1989 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CONGRESS:

It is a great joy to welcome you to our 1989 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CONGRESS!

This year's theme, "Proclaim God's Glory," calls each of us to a deeper

realization of the great gift we have in our Risen Saviour ar.d the graces
which flow into our lives because we are truly a joyful Easter People.

Jesus reminds us vividly that the test of our real love for Him is in our love
for one another: "This is how all will know you for my disciples: your love
for one another!'' (Jn 13:35). The Father glorifies Jesus, the Son, in His
total self-giving through the Paschal Mysteries: suffering, death and
resurrection. You and I in turn are glorified by Jesus when we live out most
generously that great love of the Lord in our lives and when we turn and share
that love day in and day out with one another.

As teachers of our Catholic Faith and Tradition, we are called to "Proclaim

God's Glory" in all we are and in all we do: in our daily prayer and
reflection on the life of Christ within us, in our preparation for teaching
the Faith, and in our reaching out to all members of our communities in the
name of the Risen Jesus.

May this Risen Christ, who "makes all things new!", stir up in our hearts the
fullness of His love and re-make each one of us into His own image!

Please know of my prayers for each of you as we gather once again to give
glory to God in these days of sharing, learning, and celebrating.

Dear Friends,
It is a great joy to welcome all of you again to- Congress 1989!
Our theme, PROCLAIM GOD'S GLORY, is taken from reflection on the Readings
of the Fifth Sunday of Easter. These words challenge us to share the
Good News with courage, conviction and in a spirit of joy. The energy to
proclaim the WORD comes from a deep trust in God's resurrected power at
work in us and in our world.
As Religious Educators, we give witness that it is possible to open our
hearts to the transforming Gospel message and, in turn, help transform the
world and make it new. This is our challenge and responsibility.
The Religious Education Congress is a wonderful opportunity for us to
gather as Church and be stretched and renewed by participating in a wide
variety of workshops, talks, music, shared experiences and Worship Services.
We welcome you again to this faith-filled celebration, and trust that our
time together may indeed be a PROCLAMATION OF GOD'S GLORY.

today's church.

The days have been designed especially for you. Four packed days of outstanding national
speakers articulating a variety of timely topics on over 190 workshops. You will find education
and clarity, be challenged and inspired, and, celebrate in Eucharistic Liturgy, Prayer Service and
musical concert.

Included in the Registration Guide Book is specific information on ground and air transportation
services, hotel/motel listings and the latest Anaheim Area Map; all meant to help you in planning
your days with us. More than anything else, however, we urge you to communicate with others
that the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress is the most inspiring yearly event in the
United States.

I hope that you will be able to talce part in Proclaiming God's Glory as I look forward to
welcoming you.

PASTORAL MINISTRY WITH HANDICAPPED PEOPLE

Pastoral Ministry with Handicapped People (Archdiocese of Los
Angeles) takes this opportunity to invite all handicapped people to
attend the Religious Education Congress, It will be a joyous,
informative, love-filled celebration of ourselves as one Church.
This year, there will be 4 workshops of special interest to
handicapped pople and those involved in ministry Lo handicapped
people.
Of course, all the workshops of the entire weekend are open to the
handicapped. Any special assistance, e.g. interpreters, guides or
other helps, will be provided at no extra charge. On Saturday
evening there will be a Mass in sign language. The arena Masses
on Sunday will be interpreted. Everything possible will be done to
assure that our handicapped people can participate in the Religious
Education Congress.
INTERPRETERS FOR THE DEAF AND GUIDES FOR THE
BLIND will be available during the Congress and on Youth Day.
IMPORT ANT: If an attendant is accompanying you both
registration forms should be mailed together. This would assure
you of having the same workshops. If you need an interpreter or
guide, you MUST fill in the form below and return it with your

prayer as we bring our weary minds and bodies once again before
a loving God. Barbara Bridge, Tony Heim and Dominic
MacAller will lead us in this last prayer of the day before we
close our eyes in sleep.

