Flying Saucers and Alien Abductions:

What’s a Christian to Think?

A paper for Crossroads Evangelical Ministries written by
Lou Whitworth

I. INTRODOCTION

Over 15 million Americans claim to have seen a UFO. Worldwide there are a hundred sightings a day.
There is a close encounter of the third kind (sighting a UFO and its occupants) somewhere every day
in addition to all the close encounters of the first (seeing a UFO at 500 feet of less) and second kind
(physical evidence left by a UFO). Some of these sightings were multiple-witness sightings,
occasionally involving thousands of witnesses to one event. Ninety percent of those who claim to
have witnessed a UFO never report their sightings.1 Three percent of Americans claim to have been
abducted by aliens! (An encounter of the fourth kind.)2 Some of these figures are several years old
and doubtless the numbers have gone up, yet even so they testify that something important is going
on, something very deceptive and dangerous. The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on the
dangers associated with alien contact and speculate concerning why some of these things may be
happening.

A. Several recent articles and books have tried to identify the nature and spiritually deceptive
qualities of alleged UFO and alien activity. Though many of these accounts are frauds,
hallucinations, dreams, normal aircraft mistaken for UFOs, etc., some others are not explainable
by natural means. For that reason, several Christian authors are suggesting demonic involvement
as a possible way to understand these encounters.

B. I agree, and in this briefing outline I take the investigation one step further by following these
ideas out to their logical conclusions. This discussion is designed to answer this question, AIf
these strange events (UFO sightings and alien encounters) are really occurring, why are they
happening and what could be the purpose behind them?@

C. For the sake of this discussion, I assumed that these events, or other incidents very much like
them, have happened and are still happening. This was my starting point. I cannot validate that
any of these events have taken place; all we can do, short of having a personal experience or other
direct evidence, is sort through the materials and measure them against the biblical record.

D. There have been accounts of UFOs for thousands of years, but it was in the late 1940s that our
current phase of interest began. Today we are aided in our search for the truth about UFOs by a
rich assortment of events and experiences and by the perspective of fifty years of investigation. It
is now possible, for example, to see patterns not readily apparent in earlier years.

E. It seems likely that Satan and his fallen angels may be somehow involved in UFO sightings and
alien encounters and are involved in deceiving the spiritually naive. A growing number of
evangelicals now seem to agree.

F. What is not so obvious is that there may be a deeper and even more sinister level of demonic

1
involvement in this area. A few Christian writers are now suggesting that the whole alien/UFO
scenario may have great eschatological (prophetic) significance. That is, it may change the way
you see some end-time events. Intrigued? Then please read on. But, please remember, we=re
simply trying to inform you and warn you based on the information in these books. Some of this
material may be very disturbing, but if any of this does come to pass, you=ll hope that your
unsaved loved ones got disturbed enough to find out the truth and come to faith in Christ. Please
withhold judgment until you have read the entire paperCand checked the Scriptures themselves.

[Usage note: In UFO literature, all human-like beings (humanoids) not from earth are extraterrestrials
whether Satan, the fallen angels, the good angels, the Lord Jesus Christ, false new age Christs, spirits
of all kinds, etc. The terms Aalien@ and Aextraterrestrial@ and AET@ are often used interchangeably.]

2. SHOCKING NUMBERS OF PEOPLE CLAIM

TO HAVE BEEN ABDUCTED BY ALIENS.

The first accounts of alien abductions in the U.S. trickled in during the late forties and early fifties.
Those involved were ridiculed as mentally deranged or scorned as shameless fakers. The numbers
increased over the years to the point that estimates of abductees run into the hundreds of thousands in
the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. Some polls indicate 3% of Americans believe they have
been abducted by aliens.3 What are we to make of all this?

3. AN OVERVIEW OF HUMAN ABDUCTION BY ALIENS.

The AbductionCUsually the episode begins with the abductees at home in bed asleep or driving in a
car late at night. If they are driving, they will usually see strange lights or actually see a UFO, and
many times, they will feel drawn to the landing site. At this point there is often a temporary mental
Ablackout@ for about two-thirds of the contactees. Often these people will claim later that they are
Amissing@ several hours of time from their memory. In these cases hypnotic regression is the only
way to determine what happened during the blackout phase because spontaneous recall of activities on
board an alien craft are very rare. If the encounter begins while the abductees are sleeping, the first
things they notice are a bright light and a humming sound coming from outside. Next, they encounter
short (3-5 feet), hairless humanoids with gray-colored skin and experience a deepening paralysis and
the sensation of floating out a window (or through the wall or roof) towards the waiting UFO.4

