WHY THIS BOOK

The answer to this question is quite simple , because more and more amateurs are involved in leading of worship and
raising worshipers in churches around. By amateurs I mean, of course those who have not been trained, or discipled. The
worship ministry and team is a very sensitive ministry, not because others are not important or sensitive, but this particular
ministry is so important that you can't ignore it . one of the greatest obstacles to seeing the demonstration of the
supernatural power of God that I have found in the diverse places around the world is that a spiritual atmosphere does not
exist for the Glory of God to manifest. And a hard spiritual atmosphere may be the result of poor praise and worship or
lack of a consecrated worship team. When people are not worshiping God in spirit and in truth on a continuous basis they
are not able to create the environment to bring His Presence. Worship is more that a declaration, it is a sincere attitude of
humility, reverence, respect and fear of the lord, in our worship Jesus must be crowned. He must occupy the throne of our
lives- Holy of Holies within us. We know that Faith is a muscle that grows when exercised. Worship works in a similar
way; there is always room to go deeper in it.
Worship may also be expressed by physical posture, such as bowing the head or body, kneeling or falling prostate before
God. If we worship in sincere and humble way, it becomes something that goes well beyond singing or talking to God, it
becomes an attitude that can be expressed even through physical contact with others, such as an embrace, through which
we transmit everything that flows out of our relationship of worship with the father.

The level of worship in a church determines its level of revelation and manifestation of the glory of
God

True worship focuses on God and not self , and we cannot fake worship or communion with God

God is releasing a new sound on earth, and it will take a worship team that is completely sold out to God, committed,
consecrated and focused to access it. Each time a new sound overflows in church, the atmosphere changes and old
structure are broken.
Through worship demonic strongholds can be broken. The anointed human voice is powerful! When we emit heaven
inspired sound in the spirit, with our delegated authority from Jesus . ( Luke ch 10:17-19 ; Matthew 28:18) .
Some people believe they enter into the presence of God according to the number of songs they sing. But let me tell you.
Regardless of how many songs we sing, if they are not of the spirit, God will be grieved, and nothing will happen, in my
experience , a song given by the holy spirit can be sufficient to enter into his glory and this does not depend on our
condition before entering the service . for instance in 2017 we visited University of Nigeria Nsukka for a night of worship,
as the worship was going on I started hearing a song from afar , different from what we were singing , all of a sudden I
stopped the one we were singing because at that point I knew the songs I was hearing was from heaven I started singing
that song , oh my God, the atmosphere changed, the glory came down, people started falling under the power of God , even
some of my back up singers couldn't stand anymore . the weight of the glory was too much, but this happened because I
was sensitive enough to hear and discern. So a worship team that is not trained and equipped cannot create a smooth
atmosphere for the people to worship , and a church or an atmosphere without worship creates dead results. This little
book is to equip you an your team to know the right thing to do .
I have seen diverse miracles and turn around in a place of worship. And may you encounter God as you read this book in
Jesus name .Amen

WHY THIS BOOK
Worship reminds us of Gods power, Does God need our worship? This may surprise you, but the answer is no! Worship is not a
massaging of Gods heavenly ego. Praise is not a pampering of Gods insecurities. Worship is unto God, but for man's benefit. We
have heard a lot about God creating man for fellowship. The only problem with the concept is that it's not primary in scripture.
God enjoys fellowship with man, but He made him for rulership ( Gen 1:6-29) to be steward over Gods handiwork. Worship
allows man to remain in a position of submission and thereby enhance his authority.
Worship opens door for incredible events in the heavenly realm. If God dwells in the praises of His people , then worship is
obviously a necessary ingredient for His miraculous presence.
A lot of people worship all sorts of things, people, in places as diverse as wembley stadium and mosques. Is there anything
distinctive about Christian worship? (Exodus ch 33:1-3, 12-17)
The background to this is the golden calf incident, after which God was angry that he would no longer go with the people on their
journey, but would only send an angel instead. (vv1-3) . Note the people's distress as this (vs4) , and Moses' intercession . The key
verses are vv.16-17: if the presence of God is not with this people, how will anyone know they are special and different from every
other worshiping community ?
The distinctive thing about the worship of the living God is that He is present with His people, and can be encountered in that
worship. The presence of Jesus on earth physically, and His gift of the Holy spirit, is the Christian continuation of the old
testament understanding of the presence of God. But it is now enriched because the Jesus who became human is now in heaven,
The main aim of leading worship is to help people towards experiencing God and having an encounter with Him.
This is a small handbook, to guide you and equip you to know how you can effectively raise your worship team .

