THE SCIENCE OF SEEING

Improved methods in the technique of Street Lighting
during the past 15 to 20 years have made modern
street lighting the application of "The Science of ffira
Seeing". Therefore, as in any other science, certain
fundamental laws and principles govem the design
and application of street lighting equipment. As a mt.7

The prime purpose of street lighting today is to pro- Fjs. 1

vide adequate visibility on the streets and highways l /
at night. This includes visibility that will enable the "n&&r
driver to see far enough ahead at all times, regardless 17%

The two main factors contributing to the ability to
see at night or "visibility distance" are (1) discern-
ment and (2) glare. In well planned street lighting,
discernment by silhouette or contrast and discern-

ment by surface detail are of paramount importance.
An object is discerned by silhouette or contrast when
the general level of brightness of all or a substantial
part of it is lower or higher than the brightness of its
background. Since pavement brightness is essential
to silhouette and contrast seeing, then payment
surface brightness is of utmost importance, see photo.
Discerrrment by sur{ace detail is seen by virtue of
variations in brightness or color of its own surface,
without regard to its background. This type of light-
ing is used on main business streets of large shopping
areas where.vision is limited to short distances. In
such areas sufficient illumination on both vertical
and horizontal surfaces is required to recoglize an
object, its direction of movement and its approxi-
mate speed.
The second factor contributing to "visibility distance"

mental to the vision of the motorist if it is not care

Discomlort glare is another factor which can seriously
hinder the vision of the motorist. It is produced by an
excessive contrast between the light source and its
background. Discomfort glare can be controlled in
the design ot the luminaire by selecting the proper
glassware or by shielding the light source. Revere
engineers also have minimized glare by designing the
reflector so that the light center of the source falls
well inside the reflector. By doing so, the filament is
shielded from the motorist's eyes at normal viewing
angles, and the "hot spot" encountered even with the
best difiusing glasswate is reduced.
Dry pavements usually difiuse incident light equally
in all directions regardless of the angle of incident
light. Therefore, it is easy to provide bright or light
pavements. However, on wet pavements the light is
reflected approximately at the same angle as the
incident angle. Hence, by using higher mounting
heights, the angle of incidence is minimized and the
light reflected into the motorist's eyes is of minimum
brightness. Also, the street lighting luminaires should
be mounted over the road directly in front of the
motorist so that a bright pave.ment is in front of the
car on both wet or dry roads.
Good street lighting practice requires that most of the
tight emitted from a luminaire be directed toward the
street. distributed to ensure maximum utilization, and
provide the I.E.S. recommended average illumination
for different densities of pedestrian and vehicular
tralfic. A combination oJ factors such as mounting
height, spacing and transverse location contribute to
the selection of the luminaire required for a specific
job. Also, an understanding of all existing conditions
including characteristics of street surface, types of
buildings along the street and the presence or absence
of trees is of importance in design. Your Revere rep-

TYPIJ t-Two way lateral light distribution having preferred lateral width
of 15 degrees on each side of the reference line with an acceptable range
of 10 degrees to less than 20 degrees in a vertical plane of maximum
candlepower parallel to the curb line. For mounting near the center of
the roadway, where the width of the roadway is approximately the same
as the mounting height.

TYPlr Il-Nauow asymmetric lighi distribution having preferred lateral

APPLICATION AND DESIGN DATA
The complete Star-Lux Luminaire consists of a prc-
cision die-cast aluminum head. including socket and
receptacle, and reflector-glassware :lssembly, includ-
ing reflector, deflector (where required ), glassware
holding ring, and glassware. A variety of combina
tions and arrangcments ol these components is oficred
to meet a wide range of application requirements.
Star-Lux Luminaire heads are available with or
without pre wired locking-type rece.ptacle for E.E.L-
NEMA standard plug-in photocontrol. lleads for
luminaires with r.rpe.n bottom refractor are ofiered
with I20 volt, high rcactance or 240 volt reactor
ballasts lor use with 100, 175, or 250 watt mercury
lamps (aJJ ballasts are normal power factor). The
Star Lux head is also olTered without ballasts for use
with 92 405 watt multiplt' incandescent street lighl,
ing lamps, or Jor 400-watt mercury lamp with remotr:
ballast, and appropriate glassware.
Rellector glasswale combinations include a choice
of l2-inch diametcr open bottom refractor typc, 10-
inch or 1,1-inch dianrt:ter clamp band type or l4-inch
diameter automatic latch type with enclosed refrac
tor. The many interchangeable compone-nts and vari-
ations provide a propcr combination to produce any
dcsircd A.S.A.-I.ll.S. distribution type, in an arrange-
ment most suitable for virtually any application.

