ACKNOWLDEGEMENT

(In the name of ALLAH, the most beneficent, the most merciful)

To begin with, we wish to convey our heartfelt gratitude to Almighty ALLAH for His help
to complete this project successfully. No one can say that he is perfect, everyone should
admit that without the help of ALLAH and His people a man can`t get anything, so we bow
our head before Almighty ALLAH with gratitude.

This project was actually our first exposure to the practical world for which the guidance
was acquired by respective individuals at each stage. We would exclusively like to thank
our Internal Advisors Dr. Maqsood Ahmed Khan, Associate Professor and Dr. Muhammad
Fahad, Associate Professor for their continuous assistance.

We acknowledge support of Mr. Mukhtaar (Senior Lab Technician), Mr. Mazhar (Lab
Technician). The project could not be completed without their assistance, especially
fabrication would be a difficult task for us.

At the outset, we are really obligated to our parents without whom we would never have
been able to reach at this level. Their hard work and continuous support have enabled us
to complete this project smoothly.
ABSTRACT

Nontraditional manufacturing (NTM) involves nontraditional transport phenomena and

often nontraditional media. . Laser cutting is a technology based on the phenomenon of
NTM that uses a laser to cut materials and is typically used for industrial manufacturing
applications. The material is either melts, burns, vaporizes or is blown away by a jet of gas
leaving an edge with a high-quality surface finish.

In our project, Development of laser based Manufacturing system, we develop a 2-axis

CNC Laser machine in which we use CO2 laser tube which generates laser beam that is
reflected by mirrors and finally enters in the laser head where it is converged by a convex
lens and falls upon the workpiece and performs the cutting operation.

The machine operation is controlled by the Siemens controller which takes input power
from the power supply and delivers signals to the laser tube and motors mounted on the
pantograph.

During the first phase, we checked the feasibility of our project. For this, we touched both
the international as well as local markets about the availability of components of the
machine. After getting the positive feedback we initiated our project which gone very well
and finally we assembled all components and the machine is found to be working as per
expectation.
NTM (Non Traditional Manufacturing) processes
can be broad
ly categorized according to: (1) processes
in which there is a nontraditional mechanism of
interaction between the tool and the workpiece, and (2)
processes in which nontraditional media are used to
effect the transfer of energy from the tool to the
workpi
ece. In contrast, traditional machining relies on
direct mechanical contact between the tool and
workpiece, which often cause undesired changes in the
properties of workpiece, such as residual mechanical
and thermal stresses [1].
Rising production cost
s dictates that production
operations be automated whenever possible; innovative
materials such as super
-
alloys, composites, ceramics and
many other advanced materials, which are difficult to or
cannot be processed by traditional machining methods,
require
new manufacturing technologies; environmental
considerations require the development of
environmentally conscious processes. NTM processes
are often well suited to be monitored and controlled, and
the processing steps can be reduced while the precision
r
emains high