Steve Croskey and VISION
Steve Croskey and VISION, a contemporary music Christian
group, from Phoenix, Arizona, may be a familiar name for Southern
Californians. Steve, originally from Los Angeles, moved to
Phoenix six years ago to take a position as a parish Youth Minister.
Steve is currently the Associate Director of Young Adults and
Rory Cooney -Proclaim God's Glory-more than words and
music, proclaiming is our way of life. We bring our whole lives,
passionate, dull, clinging, questioning , searching, to our morning
prayer and look for God's presence there in the midst of it. Join
Rory Cooney, Gary Daigle and friends as we begin an enriching
day remembering who God is for us.
 8:30 a.m. KEYNOTE travels extensively both with Fountain Square Fools and alone,
ADDRESS performing in concerts, giving guitar lessons, playing at liturgies
Sister Francesca Thompson, OSF and conducting retreats. His current recording, published by GIA,
Assistant to the Dean, Associate "Hymns and Hers for Happy Hearts" reflects one of his favorite
Professor Afro-American Studies, activities, working with children; Greg Hayakawa, a long time
Department of Communications, friend of Congress and member of the Congress Liturgy and Music

Francesca received her Ph.D., Coordinator for the Contemporary Ensemble at St. Monica Parish in
Theatre/Speech, Univ. of Santa Monica. He is a liturgical composer whose credits include "I

PROCLAIMING GOD'S GLORY: REBIRTHING
JESUS IN OUR WORLD
We arc called and therefore have a vocation to "rebirth Jesus" in
our world. In spite of the existing difficulties and monumental
obstacles, we, as Christians and followers of Gospel directives,
must respond differently to the needs of our society because we are
different. How identifiable arc we as Christians and how much can
we legitimately claim to be followers of the Jesus of the Gospels?

God's glory in our life. Our challenge for
this day is to celebrate God's presence with
us , and to strengthen each other so that we
can tell the world of the many incredible

OVERVIEW
Youth day will kick off with the music of STEVE CROSKEY and his group VISION, whose music has brightened youth gatherings around
the nation. The opening session will feature the FOUNTAIN SQUARE FOOLS, a creative theater group whose message and humor have
been experienced throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Joining the "fools" will be Santa Barbara's own RALPH WEST who
will combine laughter and challenge in a message about God's Glory!

After the opening session, participants will attend their morning workshops. Following our first round of workshops, Archbishop Mahony
will celebrate liturgy in the Arena and Bishop McFarland will celebrate a special liturgy for the youth from the diocese of Orange in the
Marriott Hotel. The arena liturgy will feature a choir made up of youth from throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles directed by TOM
RATIO. Participants will attend their afternoon workshops following the lunch break. Our celebration will close with exciting rallies! In
the arena we will feature TRISHA WATTS, an exciting musician who comes to us from Australia, and STEVE CROSKEY and VISION.
The Marriott Hotel will be the site for the Diocese of Orange rally featuring TOM FRANZAK, a popular Contemporary Christian artist and
favorite of many Youth Days. There's something for everyone at Youth Day '89- be part of it!

WORKSHOP INFORMATION
A. SURVIVAL TACTICS FOR TEENS
Clayton Barbeau
The topic is survival tactics for teens negotiating the perilous path
of puberty, meeting up with the challenges of adolescence,
including but not limited to coping with parental middlescence,
declarations of independence, confronting the great questions of
Who, What and Why with some sidelights on putting oneself
together while the earth quakes.
H. SO, YOU WANT TO BE ON TELEVISION
Rev. Dale J. Fushek
Fr. Fushek is Vicar of Worship for the Diocese of Phoenix,
Arizona. He is founder of the Life Teen Program, a weekly 30
minute program which airs on over 400 cable networks around the
country. This is your chance to be ON television ... and at the
same time ... learn more about what it means to be Catholic, and
why the Mass is so important to us.

B. AM I AND GOD COMPATIBLE? J. CAN'T SIT DOWN I

Bob Bartlett
Bob currently works at the Catholic Education Center in St. Paul,
Minnesota, in the areas of Youth Catechesis and Sexuality. In this
workshop, Bob will invite young men and women to reflect on their
patterns of sexuality and intimacy in order to gain insight into
which patterns are healthy and which are not. .
C. DO YOU WANNA HAVE A "GLORY BODY"?
Sr. Kathy Bryant, R.S.C.
Want to give glory to God by being totally alive? You are the
billboard proclaiming God's Glory. You've got the goods, the guts,
the heart; just do it! In this workshop, Sr. Kathy, Director of Sister
Vocations for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, will explore ways to
be more human about sharing your gifts with others. You don't
have to be 21 or older to do what Jesus did!
Jerry Goebel
A self-employed speaker and musical performer, this familiar
speaker will cover Funlc, Blues, Ballads, and straight forward Rock
and Roll in this workshop. It will be a chance to hear God's Glory
Proclaimed at your metabolism rate.

