Teacher Observation Reflection Form

(Teacher from same grade level)

Teacher Candidate for Science Endorsement: Jodi Wilder

Teacher Initials: CV

School: Big Shanty Intermediate Grade: 5th

Lesson Topic: Electrical Currents- S5P2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information
to investigate electricity.

 Plan and carry out investigations on common materials to determine if they are
insulators or conductors of electricity.

Write a brief summary of your experiences observing this lesson, addressing the
following questions:

In your opinion, what went well? What could be tweaked/improved? (Cite specific
examples. You can note specific things such as differentiation if it occurred, use of
technology, inquiry-based, etc).

What went well:

 Teacher used the Promethean board to display insulators and conductors and
after the investigations, the students were able to manipulate the words to
categorize them based on their findings
 Teacher gave explicit and clear directions as well as modeled expectations before
the students could gather materials to begin group work
 Students had clear roles for the group work and these established roles helped
prevent any confusion or arguments within the groups
 Materials were labeled and available for the investigations in separate tubs

Areas for improvement:

 The class needed more time to complete the experiments in order for a closing
activity to take place
 Due to lack of time two of the groups were not able to share their findings

How well were the lesson’s student performance objectives attained?

 Although the class ran out of time for the closing discussion, objectives were
attained in the groups. Each group was able to sort insulators and conductors
after testing them with the circuits. Each student was able to complete the chart
individually to show materials tested and whether they were conductors or
insulators. Each student was able to clearly state their predictions, evidence and
reasons for determining the items to be insulators or conductors.

Other reflections about the lesson?

 The teacher had clearly had the class work in groups many times with the same
clear roles because the students knew exactly what job they had in their group
and worked well together. With established procedures for group work the
investigations went smoothly.
