3 FSP 3000R7 Release 7.1.5 Jörg Schüttemeyer 20th July 2007

1 GENERAL REMARKS TO RELEASE 7.1.5

• Release date: 09.07.2007

• The Release 7.1.5 consists of
o new modules i.e. hardware for FSP 3000R7
o new SW for the Network Element
o new Element Manager
• The Network Element Software itself run on the NCU and contains all
software for the modules (FWP)
• The upgrade path which has been tested is from version 7.0.6F,
7.0.6H, 7.0.6I and 7.1.0 directly to version 7.1.5 only!
Notice: Any upgrades apart from this path may work as well but ADVA
will take no guarantee that the configuration settings will be taken
over in a clean way or that the update may cause service hits
although stated otherwise.
• Starting with version 7.1.x receiver dynamic ranges in specifications
of plugs (SFPs & XFPs) are taken into account for checking the
threshold ranges.
If optical input thresholds (OIP) for client or network facilities based
on plugs have been configured in a release < 7.1 all thresholds (OIP)
are set back to their default value (which is the upper and lower
power value according to the specification). So if monitoring of OIP is
required the thresholds need to be set right back after the update.

2 SUPPORTED FUNCTIONALITY

2.1 Interoperability

Mixed operation of FSP 3000R7 version 7.1.5 with 7.0.6x is allowed but not
recommended.
It is certainly needed during update but may result in alarming due to
different protocol specifics.

Full functionality of release 7.1.5 is only available for a homogeneous

network with 7.1.5 version only.

Interoperability of FSP 3000R7 with other FSP products (FSP 1500, FSP 150,
FSP 2000, FSP 3000R6) is not tested fully and therefore not released.

2.2 Data Rates and Services

• Core-, Access- and Enterprise Transport:

WCC-PCTN-10G-V and WCC-PCTN-10G-LN
(note that WCC-PCTN-10G-LN is not available until further
notice)

2.3 Network Structure

• Topologies:
o Point-to-Point, Point-to-Multipoint, Linear Add/Drop, Ring,
Hubbed Ring and Feeder
o Support of up to 20 nodes within single subnet
o Support of up to 100 nodes in entire network

• Optical structure:
o 8 Channel CWDM, 64 Channel DWDM (100 GHz grid)
o 80 Channel DWDM point to point (100 GHz grid)
o Support of CWDM / DWDM Hybrid system configurations

2.4 Protection Mechanism

• Versatile Switched Protection (line):

There are different layers of versatile switched protection available.
Versatile switched protection is based in general on switching devices
trailing the terminating channel module. This scheme of versatile
switched protection is based on the use of a pilot signal to provide
information about the integrity of the transmission fibre between two
switching modules. With this protection scheme it is therefore possible
to protect a single transmission fibre. Due to the use of a pilot signal it
is not possible to cover Inline Amplifier Sites or Optical Add-/ Drop
Multiplexer Sites in between

• Versatile Switched Protection (group):

There are different layers of versatile switched protection available.
Versatile switched protection is based in general on switching devices
trailing the terminating channel module. To eliminate the need for a
pilot signal this solution of versatile switched protection makes use of
the OSC channel to provide information about the end-to-end integrity
of the transmission path. With this protection scheme it is therefore
possible to protect an end-to-end transmission path with Inline
Amplifier Sites or Optical Add-/ Drop Multiplexer Sites in between

• Channel Protection:
Channel Protection allows to protect not only the transmission fibre but
also doubles the terminating interface thus increasing the level of
protection. Two independent network interfaces of the same channel
module can be provisioned within a protection group to build a
redundant path to the client service.

• Channel Card Protection:

Channel Card Protection allows to protect not only the transmission
fibre but also doubles the terminating equipment thus increasing the
level of protection. Two channel modules can be provisioned within a
protection group to build a redundant path to the client service.