Productions, is a high energy presentation which explores the
dynamics behind the rapid fire choices that can change our lives,
and offer practical advice for students on making the most of their
options.
E. WHEN YOU CARE ENOUGH TO SEND THE VERY

Judy Casar
Presently coordinator of the Confirmation Process of the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Judy will explore that how we feel
about ourselves affects our relationships and our entire lives. This
workshop will focus on self-esteem, why we feel the way we do
about ourselves and how to improve our outlook.
Rev. Don Kimball
Fr. Don is currently Program Director of Cornerstone Media and for
18 years has been Disc Jockey/Host of the weekly rock music show
REFLECTION: music with a Message. In his workshop, Fr. Don
will show us that some songs have good values, some have negative
values, and some just feel good. What are popular songs telling us
about ourselves? The better we know ourselves, the better we

M. NO GUTS, NO GLORY- PROCLAIMING GOD'S LOVE
FOR US
Tony Melendez and Robert Cowne (Captain Ilob)
Tony, born without arms, plays 12 string guitar with his feet and is
an .internationally known recording artist. composer and speaker.
Captain Bob, a youth minister for 19 years, is Youth Minister for 4
parishes and Chairman of the Youth and Young Adult Advisory
Council for Monterey Diocese. Through music, witnessing and
sharing their gifts, Tony and Bob will show that to PROCLAIM
GOD'S GLORY is to use your individual giftedness for Him and to
do so, you must have the GUTS to overcome obstacles placed in

N. WE HEAR YOU! - YOUTH LISTEJ\'ING SESSION
Brian Reynolds
Brian, director of the Center for Youth Ministry Development and
creator of the Christian Leadership Institute will challenge the
questions that youth have: "What is my place in the Church?"
"Why does everyone keep telling me I'm the future of the Church?"
This workshop, which will continue through both sessions, will be
an opportunity for youth to be seen and heard as they reflect on and
discuss their present role in the church. Participants will be
involved in prioritizing issues of concern for young people. We ask
that at least two youth from each parish or school group would sign
up for this session.

R. ENHANCING RELATIONSHIPS
Ralph West
Ralph has been the Director of Student Ministries at Trinity Church
for the past four years. In this workshop Ralph will explore the
BANNERS
The theme of Congress '89 - PROCLAIM GOD'S GLORY,
should be an inspiration for many groups, youth, family, parish,
cultural, and others, to design and enter a banner in this year's
competition. Cash prizes of $50, $25, and $15 will be awarded.
The requirements for the banner are as follows:
1. SIZE: Approximately 4 ft wide by 6 ft. long.
2. MATERIAL: Felt, burlap, sailcloth, or any sturdy
material.
3. POLE: A pole or rod across the top strong
enough to support the banner.
4. FIREPROOFING:The Convention Center requires
that all banners be fireproofed. Check the
Yellow Pages under"fireproofing," or you may
fireproof your banner. There are several
products available , and the name of the product
used must be attached to the back of the banner.

patterns of behavior. Faith as trust in God and others will be shown
as key to the movement from anxiety to glory.

aware of God's glory but those realities in our life and world that

THE APOSTLE PAUL: NEW UNDERSTANDINGS OF AN

Recent biblical scholarship has indicated that there is another way
of understanding Paul; one which secs his "conversion" as a call,
his message as largely rooted in Phaiasaic Judaism, and his efforts
as aimed at saving pagan Gentiles from almost certain
condemnation. This workshop will explore this new perspective
on Paul, and will also consider its consequences for modem
religious educators.

We want lo live well, we want to be morally upright. But how lo
do that? This workshop will clarify the shape of good, balanced,

CONVERSION (IS)
However varied conversion experiences
are, they all seem to share three features: Breaking away, breaking
down and breaking through. These characteristics are illustrated in
stories which are based on scriptural passages and which can be
used for both catechetical and homiletic purposes.
POWER OF ORDINARY HEALING (90)
Stories based on Jesus' healing miracles serve to illustrate the
"ordinary" power every person has to heal in an extraordinary way.
These stories have been used in a variety of settings and illumine
the meaning of scriptural passages in new and startling ways.

and Faith Education at Harvard Divinty

THE TRANSFORMATION OF FAITH
IN YOUNG ADULTHOOD (40)
This workshop will explore faith development of young adults
(ages 18-35) and how it relates to ongoing adult growth, with
particular implications for mid-life. It will include a discussion of
the catechetical issues that are most significant for today's younger
adult, especially in light of contemporary American society.
Implications and practical suggestions for our ministry with young
singles and couples will be offered.
MINISTRY TO YOUNG ADULTS: THE POWER OF

This workshop will focus on the theory of moral growth and will
present practical teaching strategics that work in the elementary
classroom.