If you're like many worship leaders, especially those employed full-time to serve the church, you may have plenty of time and
freedom to pick songs, rehearse with your team, and do all the things required to be prepared for Sunday. It's a good thing!
But there is a danger, because there's always a danger, and the danger is that idleness, intended or not, can go easily undetected and
unnoticed.
There's a reason why there's a ring of truth to the often-heard cliche: "What does he/she do all week? Don't they just pick four
songs?" You may only have to pick four songs every week to keep your boss satisfied and your congregation singing, but there's so
much more you actually can, should, and need to do to maintain your integrity as someone who has been called to sing Psalms,
hymns, and spiritual songs to the people God has called to worship Him in grace and truth.
I want to encourage the work of worship leaders/pastors who might find that the ease, in which they can facilitate their tasks has
led them to becoming bored, uninterested, and lethargic. In no particular order, here are eight ways to maintain your integrity as a
worship leader, and avoid the temptation to phone it in:

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR WORSHIP TEAM

1. Learn new songs consistently. Commit yourself to building a solid repertoire of songs that
cover the full range between adoration, confession, and thanksgiving. Learning new songs keeps
your mind fresh, your team sharp, and your chops challenged. There's a lot of music out there, so
spend time exploring songs that are not only tuneful, but communicate a rich theology that speaks
clearly to the wonder, grace1. and mercy of God and our humble response to Him. If you happen to
be a songwriter, write new songs! Learning and writing new songs creates air in your soul that can
be a springboard for creativity in all other facets of your ministry.

2. Teach new songs appropriately. You probably shouldn't introduce a new songs every week,
unless you want people whispering during worship with half-mumbled gasps of air every Sunday.
Use discernment for whatever is appropriate to your congregation and introduce accordingly. A
younger church or a church plant may be open to learning new songs more frequently, whereas an
older congregation might need a bit more pacing. Regardless of how often you introduce new songs,
make sure you teach your people what they're about, why you're singing them, and remind them that
learning new songs are important for the life and vitality of the church body.

3. Alter arrangements tactfully. Sometimes overplayed songs can become fresh again if you
make subtle edits to the arrangement. Small changes like starting with the chorus, ending on a verse,
dropping a section to voices only, introducing a solo, etc., can inject new life into something that
people have sung a thousand times. Like everything, use good discernment, because you're not
trying to make songs people already love and appreciate more difficult to sing, but to make them
difficult to ignore after years of repetition.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR WORSHIP TEAM

PRAY WITH YOUR TEAM CONSTANTLY

I am not talking about a token of prayer before first service, I am talking about creating a culture of prayer
within your team, put down the instruments , gather as a group and spend time in prayer every week so
that you all remember that you are not there to perform but to proclaim the excellencies of God. There is
only one person who is on the platform as much as you and that is the lead pastor. Prepare your heart to
withstand the challenges and temptations that come with being on a platform and leading a people from it.
Prayer ! this is one major aspect of ministry and our walk with God that if neglected, you will live in pain and
struggles , it requires everything about you, total surrender, the Christian life Is a life of total surrender if it's
not a life of total surrender then , it's not a Christian life.

''Ist kings ch 20 Now Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings
with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria and attacked it. He sent messengers into
2

the city to Ahab king of Israel, saying, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: 'Your silver and gold are mine, and
3

the best of your wives and children are mine.'”

4
The king of Israel answered, “Just as you say, my lord the king. I and all I have are yours.”
5
The messengers came again and said, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: 'I sent to demand your silver and
gold, your wives and your children. But about this time tomorrow I am going to send my officials to search
6

your palace and the houses of your officials. They will seize everything you value and carry it away.'”

Ahab a wicked king surrendered to beh-adad and said all i have is yours, in total surrender to the king, but
God will not force you to surrender, all God wants from you is to make up your mind and surrender , to
draw near, men of prayer birth new things, any man or woman addicted to prayer will always give birth to
new things , your altar of prayer as a team must be strong, prayer births power, if you are too busy to pray
then you are too busy for the anointing and power, and you will watch the devil feast on your life and
ministry, the devil is not afraid of your title, achievements or whatever, He is afraid when you get on your
knees and call on God,

''Act ch 12:1-5 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
2
And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
3
And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of
unleavened bread.)
4
And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of
soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
5
Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.''