5 FSP 3000R7 Release 7.1.5 Jörg Schüttemeyer 20th July 2007

• Client Layer Protection:
Client Layer Protection is supported by the different modules available
within the FSP3000R7.
All module settings necessary to support this are derived and
configured on the modules if client layer protection is provisioned

2.5 Management Interfaces

• Local Access:
The Network Element can locally be accessed from the NCU via
serial/USB interface or Ethernet RJ45 ports.
Note: For the USB interface a special driver for Windows is needed.

• With Release 7.1 a new NCU is introduced which supports two Ethernet
interfaces with different IP addresses.
With this the external DCN connection to the NCU can use one
interface – the connection from the NCU to the OSC can use the
second.
So the IP Address for accessing the NCU can now be chosen
independently of the IP subnet of the OSC Ring – which is useful
especially for redundant DCN access to a Network Element cloud.

2.6 Management Software - Security

• Radius authentication support which allows a centralized user

management

• Deactivation of local Ethernet DCN access ports:

The local Ethernet access ports of the NCU and OSCM modules can be
deactivated to secure them against un-authorized on-site access

• Secure Shell & Copy (SSH, scp):

SSH & scp are supported for secure access to the NE via encrypted
connections.

• HTTPS is supported for the WEB interface

• SNMPv1 Authentication Trap:

SNMPv1 authentication traps are supported for monitoring
unauthorized login attempts via SNMPv1.

• Configurable access to IP applications (FTP, SNMP,TL1, WEB,…):

The access to the build-in IP applications can be controlled via the
Craft user interface.
Please note that for release 7.1.5 TL1 can NOT be enabled

• Creation/deletion of new users:

Users can now be created/deleted and assigned to predefined levels of
access rights.
Note: Passwords are treated case-insensitive (except Linux login)

6 FSP 3000R7 Release 7.1.5 Jörg Schüttemeyer 20th July 2007

2.7 Management Software - General

• System time synchronization via Network Time Protocol (NTP):

The time within one FSP3000R7 system domain will be synchronized
using the NTP protocol.
NTP communication will work as well taking the system IP Address i.e.
in redundant DCN communication environment (using OSPF).
Note: The NTP protocol can not be activated through the TL1
interface.

• Update NTP configuration to match modified daylight saving time in US

and Australia:
New daylight saving time rules beginning of 2007 are already
implemented.

• Fault & Database change log:

Two change logs are supported to be able to monitor the history of
faults as well as database changes.

2.8 Management Software – Fault & Alarm Handling

• Alarms for Equipment Removal or Mismatch:

A mismatch between provisioned equipment (module, plugs etc.) and
physically inserted equipment will lead to a Mismatch Equipment Alarm
(MEA).
The removal of provisioned equipment will lead to an unequipped
alarm (UEQ).

• Fault Cause Persistency Filter (FCPF) for all autonomous alarms:

A FCPF filter will filter any alarms which are present below a specified
soak period to reduce alarm flooding.
With release 7.0.1 and 7.0.2 fixed soak periods as defined in the
respective ITU standard are supported (2.5s time before raising an
alarm, 10s before clearing an alarm)

• If a module is identified as not having the correct FWP version

delivered with the NE software it is alarmed.
Depending of the service implication during update the alarm is
differentiated in a service affecting (SA) or non service affecting (NSA)
FWP mismatch alarm.

• Trace Monitoring for SDH & Sonet & OTN interfaces supported.
SDH/SONET interfaces will support Regenerator Section (RS)/Section
trace (J0) only. The RS/Section trace will be supported in accordance
with [G.707], [G.783] and [GR253].
OTN interfaces will support trace in OTU SM, ODU PM and activated
ODU TCMs (TCM1..6) in accordance with [G.709] and [G.798].