New Star Lux Series 2330 Luminaire typical appli-

farms, homes, and roadside businesses, the Star-Lux
Luminaire with open bottom refractor is also availa-
ble in a conplete Revere OBR All Purpose "Dusk to-
Dawn" Lighting Package described fully in Rcvere

DESIGNED FOB SAFETY
'Ihe removable top covcr design of the Revere Star-
Lux Luminaire complctely eliminates the possibility
of a short circuit betwccn line terminals through the
reflector. (Line terminals are always "hot" on photo-
control actuated units. ) On conventional fixtures
such short circuits are a hazard, especiallv when the
rcflector glass assembly is removed for servicing. The
removable top cover also permits easy replacernent
of any component should it becomo necessary.

Slip fitter is completely enclosed, integrally cast with
luminaire head. It provides a close fit with the pipe
and smooth, attractive appearance. Slips 1{" pipe
size. Slip fitter for 2" pipe is available on special
order.

Top cap is oi die cast aluminum. Cap is fastened to
head by two stainless steel scr:ews, made captive by
staking into the cap to prevent loss during installa-
tion. Precision frt between top and cap, together with
an internal flange on the head provides a watertight
closure without requiring gasket.
Socket bracket for 1,l-inch luminaires is designed
for 7" L.C.L. incandescent multiple and mercury
lamps.
Socket bracket for 12-inch open bottom refractor is
designed for 5y4" L.C.L. incandescent multiple and
5" mercury lamp, or 7" L.C.L. incandescent multi-
ple lamp. Proper socket bracket is furnished, depend
ing on the catalog number.
Reflector (not illustrated) varies in size and shape
depending on type of reflector glassware assembly se-
lected. Reflector for lO-inch and 14 inch luminaire
is Alzak aluminum; reflector for open bottom refrac,
tor luminaires has anodized finish.

Universal ballast mounting bracket is made of %"

to provide proper L.C.L. as required (See lll) .
Socket bracket for 1O-inch luminaire is designed for
5y1" L.C.L. incandescent multiple lamps.

Alt wiring connections, including line terminals, are
readily accessible with top cover removed- Atl in-
ternal wiring is stranded, silicone insulated heat-
resistant wire.

1'he Revere OBR All-Purpose, "Dusk to Dawn"

Lighting Package olTers the most economical
means of providing aulomatically controlled dusk-
to-dawn lighting for a wide range of rural and
private lighting applications. Installation can bc
quickly made on any wooden pole, using existing
120 or 21O volt lines. The unit comes completely
packaged with evcrything required to complete
an installation:
(1 ) luminaire with pre-wired receptacle for photo
control, plus apprcpriate Iamp and built in pre
wirqd ballast for mercury lighting, or without
ballast and lamp for incandescent lighting (mul
tipleonly); (2) photocontrol; (3) upswept bracket
of hot dipped galvanized steel or aluminum in
30" or 4-Ft. sizcs, and (4) mounting hardwarc.
The carton has grip slots for easy handling. It
simplifies ordering, stocking, and invcntory.
The Series 2330 OBR luminaile is ruggedly con-
structed with a precision die-cast aluminum head
with a removable top cover. The hcad meeJs all
existing E.E.I. NEMA standards. It features an in-
tegral, completely enclosed 1%" slip fitter and pre
wired, locking-type rtr:r:ptacle for photocontrol.
Thr-'removable top cover oJ the Series 2330 OBR
luminaire provides easy access to all wiring con
ncctions, including line tcrminals, simplifving and
speeding installation. Terminals are completely in
the open, and the ballast is arranged in the head
to allow ample room to bring in the supply wires.
All connections are made through thc tcrrninal
board no splices nrc required. The removable top
cover design also completely eliminates the possi-
bility of a short circuit betwcen line terminals
through the reflector. (Line terminals ate always
"hot" on photocontrol actuated units) . On conven
tional fixtures such short circuits are a hazard,
especially when thc reflector-glass assembly is
removed for servicing. The removable top cover
a)so permits easy replacement of any component
should it become necessary.
Ballast replacement in the Rcvert-'Series 2330
OBR lurninaire can be quickly and conveniently
accomplished. The complctc ballast assembly
which includes terminal board. ballast. and socket
mounted on universal moulting stlap is easily
-
removed from benealh by loosening two mounting
sclews. The ballast mounting arrangement is
cspecially designed to provide zrmple screwdriver
clearancc without intcrference from other com
ponents. Tbe uniquc alrangement also assures
optical aligament of the socket independent of
the ballast.

