Lesson Reflective Summary

Teacher Candidate for Science Endorsement: Jodi Wilder

Instructor: Terri George

School: Big Shanty Grade: 5

Lesson Topic: Watershed Wonders Day 2-Nature Trail

Write a brief summary of your experiences teaching this lesson, addressing the following
questions:

 What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)
Students were engaged in observations about erosion and other parts of the nature
trail and creek. The lesson was a good way for the students to use their prior
knowledge about erosion to observe a real-world problem on the school campus.
Due to various behavior issues, the walk to the creek was more challenging. Some
students did not take the lesson seriously and thought it was play time in the
woods.

 How well were the lesson’s student performance objectives attained?

For the students who took the lesson seriously, they attained the performance
objectives when observing the nature trail and creek. They took pictures and
wrote notes of their observations and some of the students started thinking of
solutions for the erosion problem.

 Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry, and sense-

making by all students?
The lesson was focused on applying their science understanding of the water
cycle and erosion and accessing prior knowledge from lessons on constructive
and destructive forces. Inquiry was exhibited when the students questioned and
shared what they observed in the nature trail environment.

 Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support students’

construction of knowledge and understanding of important scientific concepts
and processes?
With my knowledge and active way of walking the students to the nature trail
and creek, students were able to construct a better understanding of the
scientific concepts involved in erosion and deposition seen on the nature trail
and near the creek.
 When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will you do
differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.) to improve student
learning for all students?
When I re-teach this lesson, I would spend more time discussing the constructive
and destructive key vocabulary for better understanding of what the students
would see on the trail. I would explore simple investigations to display how
erosion and deposition occur in nature.