• Threshold Crossing Alarms for Optical Input Power on plugs will now
take the specification of the provisioned plug into account.
Limitation: Unfortunately this will lead to a removal of all user defined

7 FSP 3000R7 Release 7.1.5 Jörg Schüttemeyer 20th July 2007

thresholds on OIP in the database on update

Bug fixes:
- False elapsed time indication for 24h PM records has been corrected

2.9 Management Software - Update & Backup/ Restore

• Database Backup/Restore of ALL configuration settings (whole

database):
The NCU database can be saved and restored for the case of a
database being corrupted or a NCU failure and subsequent NCU
exchange. It is highly recommended to carry out a database backup
every time the system has been re-provisioned.
Note: Backup/Restore cannot be activated through the TL1 interface.

• Reset Database to factory defaults:

For the event of a corrupted database without an available backup file
it is possible to reset the database to its default settings.
Please be aware that resetting the database to factory defaults might
be service affecting depending on the current provisioning of the
modules. (i.e. if auto provisioning is set to “on”)

• Remote NCU Software Download via FTP protocol (NE is FTP client):
The NCU software can be downloaded remotely using the FTP protocol.
The NE must operate as an FTP client. Therefore the PC from which the
download is carried out has to operate as an FTP server.
FTP communication will work as well taking the system IP address i.e.
in redundant DCN communication environment (using OSPF).
Note: The NTP protocol can not be activated through the TL1
interface.

• Remote module software upgrades (firmware packages):

Firmware packages of FSP 3000R7 modules can be upgraded remotely

• Multiple FWP updates are supported to ease update of the FWP in the
whole network element. Multiple choices are offered:

o The user can select that all modules will be updated (regardless
if the update is SA or NSA) – exceptions are active modules in a
module protection group which need to be update after a
manual switch

o The user can select that only NSA updates will be executed
(including active & inactive modules of a module protection
group)

o The user can select that only a specific module type is updated
in the whole NE – including an option to take care for being
service affecting or not

• The new NCU allows exchanging the program and database completely
by exchanging the compact flash.

8 FSP 3000R7 Release 7.1.5 Jörg Schüttemeyer 20th July 2007

This can be used if the NCU needs to be exchanged in case of a HW
failure.

2.10 Management Software - Provisioning

• Database centric Network Element Management, complete provisioning

in the database of the Network Element:
The configuration of any module of a Network Element will be carried
out via the database. This has the advantage that a NE might be fully
pre-provisioned without any equipment being present on site.

• Telcordia compliant system modeling (entity handling, alarms

severities, state model, update handling...):
The management of a FSP 3000R7 Network Element follows the
requirements of a Telcordia compliant system modeling to ensure safe
and standards compliant operation of the network.

• Pre-Provisioning:
Any module of a FSP 3000R7 NE can be pre-provisioned in the
database without equipment being present on site. Once the
equipment is installed and registers itself to the NCU the configuration
of the equipment is carried out as provisioned autonomously.

• "Plug & Play" functionality for spare parts:

Faulty parts can be exchanged easily in the FSP 3000R7 as any spare
part exchanging a faulty module will be configured autonomously by
the database with the provisioned settings as the exchanged module.
Therefore no new configuration has to be carried out by the service
personnel on site.

• Forced Deletion shortcut for modules:

To simplify deleting of provisioned module (including all depending
entities) from the database a shortcut has been implemented which
deletes the module and all its dependent entities from the database in
one step.
Please be aware that this action is not sensitive to the administrative
state of the dependent entities. Only the administrative state of the
module itself is relevant for the availability of this feature. If the
deletion shortcut is unwanted this feature can be deactivated for the
common user

2.11 Management Software - Applications

• Functional & operational consistency across all management

applications (TL1, SNMP, WEB, craft) using central server approach:
The behavior of different supported management applications (SNMP
etc.) is consistent as all of these interfaces are using the same central
server (cserver) within the NCU software package as management
access point to the NE

• Unified User Management for WEB, TL1, craft and Linux login:
The user management of the different management applications is
unified, i.e. users created/ existent within one management application
are available within the other as well with the same settings

9 FSP 3000R7 Release 7.1.5 Jörg Schüttemeyer 20th July 2007

(passwords etc.)

