Top 10 Goals of 2010 World Cup:

These goals are judged purely on the quality of the goal; not the situation in which
they were scored.

Honorable Mention: Diego Forlán (URU-GHA), Valter Birsa (SLV-USA), Brett Holman
(AUS-SRB), Sulley Muntari (GHA-URU), Chicharito (MEX-ARG)

10: Landon Donovan (USA-Slovenia)

Despite scoring the biggest goal in US soccer history, Landon’s nicest goal came
in the game before, vs. Slovenia. Dribbling near the end line, looking for a cross,
he hit a perfectly executed chip that caught everyone off guard, including the
Slovenian keeper!

9: Siphiwe Tshabalala (South Africa-Mexico)

Despite South Africa’s first round exit, they still impressed many at the World
Cup, with Tshabalala being one of the main reasons why. His biggest
contribution at the Cup was the first goal of the tournament when he lashed a
wicked left-footed strike into the top right corner of Oscar Perez’ goal. What a
way to start the tournament!

8: Mesüt Ozïl (Germany-Ghana)

Despite Germany’s many goals, there were none quite as impressive as Mesüt
Ozil’s against Ghana. After receiving a cross from Thomas Müller, he used his
first touch to lift the ball into the air before using his left foot to volley it past
Richard Kingson from about 20 yards. Exquisite!

7: Luis Suárez (Uruguay-Korea)

Suárez will no doubt always be remembered for his infamous handball that
stopped Ghana from getting to the semi-finals. Lost in all the hubbub about his
handball however, is the 7th nicest goal of the tournament against South Korea.
With 2 defenders between him and the goal, just inside the bottom left corner of
the18-yard box (If facing the Korean goal), he took a touch to his right before
curling (RB style) it around the defenders and off the post and in. Incredible!

6: Carlos Tevez (Argentina-México)

Before crashing down to Earth against Germany in the quarters, Argentina had
some great goals, their best goal coming from Carlos Tevéz against the second
ranked team from CONCACAF (Mexico). With the ball sitting a few yards out of
the 18-yard box, Carlitos ran onto the ball and lashed a hard, but curling strike
that evaded Oscar Peréz, sending El Tri packing.

5: Yasuhito Endo (Japan-Denmark)

The best set pieces came of the tournament no doubt came from the Nation of the
Rising Sun. With two stunning free kicks to knock Denmark out of the
tournament, the men in blue made a statement to the rest of the world. When it
comes to set pieces, Japan is as dangerous as anyone. Endo displayed that on
Japan’s second goal when he delicately curved the Jabulani around the Danish
wall and past Thomas Sorensen. What a masterpiece!

4: Diego Forlán (Uruguay-Germany)

All of Diego’s goals were quality, and it is no fluke that he was given the Ballon
D’or (Golden Ball), for the best player at the Cup. Of all his goals, his most
stunning came in the 3rd place game against Germany. Waiting like a predator in
the box, he pounced on a cross, acrobatically slashing the ball on a one hop into
Manuel Neuer’s net. Wow!

3: Keisuke Honda (Japan-Denmark)

The first of the two stunning free kicks from Japan, Keisuke Honda lined up from
close to 40 yards out of the Danish goal, and unleashed a left footed strike to stun
Denmark and put the Samurai Blues in front.

2: Fabio Quaglirella (Italy-Slovakia)

Despite Italy’s miserable showing in South Africa, Quagliarella produced one of

the best moments of the finals with his stunning chip. Outside of the 18-yard box,
with the goalie barely off the line, Quagliarella had the cheek to try and chip it
over the Slovakian keeper. And you know what? It worked. What a stunner!

1: Gio Van Bronckhorst (Netherlands-Uruguay)

Hands down the classiest goal of the tournament, and one of the best of all time.
It was a complete stunner scored by the Dutch captain from a seemingly
impossible angle, not to mention, like 35 yards out. Playing in his second to last
professional game, Van Bronckhorst made the whole world stop with this one.
The commentator really described it best, for it was “an absolute firecracker!”