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR WORSHIP TEAM

James the beloved, the powerful man, was destroyed and killed by Herod . If the brethren did not pray ,peter
would have been destroyed by Herod also , and his ministry gone and forgotten, so many have lost their ministries
at the place of prayerlessness, a prayer less man is a powerless man, God is giving out new songs each day , but
are you willing to stay in His presence to receive. I take my team on a journey of prayer every year most times we
spend 21 days fasting and praying every quarter. We spend 1 night every week praying for the ministry and for
ourselves. And we have recorded diverse miracles and blessings.
We have seen countless miracles as we move by Gods divine instructions from the place of prayer, for instance in
2013, God instructed me to move to the sport hall at the stadium, at that point there was no money to sponsor the
meeting , and we spent 7 days praying, the last day someone called and handed me over the exact amount of
money we asked God for, and even more, also I was away in Zambia and the spirit of God said when you get to
Enugu walk around strategic points in the city anoint and declare words, so that season we spent 3 days on the
mountain praying , the 3rd day of the prayer we stepped down, visited strategic junctions and prayed , the most
significant one was a place called otigba junction, this place was a den of prostitutes and all form of evil you can
think of , we stood there anointed it and prayed, in few months the governor came and drove all of them out , that
place is being sanitized even as you read. There is no way we can do all these things if we don't spend time in
prayer. A lot of people do things because they feel good about it and that's why they struggle so much and still
achieve less, in 2013, God asked me to go on a campus tour, which I obeyed , the 1st meeting we had about 200
people in attendance , I continued because I knew what God told me, as at last year we recorded over 4000 young
people gathered together inside the convocation arena of university of Nigeria Nsukka, yes God sent me, someone
else might go and copy the same concept and fail completely , find out God's plan for your ministry and fall in line
with it , don't do things because someone else did . How strong is you're altar? Worship leader, worship team how
strong? How strong is your relationship with God ? How much of God do you carry ? lead you team to the place
of prayer, take territories, states , kingdoms on your knees , there is an art that everyone needs to learn, the art of
being alone with God.
Get on your knees now and talk to God before you read on. Ask God to intensify your hunger for Him. Pray!

Oh God, intensify my hunger for you, my hunger for prayer, my hunger for the secret place .

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR WORSHIP TEAM

STUDY GOD'S WORD DILIGENTLY

Please do your best to push against the stereotype of worship arts being the least theologically driven ministry in
the church , spend time reading , meditating and reflecting on God's word with the understanding that God cares
deeply about preparing your heart to lead other hearts in singing His words back to Him on Sunday. As a worship
leader or as a team you cannot survive without Gods word, except you are not a worship team, worship is beyond
music, that established, knowing God and knowing more about Him you must study the word. God said to Joshua

''Joshua ch 1vs8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do
everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful''

For him to succeed an option and command was attached to it, mediate, study ,
We see also Apostle Paul writting to timothy he said
nd
''2 timothy ch 2:15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the
word of truth.''

You cannot give what you don't have, you can't sing about a God you don't know. You cannot tell about a God you
have not encountered .David was a man of His presence , no wonder He achieved so much, as a worship leader or a
worship team the word of God is the bedrock of your ministry , not tapes or cd's , those are Good, I am not trying
to condemn them , I listen to tape also, but your primary duty is to hear from God and then pass across what you
heard to the people you are leading, every year I go through the bible at least once , this year my team is on a
journey of studying the whole bible, ''psalm 119:105Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path''
People write and sing vague songs in our generation because they lack the word, you can't be a word addict and fail,
'' your word is a lamp'' which means without His words you are walking in darkness already, the word of God is the
master key of life. The word of God is everything . study it meditate on it, create time for it, live it . May God give
you the grace to study in Jesus name.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR WORSHIP TEAM
Connect with your people faithfully.
Your job isn't to simply have a band ready to perform on Sunday. Whatever your title or job
description at your church, you need to know the people who are serving alongside of you. Musicians
play better together the better friends they are. So reach into their lives, pastor their souls, cultivate
friendships, and be more than just "the lead guy or gal" to them. It's not just about how they play on
Sunday, but how they live throughout the week that will affect how they play on Sunday. Care for their
hearts first.

Read worship and non-worship books voraciously.

Seriously, spend less time with your face planted in Sweetwater catalogs and more time reading books
by men and women from whom you can gain wisdom. But don't let it end with you. Give good books
to your team to read; let them learn what you're learning. Become a theologically-driven worship team
that is constantly reminded that you are musicians second.

