OPTIONAL TEXT: Any Nursing Drug Guide. I like Nursing Spectrum and Davis’ Drug Guide. Many students find
these at used book stores for a few dollars. Guides even a few years old are sufficient, as new drugs are slow
to market.

WEBSITE SUPPORT: We will also be using Canvas for grades, announcements and discussion board

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is required. It is the student’s responsibility to arrive on time, be prepared to learn,
actively participate and contribute to the class. It is your responsibility to notify the instructor if you are tardy
or leave early. You will be awarded 1 participation point if you are present for both attendance polls taken at
3 and 5 pm

CLASS PARTICIPATION: Lectures will be interactive. You are expected to come prepared by reading the
required text prior to class and completing both critical thinking and review questions. Each student should be
ready to actively participate in classroom discussion of critical thinking case studies and other material. Each
student is eligible for participation points by completing and submitting critical thinking case study worksheets

Quizzes and final exam will offer assessment of learning by using multiple-choice questions. The assigned drug
report will require research and the ability to present the material clearly and concisely.

Required: 6 light blue Scantrons® (50 questions on each side) Available at the OCC Bookstore and vending

If you miss a quiz due to tardiness or absence, you may make up the quiz within 7 days, but you will have a
20% reduction in points. No quiz may be made up more than 7 days after the quiz date. The final exam cannot
be made up. If you have a significant scheduling conflict, such as a family need, that will prevent you from
taking a quiz or exam on the scheduled date; you may make arrangements to take the quiz or exam early. To
arrange for an alternate testing day, you must notify the instructor at least 7 days before the scheduled date.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Identify and differentiate common drugs affecting each body system including their action, side effects, and
contraindications.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

This course is designed to offer a comprehensive overview of pharmacological interventions to those students
who are pursuing or may pursue a career in the healthcare field. At the completion of this course, the
successful student should be able to:

1. Explain the way drugs are standardized and be able to reference drug listings.
2. Describe common pharmaceutical preparations of drugs.
3. Explain the legal aspects of drug administration and governmental controls.
4. Explain the patient rights of medication administration.
5. Describe and differentiate the physiological utilization of drugs by the body, including
absorption, metabolism, and excretion.
6. Describe common drug categories and their intended uses.
7. Identify and differentiate certain drugs affecting the body systems including their actions, side
effects and contraindications.
8. Identify common drugs used in various body systems and for different disease processes.

Your instructor’s role is to teach and facilitate student learning through rigorous and demanding study and
practice. My areas of expertise for which I have been hired do not extend to counseling students regarding
their personal, financial, health and/or emotional problems. There are many resources available to assist
students experiencing problems of these types. Please do not ask me for medical advice. This means via e-
mail, during my office hours or during class time. This places me in a non-professional, and frankly,
uncomfortable position. I am employed by OCC as a professor/program director, not as a free health advice
nurse. This is also related to the liability issues related to my malpractice carrier. All health and psychological
concerns should be directed to your personal health practitioner. If you do not have one, please, contact the