Inside the Alien CraftCWhen they find themselves inside the craft, the abductees almost universally
undergo very thorough physical examinations. Also, special emphasis is placed on examining the
abdominal area of females and the genitalia of both sexes. Women often have ovum removed for what
they are told are reproductive purposes. Men frequently have sperm harvested for the same
reasons. Occasionally, abductees are told that these removals are for various reproductive procedures
and for producing hybrid offspring, that is, half-human, half-alien children. Actual sexual inter-course
is reported in only a small percentage of these encounters. Many abductees claim that small metal or
ceramic implants (1B3 mm) are left in their nasal cavities, in their skulls, or in other parts of their
bodies. Apparently, some of these implants have been surgically removed, but there is no proof that
they have an alien source, nor is their purpose known.5

The Alien Message to HumanityCRoutine communication by aliens to humans is largely accomplished

telepathically. Another common element in these encounters is the presentation to the abductee of
long detailed messages on large screens inside the craft. These communications usually warn of

2
cataclysmic events and destruction coming upon the earth. Sometimes the information is blatantly
religious, claiming (1) that we humans were created by the aliens, (2) that the aliens are trying to
promote us along the road of evolution by their hybrid breeding program, and (3) that mankind must
unite, through alien supervision, into a one-world government and a one-world religion in order to
survive.6

4. AFTEREFFECTS OF ALIEN ABDUCTION

The personal reactions of victims after alien abduction or extensive alien contact point out the
demonic nature of these extraterrestrial visitors. Abductees often have trouble sleeping, experience
headaches and restlessness, and many have feelings of fear, dread, or hopelessness, and other
psychological symptoms that can last for decades. On the other hand, a minority of the victims
experience deep joy and a sense of being Ahome@ while on the craft. Some abductees state that they
feel Achosen@ for some great purpose and become evangelists faithfully sharing the message of the
aliens. There is also the unaccountable loss of time, and after abduction the victim=s speech patterns
are often altered and a robot-like voice is soon evident. The voice seems to come from deep inside the
person, and there are noticeable pauses in response to questions. The person often appears to be
controlled, or some would say, possessed.7 Many get deeper and deeper into the occult. The old
expression goes, ACuriosity killed the cat.@ When it comes to the occult, in general, and UFOs, in
particular, untempered curiosity and a lack of spiritual discernment can be fatal to humansCboth
physically and spiritually.8

5. A PROFILE OF ALIEN ABDUCTEES

A 1993 study of people who had simply reported seeing UFOs revealed no psychological
abnormalities. In fact, their psychological health was judged superior to some of the comparison
groups. Among those who claim to have been abducted, however, the presence of certain
characteristics is noteworthy, though no specific type of personality stands out. AAbductee surveys
have revealed that the overwhelming majority of abductees have shown an interest in paranormal
activities, Eastern religions, and [the] New Age world-view.@9 Other common characteristics of
abductees are other abductees in the family, a marked openness to new and unusual experiences, a
highly dysfunctional family background, and victimization by sexual abuse as children. Some
abductees, but not all, have had several UFO sightings prior to their abduction. The fact that very few
born-again Christians show up among abductees is instructive.10

6. THE INITIAL PURPOSE OF ALIEN ABDUCTIONS

In warfare soldiers often Asoften up@ an area with artillery ahead of the invasion forces. Or, they may
send in covert teams to clear obstacles, stash equipment, or plant various pre-set devices. These
measures are designed to lower the cost of the invasion and make it go smoothly. According to the
authors of the books referenced in this paper, the initial purpose of the last forty to fifty years of UFO
sightings, abductions, and Amessages,@ has been to prepare earthlings for the arrival of the aliens, to
make their arrival and deceitful plans less frightening and more palatable to the people of earth.
These efforts have been largely successful.

7. THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF THE ALIEN AGENDA

3
The ultimate goal of the aliens is to deceive and mislead as many people as possible in order to keep
people from coming to saving faith in Jesus Christ. Step one in this process is creating a favorable
climate for their ideas and presence. This is done through abductions and their messages to humanity.
And, for a variety of reasons, popular entertainment, has helped advance the idea of extraterrestrials
coming to earth to help mankind avoid disasters, nuclear war, and environmental calamity, etc.

Another step in their plan is counterfeiting biblical events. The aliens apparently have a plan to
counterfeit both the Rapture of the Church and the Second Coming of Christ. Though some Christians
see these as occurring simultaneously, others see them as separate events. In this paper we will
explore how the aliens plan to counterfeit the Rapture. (In a later paper we will deal with the hybrid
breeding program and the counterfeiting of the Second Coming.) The term rapture is not in the
original Greek nor in the English versions of the Bible, but is from the Latin meaning Acaught up.@
The term refers to Christ=s return in the air (as distinguished from His Second Coming to the earth)
for believers, both living and dead, who are Acaught up@ to be with Him. It is also called the ABlessed
Hope@ because proponents of this theory believe this event will allow them to be in heaven with
Christ while the people on earth go though horrible judgments. One of the main goals of the
extraterrestrials is to confuse people about the Rapture and explain it away by putting forth a scenario
that seems similar yet is drastically different. Please read carefully these two passages from the New
Testament.

