Ketamine for Depression

Summary

Over the last fifty years, most of the medical institutions have considered ketamine as an

effective therapy for treating depression. Research has found that administration of a single dose

to patients reduces depression up to 14 days. Medical practitioners are following stipulated Commented [G1]: Deleted:a period of

therapeutic ethics to avoid harming their clients.

The evidence for the application of this therapy was identified in 2000 when a study was

conducted on seven patients. Six years later, medics noted that 71% of depressed clients had seen

a 50% drop in depression signs (Singh et al. 419). Since then, a fall in mental illness has also led

to a fall in the suicidal cases globally. Nevertheless, the scientists who are concerned with the

administration of this therapy have found that when the drug is misused, there is an emergence of

undesirable long-term effects like ulcerative cystitis among the patients. Commented [G2]: Inserted: mis

Ethical considerations regarding the application of ketamine range from clinical ethics,

research ethics, and health policies. The United States has enacted stringent rules that have

limited researchers to practice an intensive study on the treatment of depression (Taylor et al.

1271). On the other hand, society has encouraged the victims to undergo this therapeutic process

because the disorder can lead to shame, guilt, and stigma. Only 30% of the patients have feared

to seek medical attention on mental health. They are afraid of experiencing “brain damage”

(Taylor et al. 1272). Moreover, the aspect of autonomy among clients has enabled them to decide

whether to seek treatment or stay away from the psychoanalysis. On the other hand, innovation

process has benefited patients, families, and the whole society.

Thus, practicing professional virtue and integrity by the medical experts are among the

techniques and suggestions which health experts are doing to minimize harm on mentally

challenged patients. For effective use of ketamine, medics must follow proper rules needed for

its administration to avoid causing unwanted effects on individuals.

Reaction

Research which was done by health practitioners on the use of ketamine has proved that

most of the health sectors are improving the medical standards in the world. It is evident that

marvelous work is being done by medical fraternity to curb disorders which arise among the

patients.

The method of reducing depression has been only proven to be effective if the health

specialists follow the required procedures of the therapy. Therefore, the government of America

and those of other nations should subsidize on the costs which are incurred by patients while they

are undergoing such treatments. Hence, the process should be free in all the public institutions

(Taylor et al. 1271). On the other hand, the private health sectors should offer ketamine services

at low prizes so that all individuals can meet the medical costs incurred in treating depression.

Ethical considerations which have been highlighted regarding the administration of

ketamine therapies have helped doctors when they are treating depressed individuals. These

ethics have not only aided clinicians on how to treat their clients, but they have also directed the

entire society on how to stressed people (Taylor et al. 1272). The moral standards which have Commented [G4]: Inserted: ,

been recommended to curb mental illness, such as correct and timely dosage are requirements

which must be followed keenly by the depressed victims (Singh et al. 422). Furthermore, the

governments of various states must ensure that all the medical institutions are licensed before

they exercise ketamine therapy on mentally challenged people.

Summarily, patients who are experiencing mental problems should not be neglected in

any case. They must be given proper health care before their mental conditions worsen.

However, it is fundamental for the health specialists to give moral guidance to their patients

before treating them.