Lead your team through your liturgy weekly.

This can happen during your prayer time, but make sure you're teaching your team. Whatever your
liturgy looks like, lead them through the thought and intent behind it. Show them that there's more
intentionality to the services than simply selecting four songs in the right key, and if there's not, this is
a great time to begin adding that kind of depth.
HOW TO SAY NO TO SOMEONE WHO IS
NOT READY FOR THE WORSHIP TEAM

There is going to be someone who wants to join your worship team who isn't the right fit. Maybe they're not skilled
musically. Maybe they aren't in it for the right reasons. Whatever it is - there will be a time when you have to say "no."

Here's how to say no to someone who isn't a good fit for the worship team:

GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO WORK ON

You should really exhaust all possibilities when it comes to adding people to the team. Try everything you can to set
them up for success but stick to your standards. The answer is not often a straight up "no" - it is usually a "not yet."
There's a big difference.

When they audition for the team give them feedback. If a person is not ready, let them know what they need to work
on. It's not fair to just say "no" to someone. Give them a reason so they have the opportunity to improve.

SCHEDULE A FOLLOW UP

Give them two weeks to work on what you've discussed. Set up another time to meet and listen specifically for the
things you previously discussed. Have they fixed their flat harmonies? Is their timing better?

If they are still not ready, let them know they are still struggling with certain areas. Identify those areas and set up one
more meeting.

SHOW THEM ANOTHER WAY THEY CAN SERVE

If they bomb the final meeting, it's time to start thinking about saying "no." The key to saying no is giving them
another opportunity to serve. It's hard to say no to someone in a church setting because you feel like you are
effectively saying "you can't serve the church." But that's not true. God has gifted everyone in some way to use their
talents for the church. Some people are just confused about what their talents are. So give a firm "no." Then add a
"but."

"I'm sorry, I still don't think you are quite ready to join the worship team... but I've identified some other
areas where you are gifted." Providing an alternative lets them know they are still valuable to the church.

HOW TO GROW YOUR TEAM

When it comes to building your team, the truth is: your team will only grow as large as your current
system allows.
If your system is not set up to handle 15 people, you may hit that number but you will quickly shrink
back to what your current system can handle.
If you want your team to grow, you've got to be ready for the growth.

Here are 3 steps you can take to provide the structure for growth:

IDENTIFY WHERE YOU’RE AT

First, you've got to identify where you're currently at. How many people are on your team? How many
people can the system you have in place effectively handle? If you're by yourself, you operate
differently than if you have 5 people on your team. Identify what your current system looks like then
move onto the next step.

IDENTIFY YOUR NEXT LEVEL

Where do you want to go next? You need to take small steps if you want to grow sustainably. Now that
you've identified where you're currently at - ask yourself the question: what's next?
If you're the only one leading worship, what would your process look like for having 5 people leading
with you? If you've got 5 people on your team, what would having 10 people look like

3 REVIEW
Finally, rinse and repeat. As more people join your team, you'll need to reevaluate what your system
looks like. Return to step one and repeat the steps.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHENPLANNING A WORSHIP SET

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are a lot of things to think about when planning a worship set. Here are three things to
consider:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
SONG KEYS
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some people spend all their time just on this point. They try to match up keys across songs so one song
flows perfectly into the next. There's nothing wrong with focusing energy on this but it can be taken to the
extreme.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yes. Songs should be put in complimentary keys when possible - it's much easier to transition from a song in
the key of E to a song in the key of A than it is to transition from A to Bb. But don't let the fact that
complimentary keys sound better limit you in your preparation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I recommend putting together a rough list of songs without worrying about the keys. Then, try to match the
keys up as best you can. Don't let key choice limit your song choice. It's much better to sing songs that
people need to sing than to have songs arranged just for the sake of flow.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
THEMES ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Song themes are also important when creating a worship set. It's more powerful to focus in on a single
aspect of God's character than to try to hit every single one.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Line up songs so they highlight a specific theme - God's love, God's grace, God's sovereignty, Jesus' work on
the cross. This allows you to hone in on and speak directly to a characteristic of who God is.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
SUPPORT THE MESSAGE ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your song choice should always support your pastor's vision for the gathering.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most obviously the song coming out of the message should be a direct response to where your pastor led
the church. If they talked about trusting God, give people a chance to respond to that by singing a song
about trusting God more.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Perhaps less thought about are songs leading up to the message. They should introduce the topic your
pastor is preaching on. That way the people have already stepped into the topic for the morning and are
prepared to learn about it.