This workshop will focus on the theory of moral growth and will
present practical teaching strategies that work in the elementary
classroom.

OF LECTIO DIVINA (SO)
This session will look at prayer as a faith response, the practical
ways of building faith, and the early Christian way (adapted for
our times) of praying daily with the Gospels.
CENTERING PRAYER: CONTEMPLATION FOR EVERY
CHRISTIAN (6M)
This session wll present an ancient form of Christian prayer in a
renewed form which enables anyone to open to the contemplative
experience of God.

Dr. Pilch is a Biblical scholar,
international speaker and author. He has
been a facilitator ofparish missions and
leads study tours to Greece, Turkey and
Israel. He has written six books and many
articles.

To proclaim the Christian story
authentislly, the evangelizer needs to know
it well and to be creatively faithful to the
tradition. Jesus' advice to his disciples
(Matt. 10) suits modem evangelizers as well.

Our culture has laws on whipping children but Ben Sirach (30) and
the wisdom tradition recommend physical punishment. This is a
shocking peek into the culture of our ancestors in the faith. What

Sr. Po/cino is in private practice and
consultant to her own community, Medical
Mission Sisters. After Surgical Residency
in Pennsylvania, she worked ten years in
Karachi, Pakistan and Dacca, Bangladesh.
Sr. Polcino has lectured to religious, clergy
and laity nationally and internationally.
HOLISTIC HUMAN SEXUALITY (3S)
A theology of human sexuality affirms in a
positive way the wholeness of embodied
persons, the goodness of sexual pleasure,
the creative significance of the sexual self
and a healthy spirituality which is reflectively present to one's own

The meaning of ministry is service. Christian community regards
ministry as a response made possible because of special gifts
bestowed by the spirit in the members of the human community.
All are in the ministry to self. To be responsible to take care of

The key to faith development for junior
high youth is their understanding and
identification with Jesus. In this workshop we will share practical
ideas for generating this understanding and identification among
junior high youth in our religion classes.
MAKING MORALITY MEANINGFUL FOR JUNIOR HIGH
YOUTH(7R)
Effective education in morality for this age group must be carefully
adapted to the needs, limits and capacities they posess. This
workshop will explore practical approaches to be used in the
religion class that meet these criteria.

and socially. Often they tum to drugs, alcohol and tragically,
suicide, just to cope. This workshop will describe the child's
grieving process and concrete ways the effective educator can be of
assistance.

When there is a death, divorce, chemical dependency or any other
painful crisis within a family, we as Church need and want to
respond. Holding us back from ministering is our fear of stepping
in where we may not be wanted, not having the "right words" or

El tema escogido para este aiio, "Proclamen la Gloria del Senor," nos llama
a cada uno de nosotros a profundizar acerca del gran regalo que tenemos en
nuestro Jesus Resucitado y de las gracias que enaman en nuestras vidas
porque somos realmente un pueblo que se regozija en esta epoca de Pascua de
Resurrecci6n.

Jesus nos recuerda vivamente que la verderadera prueba de su amor por El

hagan lo mismo que Yo hice con ustedes: lamensen los unos a los otros!"
(Juan 13:35.) El Padre glorifica a Jesus, su Hija, en su entrega total por

proclamar la PALABRA v1ene de una fe profunda del poder resuc1tado de D1os,

Guadalupe-Villa de la Paz. Esta es un
Centro de retiros y espiritualidad, tanto
como un ccntro de rehabilitacion para
jovenes que tiencn problemas con drogas,
alcohol, sus familias, y otros tipos de
problcmas. El padre Jensen es el
fundador de la Casa Comboni, que es
un seminario para hispanos. Tambien ha

Ministerio de J6venes Hispanos, y Director Asociado de Servicios

procesaran pero Ud. no rccibira los bolctos ni tarjeta para el
programa por correo, sino quc tendra quc recogcrlos en la
Mesa de Inscripciones en el lado norte de la Sala de
Exhibiciones ( Norlh ExhibiLion Hall) del Centro de
Convenciones.
Preinscripci6n hasta cl 1 de Marzo 1989. Sc aceptaran
inscripciones dcspues del 1 de Marzo pero la cuota sera $30.
NO HABRA DEVOLUCION DE CUOTAS DESPUES
DEL 1 DE MARZO. Los bolctos y tarjctas para el prograrna
se cnviaran por correo dcspues de dicha fecha.

