Global Warming

& Urbanization
By: Emily, Isabel, Willa, William, and Gabriel
Who Are We?
We are a group of AGS sophomores with the goal
of informing the local community on the effects
of global warming, keeping the global implications
in mind. We want to inspire others to take action
in their daily lives with a few simple steps to
reduce their individual carbon footprint.
TGPLAN Introduction
Think Globally, Plan Locally, Act Neighborly
Background Information
* What is Global Warming?
A gradual increase in the temperature of
Earth’s atmosphere causing weather changes
and shifts in precipitation patterns.

* What is Urbanization?
The process of an area growing in
population or taking on the characteristics
of a city.

Global Scale
Global warming causes the earth’s
climate to heat and weather patterns
to shift. Glaciers are melting, and sea
levels are rising, forests are burning, and
humans, plants, and animals are
being harmed in the process.
Local Scale
In Austin, average temperatures are increasing, and
drier conditions are expected in the summer which
could lead to serious droughts. There will be an
increase in days over 100 degrees (12 to 30).
It’s Important to Advocate!
Global warming is almost entirely
caused by human action. It’s important
to teach others about the effects of
global warming and their personal
carbon emissions so they can limit
their impact.

● Reuse Trash instead of throwing it away.
● Bike use instead of cars.

Take Action

- We took action by going to Zilker Elementary to teach 5th

graders about global warming, urbanization, and how to
reduce their personal carbon footprint.
- We developed a lesson plan with 3 fun activities to help the
kids learn about these topics in an engaging way.
#1 The Balloon Game
Objective: to simulate the effect of urbanization on the amount of
greenhouse gases emitted contributing to air pollution in a city.

#2 Bean Counting

Objective: to give students a realistic interpretation of their carbon footprint
and motivate them to reduce it by taking action in their everyday life.

#3 Small Group Situations

Objective: to use abstract situations and problem solving skills to teach
about global warming and urbanization while collaborating with a small
group.
Taken when the kids were planning on how they would
approach their situations.
All the kids were engaged and excited to participate in the
games we played.
Take Action Reflection
- At first we thought of hosting a protest or creating posters to hang up
around the community
- We got in touch with a teacher at Zilker Elementary and thought it would
be a great plan -- to inform the younger generation on global warming
- Miscommunication errors with teachers and school policy
- When we sorted out our plans, the lesson went well and the students
were interested and receptive
- We learned a lot from our experience at Zilker Elementary and hope they
learned from us
Call to Action
We hope that our take action
will inspire others to reduce
their daily emission of
greenhouse gases. Together we
can make the world cleaner and
more sustainable in the future.

Overall Reflection
TGPLAN taught us the devastating effects of global
warming, the ways we can take action in our everyday
lives, and how to advocate in the local community. We had
to collaborate with a group, conduct research, interview
experts, and coordinate our take action. TGPLAN has also
given us the tools we need to take further action in the
future.