NON-MUSICAL WAYS TO LEAD PEOPLE IN WORSHIP

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Worship leaders, we know worship is more than music so let's prove it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are 3 non-musical ways you can lead your church in worship:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Worship, Is simply an expression of reverence and adoration, it means to revere to honor to glorify, when you worship God
what it simply means is that you are honoring him, you are adoring him. It is far beyond the songs , it is a lifestyle, the life we
live, daily , our communication with people, our relationship even at the place of your work, is an act of worship. “I always say
that you sing so well, doesn't make you a better worshiper than the janitor that cleans the church, your simple act of love and
obedience is an act of worship too. For instance Abraham understood who God is. He has a close intimate relationship with God,
that propelled him to worship, ( Genesis ch 12:8 )and the greatest truth about worship is that genuine worship doesn't just lift God
alone, it also lift the worshiper .
If you read the bible from the book of genesis ch 13 : 4, you will see clearly that Abraham, understood the importance of worship
that he can’t settle in a place without engaging in worship. Every time you raise an altar of worship to God He comes to dwell,

Worship is not just a service starter , we see a lot of that in the local churches today where , before a service starts , worship
session comes on first , worship is beyond this, you must engage in worship every day of the week and every week of the month
and all months of the year , it's a daily affair. .
We are created in God's image, and created to worship and reveal God,

Worship is also a command,

Jesus commanded us as believers and also as individuals to worship God the Father and worship only Him, people engage in
different kinds of worship. Whatever draws your utmost attention becomes your God, to some is their Job, money in the bank,
etc. but the right kind of worship is the worship of the most high God, only Him will you serve . in other words you are not
allowed to worship any other God except the most high God.

The big question is why do we worship? Worship is the most important aspect of our relationship with God, although the holy
spirit already dwells within you, you need to actively seek God and His glory through worship, we worship because God is our
all, he is the creator, God told the children of Israel you shall serve no other God except me (exodus ch 20:3) , therefore giving
your primary attention to anything that is not God is disobedience to God’s authority .
In our generation people mistake worship or call you a worshiper just because you can sing very well, but I can boldly tell you
that singing alone cannot make you a worshiper . if we worship God in a sincere and humble way it becomes something that goes
well beyond singing or talking to God, I am a testimony of how your life could be transformed in a place of worship, when you
live a life of worship , God pulls, he draws you and there is no way you will come close to God and not be transformed .

NON-MUSICAL WAYS TO LEAD PEOPLE IN WORSHIP

⠀⠀⠀ SCRIPTURE READING ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is an often overlooked element in our "time of worship." It's easy to think our responsibility is to lead
music and nothing else. But scripture is another way we can worship in a corporate setting. Try setting up a
song with a relevant scripture. Explain to your church that not only is singing worship, but reading,
understanding, and responding to scripture is an act of worship too.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
TIME OF PRAYER ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lastly, you can lead your church through a time of prayer. This is different than you simply praying out loud.
This enables people to respond to God on their own; deepening their relationship with him.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

For example, if you're singing How Great Is Our God, walk people through the process of praying directly to
God by saying something like: "Take a moment to tell God how he has been great in your life. Thank him for
the things that he's done.”

ENCOURAGE PEOPLE

Just because you have a great voice doesn’t mean people will join you. You need to invite them. All it takes
is a little encouragement. Throughout a worship set, I’ll give tons of vocal cues, encouraging people to lift
their voice. here are some of them:

“Let’s sing this together”

“Church, let’s rise up and declare this truth”
“Every voice, from the front to the back”
“That’s beautiful! Let’s sing it one more time”
I know this may feel awkward at times, but it doesn’t have to be. You aren’t performing songs. You are a
leader. Your church is waiting for you to lead them.

HOLD NOTHING BACK

I’ve got to say, there’s nothing more inspiring than a leader that puts their heart on display – a worship
leader that pursues God with everything they have. A true heart of worship connects the generations. A true
heart of worship is inviting and inspiring to a congregation.

Don’t be timid. Rise up and lead with boldness.

. PREPARE YOUR HEART

If your only preparation is in the musical realm, you are not becoming the worship leader you could be. Pray
for your congregation. Show up with expectancy. Talk to people before and after service.

You’re more of a waiter than you are a rockstar. Prepare your heart beforehand to serve people in their
encounter with God. It’s not about you and your leadership. It’s all about shining a spotlight on the glory of
God and getting out of the way.

