Spur Gears - Are cogged wheels whose cogs or teeth project

radially and stand parallel to the axis.
2. Dedendum - The radial distance from the pitch circle to the
bottom of the tooth
3. Working depth – Depth to which a tooth extends into the space
of a mating gear when the center distance is standard. it is equal
to twice the addendum
4. Clearance - Refers to the radial distance between the top and
bottom of gears in mesh.
5. Addendum Circle – Addendum circle is the outer most profile
circle of a gear. Addendum is the radial distance between the
pitch circle and the addendum circle.
6. Dedendum Circle – Dedendum circle is the inner most profile
circle. Dedendum is the radial distance between the pitch circle
and the dedendum circle.
7. Tooth Space - The distance between adjacent teeth measured
on the pitch circle.
8. Top Land – it is the surface of the top of the tooth
9. Flank – That surface which is between the pitch circle and the
bottom land. The flank includes the fillet
10. Module - It is the ratio ok the pitch circle diameter to the
number of teeth
11. Face - The surface of the tooth which is between the pitch
circle and the top of the tooth
12. Face Width - Face width is length of tooth parallel to axes.
13. Fillet Radius - it is the radius that connects the tooth circle to the
profile of the tooth
14. Whole Depth – is the total length of a tooth space equal to the
sum of the addendum and dedendum
15. Chordal Tooth Thickness – Length of the chord subtended by
the circular thickness arc
16. Circular Tooth Thickness – is the distance from a point on one
side of a gear tooth to a corresponding point on the opposite side
of the same tooth, measured along the pitch circle
17. Pitch Circle – It is an imaginary circle which by pure rolling
action, would give the same motion as the actual gear
18. Pitch Diameter - The diameter of the Pitch Circle from which
the gear is designed. An imaginary circle, which will contact the
pitch circle of another gear when in mesh.
19. Diametral Pitch - A ratio of the number of teeth per inch of
pitch diameter
20. Bottom Land – it is the surface of the gear between the flanks
of adjacent teeth
21. Pressure Angle – Pressure angle describes the direction of the
force created by a driving gear acting upon its mate. It is the
angle between the pressure line and common tangent to pitch
circles. It is also called angle of obliquity.
22. Circular Pitch - The measured distance along the
circumference of the Pitch Diameter from the point of one tooth
to the corresponding point on an adjacent tooth.
23. Contact Ratio – Contact ratio is angle of angle of action and
pitch angle.
24. Root Diameter - The diameter at the Bottom of the tooth
25. Involute – is a curve obtained from another given curve by
attaching an imaginary taut string to the given curve and tracing
its free end as it is wound onto that given curve
26. Pinion – A pinion is a round gear and usually refers to the smaller
of two meshed gears.
27. Gear Ratio – the ratio of the turning speed of the powered
gear to that of the final gear
28. Addendum - The addendum refers to the distance from the top
of the tooth to the Pitch circle
29. Backlash - Backlash refers to the distance from the back of the
drive gear tooth to the front of driven gear tooth of gears mated
on the pitch circle.
