1. ONOMATOPOEIA
a. Meaning
i. Onomatopoeia is when a word’s pronunciation imitates its sound. When you say
an onomatopoeic word, the utterance itself is reminiscent of the sound to which
the word refers.
b. Examples
i. The wounded soldier groaned.
ii. As Tom got closer, the dog began growling.
iii. Juan had a hard time hearing the teacher over his grumbling stomach.
iv. When Mom asked Tommy how his day went, Tommy just grunted.
v. Vince gulped down the Mountain Dew.
2. ALLITERATION
a. Meaning
i. Alliteration is a term that describes a literary stylistic device. Alliteration occurs
when a series of words in a row (or close together) have the same first consonant
sound.
b. Examples
i. Home sweet home
ii. Last laugh
iii. Leave in the Lurch
iv. Living the life
v. Look to your laurels
3. ASSONANCE
a. Meaning
i. Assonance is the figurative term used to refer to the repetition of a vowel sound
in a line of text or poetry. The words have to be close enough together for the
repetition to be noticeable.
b. Examples
I never heard before of a ship so well furbished
with battle tackle…
…no wise man in hall or weathered veteran…
…asleep from their feasting…
…they wept to heaven…
