle and that she fell in love with her brother, but as expected, he was furious and mad at them. I
myself experienced anger and disappointment along with them.

3. Lightning:

We have front lightening and high key lightening of the overall atmosphere.

4. Shots:

During the kissing scene we have a medium close-up shot with Elle and Noah; we have a medium
shot with Lee when he catches them kissing. After that, we have medium close-up shots when they
get up and a high angle shot and also a low angle shot when Elle begs Noah to stay in the house and
let her handle Lee. We have this high angle and low angle because of their heights, Noah is taller
than Elle probably with at least 30 or 40 centimeters. Then we have a close-up shot of Noah’s face at
an eye level shot. We have a high level shot when Lee runs outside and Elle tries to catch him. When
they stop, we have a long shot of Lee and Elle and after that we have medium-close up shots with
them talking. When Noah joins them we have medium shots with the 3 of them and medium close
ups shots while they fight. We see long shots with Lee and Noah while they are on the ground
fighting. And we have medium close-up shots of their faces while they try to calm down. Lee even
cries and that’s why it is used a medium close-up shot, to emphasize that he is really hurt by his best
friend’s affair with his brother. And after that we see only medium and medium close-up shots with
them. We have a long shot with Noah while he leaves with his motorcycle.

At Elle’s house with her dad and Lee’s and Noah’s mom, we see medium and medium close-up shots
of them.

We hear in these scene non-diegetic sounds (low music) which are meant to create suspense. We
hear it, but the characters don’t. We hear the sound made by the car when Lee starts it and leaves
and the sound made by the motorcycle when Noah leaves. And we also have internal diegetic sound,
when we hear Elle’s thoughts regarding her feelings in that specific moment (when both boys are
gone).