13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep [have died],
that you may not grieve, as do the rest who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and
rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep [have died] in Jesus. 15
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, and remain until the coming
of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend
from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the
dead in Christ shall rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together
with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18
Therefore comfort one another with these words (1 Thess. 4:12B18).

Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in
the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead will be
raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable,
and this mortal must put on immortality (1 Cor. 15:51B53).

Now read this passage from the book Project World Evacuation written in 1993.

The Great Evacuation will come upon the world very suddenly. The flash of emergency events
will be as a lightning that flashes in the sky. So sudden and so quick in its happening that it is over
almost before you are aware if its presence. . . . Our rescue ships will be able to come in close
enough in the twinkling of an eye to set the lifting beams in operation in a moment. And all over
the globe where events warrant it, this will be the method of evacuation. Mankind will be lifted,
levitated shall we say, by the beams from our smaller ships. These smaller craft will in turn taxi
the persons to the larger ships overhead, higher in the atmosphere, where there is ample space and
quarters and supplies for millions of people. (The italics are mine; they mark phrases quoted or
paraphrased from the Bible.)11
The alleged source of this material tells us a great deal. It was apparently channeled from a

4
extraterrestrial named Ashtar, leader of the Ashtar Command, a very powerful being and a prominent
name in UFO circles.12 This name is also familiar to readers of the Old Testament, though the gender
is different. Ashtar (also Ashtaroth or Ashtoreth) was the name of a Canaanite goddess of fertility.
The Canaanites= vile, licentious worship of Ashtar provoked God=s wrath and led Him to demand
their extermination by the Israelites.13 In his communique Ashtar said his purpose was to save the
earth from the same fate that blew to bits the planet Lucifer (note that name).14 Of course, Lucifer is
the angelic name of Satan. It=s not coincidence that certain names just keep popping up.

According to aliens the reason for evacuating people from earth is to save them from the catastrophic
earth changes that are coming. AEarth changes, the ETs have insisted, are caused by the presence of
pollution within the body of Mother Earth. And like a living organism with an infection, Mother Earth
needs to cleanse herself of the pollution as well as the >dark forces= who no longer fit in....The dark
forces are a group of individuals whose thought patterns are of the past.@15 They are holding back the
earth and keeping the forces of light from evolving to the higher state of consciousness.16 The Adark
forces@ are Christians who must be removed because their thinking is of the past; that is, they refuse
to obey the demonically inspired teachings of the aliens. The evil forces are even prepared for
questions about those who will be taken away.

Many of these beings who are leaving this planet at this time have completed that which they
came to do. It is a time of great rejoicing for them. Do not feel sad about their leaving. They are
going home. Many are waiting to be with them again. . . . Many beings must move on, for their
thought patterns are of the past. They hold on to these thoughts that keep Earth held back. 17

Remember that though this makes a good story, in actuality this event is the Rapture and God is in
control, not the aliens/demons. They are ultimately doomed, but they will deceive many with their
clever cover story of UFO evacuation and Mother Earth cleansing herself. This deception is one of
their last desperate acts.

8. SUMMARY/CONCLUSION

According to many well-known Christian writers and Bible teachers, Satan and his fallen angels are
operating under the cover of visitors from outer space (extraterrestrials from other planets or as aliens
in UFOs) in their latest assault on humanity. Just as there was an explosion of demonic activity when
Christ was on earth, many Bible scholars expect another eruption of demonic activity during the last
days before He returns. This may be that time or the beginning of it. At some point Satan will be
thrown to earth and will realize that his time is short (Rev. 12:7B12). If this is that time or near to that
time, then however you breakdown prophetic events, the Rapture and the Second Coming are getting
very close. A Christian writer who has investigated UFOs for many years writes that he knows of no
case in which the message of an extraterrestrial has met the conditions in 1 John 4:1B3. That passage
commands us to test the spirits to see whether they acknowledge that Jesus Christ has come in the
flesh and is from God.18 We must warn everyone we know to Ahave nothing to do with the fruitless
deeds of darkness, but rather expose them@ (Eph. 5:11). In this paper we have tried to unmask the
mysterious deeds attributed to extraterrestrials and aliens and expose them as more treachery by the
enemy of our souls, Satan and his fallen angels. They are using a different approach and some new
disguises, but it=s the same age-old deception.
