NEW YORK CITY’S CASK BEER & FOOD FESTIVAL

25th – 26th SEPTEMBER 2010
Also known as ‘real ale’, hence the name of this festival, cask-conditioned ale (or, sometimes, lager) is unfiltered, unpasteurized
craft beer served without any forced carbonation pushing it to the tap, served either by gravity-dispense straight from a tap
hammered into the front of the cask, or by use of a beer engine (also known as a ‘handpump’ or ‘handpull’) - a simple manual
pump clamped to the bar. It is beer as was standard prior to modern kegging and chilling techniques, benefitting from the natural
soft carbonation, lack of extraneous CO2, and a serving temperature where it can be tasted properly. Cask ale or lager is beer in
its natural state, and should be served at around 54 degrees Fahrenheit for optimum mouthfeel. Carbonation is natural and soft,
coming from the yeast as it continues to ferment the beer in the cask. Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the
popularity and availability of cask-conditioned beer – unsurprising as it is the cream of the rapidly expanding craft beer industry.
Over 50 bars and restaurants in New York City now have permanent cask availability, up tenfold from one decade ago.
Hello everyone and welcome to Get Real NY – a celebration of that special union that is cask beer
(also called ‘real ale’) and local artisanal foods. As you walk around the venue today, try to pair
your beer with some of the awesome food vendors around you and prepare to have a new burst of
sensation and emotion unleashed on your palate. I'm proud to say that we have some of the best
cask ales available in the nation here today along with some of NYC's top artisan food vendors and
restaurant representatives.

Our homebrew section is a must, these guys are the best in the area and have brought some
amazing brews here today for all to try. GRNY is proud to have such a great homebrew collection
that surely rivals the pros themselves (judge for yourself) and we hope you all enjoy.

Remember small beer tastings add up after a few so please drink plenty of water along with your
beer and PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY AND NEVER EVER DRINK AND DRIVE.

On behalf of myself and the entire Get Real NY committee, thank you and enjoy!

Cheers,
Patrick Donagher, GRNY Main Organizer

Casks will generally be served on a first-come-first-served basis, however certain beers that are in
short supply will be restricted to the middle hour of the session and the VIP hour (these will be
marked as such), or otherwise as stated.
Some beers may not be ready for serving initially as they need time to settle.
In most cases, once a beer has run out it’s gone for the duration of the event. When casks start to
run out, look at the cask labels to determine what is still pouring.
Beers that are marked VIP ONLY are only available to VIP session ticket holders.
Sorry, NO EXCEPTIONS.
Please order from the spot where the cask is situated, everything is arranged alphabetically by
brewery name (with the homebrew section adjacent).
To be courteous to others, please MOVE AWAY FROM THE SERVING AREAS as soon as you
have received your beer or food order.
Please drink responsibly. These cask-conditioned beers are to be savored and enjoyed, not
chugged. I hope you enjoy Get Real NY!

Cheers!
Alex Hall, GRNY Cellarperson