The Urbanoval Luminaire is the smallest of the Revere "family"

of end mounted oval mercury luminaires- It is designed for 100-, 175-,

Revere's Unitized Urbanoval Luminaire is one of a "family" of street lighting luminaires leaturing
graceful modern styling and self-contained constant-wattage or high power factor reactor ballasts.
No. 2500 Series Unitized Urbanoval luminaires are designed for 100-, 175-, and 250-watt mercury
lamps. Compact and highly efficient, they provide uniform, low level lighting most desirable for
residential areas ot secondary streets. Built-in ballast components substantially reduce installation
costs, in addition to long-term economy resulting from efficient design of the luminaire.

The Revere Endoval Luminaire is designed {or use
on all roadways where high levels of glare-free illumi-
nation are required. It uses the highly eficieni 11,000
and 21,000 lumen mercury lamps in a modem, stream-
lined, easily serviced unit. Reversible slip-fitters and
a choice of distribution patterns ofier complete flexi-
bility of application to various roadway widths.
High utilization of light is accomplished by means
of a modified parabolic reflector which provides the
vertical distribution without the use of any light-
absorbing horizontal pdsms. The vertical prisms bend
the light into the proper lateral distribution pattern.
The "W"-modification in the reflector minimizes the
reflection through the lamp arc tube and adds fruther
to the over-all efrciency of the unit.
This efficient reflector-glassware design results in
more uniform low luminaire brightness, reducing
glare.
All Revere Endoval Luminaires are available for
either Type II or Type III distribution, with 1/a irl.

EASY INSTALLATION AND SENVICING

The Revere Endoval Luminaire is light, strong,
and sturdy. Its size and shape are uniform and at-
tractive. The unique slip fitter design, ample wiring
area and simple terminal connections make for easier
instailalions.

Quick access to the interior is obtained through an

easy-working, rugged, spring loaded roller latch. The
hinged glassware swings down the moment latch is
lifted. Glassware can be left suspended or removed
for tub washing by merely lilting it ofi the slotted
holders. Stainless steel reflector holding clips quickly
release reflector if desired to remove for polishing.

'l'he basic luminaire consists of an aluminum hous-
ing, slip fitter, inner reflector, socket and glassware
with holding ring.
The housing is a smooth, strong, lightweight alumi
num alloy die c:rsting with leveling bosscs on the top
lo pcrmit the use of a carpenter's level for accuracy in
leveling. Slip fitters are detachable and available for
I li inch and 2 inch standard pipe size. Thcy may be
assembled either with the luminaire parallel to the
axis of the mast arm or rcversed to provide 10' up
ward tilt. 'I'he litter has a weather-prooI felt seal to
insulc a tight closure at thc housing and wcep holes
to climinatc accumulation of water. Leveling screws
provide vertical adjustment of the luminaire 4' above
or below normal.
The Alzak aluminum rcflcctor is die formed with a
(oinpound "W" modifled parabolic contour provid-
ing more uniform distribution and higher efficiency,
while at the samc time directing the light around the
lamp arc tube. Th.r reflector is hcld rigidly in place
by spring clips I'hich allow easy removal without
tcrrls for repJacement or cleaning. When replaced it
returns to the exact position with lespect to the glass
ware to achicve the accuratc A. S. A. I. E. S- distrihu-
tion pattern without glare. There is space provided
between the lcflector and housing to allo* more rapid

type socket is fastcned to the housing by a socket
strap provided with balronet slots for easy removal.

insulation to the electrical conductor.s.

Light distribution may be changed by lifting ofi one

The glassware is assembled in a die-cast aluminum
alloy ring positivelv aligned with the hinge, making
ccrtain that the glass is not under stress at any time.
A spring-lo:rded, roller action, adjustable latch pro-
vides positive closure against a thick, soft, weather-
proof gasket to seal out bugs, dust and blowing rain.
An Alzak alrrminum house-side shield is available

cast universal slip fitter for 7la" or 2" pipe

Wide stainless steel hinge accurately posi-
tions the lower housing to assure positive
locking with the upper housing. A stainless-
steel spring safety latch prevents accidental
disengagemenl of lhe hinge during servicing.
Ballast components (see ordering table for
electrical characteristics) are arranged in the
slip fitter housing so as to provide ample cir-
culation of air for cooling. Capacitors are
mounted against contoured, heat-conducting
pads for coolest operation. Ballast coils are
impregnated with high-temperature Class-F
insulation for long life.

Precision-cast aluminum spring-loaded auto-
matic latch assures proper aligament and
locking of upper and lower housings.
Refractor is molded of Corning's Pyrexo for
maximum resistance to impact and thermal
shock. Accurate system of light-controlling
prisms provide asymmetric Types II and
IU light distributions with clear mercury
lamps, and Types III and IV with phosphor-
coated lamps.