Your church doesn’t care how talented you are. They don’t come to hear your amazing arrangements.

HOW TO INCORPORATE A NEW MEMBER INTO YOUR TEA

It's one thing to simply have someone start playing with your worship team. It's a whole other thing to
have them actually incorporated into the team.

Over the past few weeks, we've talked about how to build your team. Let's assume that you've started
that process and now you have these new people on your team and you have no idea what to do with
them.

Here are three tips for incorporating new members into your team:

SET EXPECTATIONS

The first thing you should do when someone joins your team is communicate expectations. Clearly
explain to them how things work in your team. When do they need to show up for practice? Is it right at
call time or should they be there earlier to set up?

Whether you realize it or not, there are expectations that are already set in your team. The people
currently on your worship team already subconsciously know them even if they haven't been
communicated (that's the CULTURE of your team by the way).

Make a list of expectations you need to communicate.

SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS

Give them the tools they need to succeed. Don't just have them join the team and then treat them like
the other members who have been on the team for years. There is a learning curve and you need to help
them navigate it.

Have one on one sessions with them to get them started. Provide them with musical examples of what
you want them to do. Make sure they have what they need to succeed in your team.

PROVIDE FEEDBACK

Feedback is important at all stages but particularly important when people first start out. That new
member is constantly evaluating themselves and asking "is this what my leader wants?"

HOW TO TRAIN UP WORSHIP LEADERS

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are some practical steps to make that happen:⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Teach them
Sit down with a new team member one on one and specifically teach them. If they are new to playing guitar, give them a
few guitar lessons. If they are a vocalist, work through vocal parts with them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you don't know how to play the instrument a new member wants to learn, find someone who does.⠀––⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Give them a song to lead -

Whatever instrument a person is playing, they can take the lead on a song. Whether that's a vocal part, a keyboard
driven song, or a guitar lead line - give them the responsibility. This allows them to take ownership of their spot on the
team.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let them lead worship in a "safe" environment -
Just because you've given someone a song to lead doesn't mean it has to be on a Sunday morning in front of your whole
church. Their journey should involve leading first in "safe" environments. A safe environment is a place where they can
make mistakes without fear.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The best place to start is at worship team rehearsals. Have this new member lead your worship team in worship. This
gives them a safe space to practice leading worship. Next, have them lead in a small group environment. After that, have
them lead alongside you on a Sunday morning.⠀⠀⠀
What are your "safe" environments where new leaders can lead worship? It could a worship session before rehearsal , or
before the meeting, i now my pastor gave me the opportunity to lead in worship during our leadership meeting , and
from there the church platform was released and it kept climbing.

Set them loose - Once they're ready -

once you've worked alongside them - it's time to set them loose. Give them their own song to lead on a Sunday
morning. Let them handle a transition. Start small and slowly give them more and more responsibility until they are able
to lead worship completely by themselves.⠀––⠀⠀⠀⠀

Teach them these steps -

Finally, teach them these 5 steps so that they can raise up even more worship leaders!

WAY TO BETTER ENGAGE YOUR CONGREGATION IN WORSHIP

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are three quick tips to help you better engage your congregation:⠀––⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

- EYES - OPEN YOUR EYES AND LOOK AT PEOPLE ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's easy to WORSHIP with your eyes closed. It's hard to LEAD WORSHIP with your eyes closed (READ THAT LINE
AGAIN)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you open your eyes it allows you to do two things: connect with people and gauge the room. There is
something powerful about making eye contact with someone and singing truth directly over them and with
them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Opening your eyes also allows you to gauge the room. You can see where people are at and lead them in the
right direction, navigate them around obstacles, and help them see the goodness of God.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
SMILE -
For some reason, our default face when leading worship is not a happy one. However, if we truly have the
greatest message ever to sing about then we have something to smile about.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Frown less, smile more.⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

EXPRESS -
Express what you're feeling when you worship. It's easy to get lost in trying to remember what chord comes
next or what words to sing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you really want to be able to express yourself in worship, it starts with preparation. The better prepared you
are the more easily you'll be able to express yourself because the songs will no longer be something you have
to remember but truth you get to sing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Once you're prepared appropriately, express what the song is about. If it's Glorious Day, believe it is a glorious
day and act appropriately. If you're singing Oceans, smile because you are trusting that God is with you as he
leads you into uncertain circumstances.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Expression is not performance. It's engaging the congregation by expressing the truth you're singing about.