• Slot/Shelf LED's reflect module alarm status:

The shelf and slot LEDs reflect the module alarm status of the NE/
module respectively depending on the administrative state.

• WEB GUI:
A WEB Graphical User Interface is available to access and manage a
single NE.
This WEB GUI allows to fully operate and provision the NE.
The WEB GUI offers a graphical rack view of the Network Element and
shows the Alarm status.
Note: Clicking on the appropriate shelf will open the detailed shelf
view. Clicking on a module in the shelf will open the alarm list for that
module.
• Historical Performance Monitoring values can be displayed in a
graphical way via the WEB GUI
• The WEB GUI is secured (using HTTPS).
Security Note: You should install the Network Element’s certificate in
your browser by checking the fingerprint from the browser against the
fingerprint in the Network Element (best using serial cable).

• Element Manager:
A separate SNMP based Element Manager software is available to
manage a NE with a graphical user interface.
As enhancements over the WEB GUI the EM features a graphical view
of the NE including visualization of module status as well as graphical
visualization of performance monitoring statistics.

New features/changes:
- configuration of System IP supported via EM
- comprehensive Element Manager help function added
- EM User manual can be launched from the EM

Bug fixes:
- false power level indication in the EM has been corrected
- Version and size indication problem during DB backup and
restore process has been solved

• SNMPv1 & v2 Interface:

SNMPv1 & v2 communication is supported as an interface to 3rd party
management software packages.

• SNMPv3 Interface:
SNMPv3 is supported only as a trap recipient format.
Authentication/Session handling and encryption is prepared and will
become available in a later release

• Configurable SNMP Trap Port:

The SNMP trap port is user configurable (default port# 161).

• TL-1 Interface:
TL-1 (Transaction Language #1) user interface according to Telcordia

10 FSP 3000R7 Release 7.1.5 Jörg Schüttemeyer 20th July 2007

specifications available.
Please note that TL1 is not available in Release 7.1.5

• AINS (Automatic In Service):

AINS suppresses alarm reporting for a configurable qualified
countdown period. AINS is supported as option for each equipment or
facility entity and as a global option in conjunction with auto
provisioning. The period setting is a global parameter.

2.12 In-band Management & Supervisory Channel

• OSC module (OSCM-E/W):

To exchange supervisory information throughout the system when no
other in-band communication channel is available an Optical
Supervisory Channel module is available with either one (OSCM) or
two (2OSCM) optical interfaces.
Multiple OSC modules are supported per NE with restrictions. See DCN
Config Guide for more.

• Support of DCN via OSC or ECC:

Locations not included in the ring (e.g. feeder) can be managed via the
embedded communication channel

• OSC/ECC independent from any payload channels:

The different DCN communication channels as supported in FSP3000R7
are operated independently from any payload channels being available
on the module or not, i.e. a client signal need not be available to
manage any NE from a remote NE.

• 10 ECC channels per NE will be supported

A total of 10 Embedded Communication Channels (e.g. DCC, GCC) for
the overlay DCN are supported/ can be routed by the NCU of a
Network Element.
Note: To be able to configure the ECC 6 to 10 you need to have
the first ECC’s (number 1 to 5) restricted to a bandwidth of
192kbit/s or less.

• Inter-Shelf Communication for ECC support in every shelf (except

extension shelves):
A module providing ECC capability to the NE may be placed anywhere
in any main shelf of the NE. Inter-shelf communication provides the
means for communication with the ECC routing entity.

• For Embedded Communication Channels the standard SDH or Sonet

DCC for Regenerator or Multiplexing Sections can be used.
Moreover for OTU Services the GCC0 and GCC1 & GCC2 can be used.

• DCN access ports individually monitored:

The different DCN access ports available can be individually monitored
and if necessary they can be deactivated individually.
It is possible to deactivate the serial line or to change the default baud
rate.

11 FSP 3000R7 Release 7.1.5 Jörg Schüttemeyer 20th July 2007

• Dynamic DCN routing:
The OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) routing protocol for dynamic