INSTRUCCIONES GENERALES
1.Escriba CON LETRA DE MOLDE su nombre completo en
el cspacio destinado para tal fin. USE LETRA DE
MOLDE.
a) Religiosas: Incluya su apellido patemo.
b) Sacerdotes, Diaconos, Religiosos y Religiosas:
Incluya su tltulo con su nombre (R. P., Hno, Hna, etc.)
2. Escriba CON LETRA DE MOLDE su direcci6n, estado,
zona postal , numero de telefono. \
3. Cuota de inscripci6n: La cuota de $25 de Preinscripci6n
es para que uno asista a todo o parte del Congreso.
Favor de hacer su cheque a nombre de RELIGIOUS
EDUCATION CONGRESS. Despues dcl 1 de Marzo la
cuota de inscripcion extemporanea sera $30.00. (Los
seminaristas y las novicias rcligiosas tendran una cuota
especial de $10.00.) Dcspucs del I Marzo de 1989 NO
HABRA DE VOLUCION DE CUOTAS.
4. Horarios de las Sesiones: El horario completo de la
sesiones aparece en las paginas 23-25.
Cada sesion tiene como identificacion dos numeros. El
primer numero indka cl pcriodo y el segundo, la sesi6n
determinando. Ponga en SU tarjeta cl numcro de las
sesion de acuerdo a su primera, segunda y tercera
prefcrencia para cada periodo. Los numeros aparecen en
la tarjeta.
5. NOTAlMPORTANTE: Si Ud. habla solamente espaiiol y
desea confcrencias unicamente en espanol, marque el
cuadrito en la forma de inscripci6n que dice: "Hablo
solamente Espanol." Sise agotan los boletos para las
confcrencias en cspanol, se le regrcsara su cheque e
inscripci6n y no recibira Ud. boletos para conferencias
en ingles.

Los boletos para las sesiones que no se han llcnado se pueden
conseguir en la mesa de inscripcioncs.
Alli podra cambiar sus boletos durantc cl Congrcso con la
excepci6n del viemcs por la maflana.
NOTA: No sercmos responsables por boletos perdidos .
MUY IMPORTANTE ! ! Cada persona que asista a las sesioncs

CENTRAL DE RECADOS
De ser neccsario quc sus familiares o amistadcs se pongan en
contacto con Ud. en cualquier momento durante el Congreso,
pueden hacerlo durante las horas de 9 de la manana y 6 de la tarde
llamando al telHono (714) 490- 2889 y dejando recado. Tambien
Ud. puede dejar recado en la Central de Recados para pcrsonas con
quiencs dcsee Ud. comunicarse.
IMPORTANTE!! UN RECORDATORIO ...
Todos, desde luego, queremos mucho a nuestros hijos. Sin
embargo, nuestro CONGRESO es un EVENTO PARA ADULTOS
y por lo tanto no hay campo suficiente en los salones para acomodar
en las sesiones a mas gente que la que fuc asignado. Por
consiguiente, si usted trae a sus hijos a Anaheim, le pcdimos que
planifique otras actividadcs, fuera de las instalaciones del Centro
de Convenciones para ellos micntras quc ustcd asiste a las sesiones .

first time, we are adding this "aid" for filling in the registration
form. PLEASE ... even if you have attended previous
Congresses., check this list to make sure your form is properly
filled out. IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT TO DO IT RIGHT,
AND COULD SAVE HOURS OF PROCESSING TIME.

1. Print your name and address.
2. Include ZIP CODE and phone number.
3. Choose your workshops (3 choices).
4. Enclose the correct amount of money.
5. Make checks payable to Religious
Education Congress.
6. SIGN YOUR CHECK.
DO NOT .......... ..
1. DO NOT xerox copies of registration form.
2. DO NOT register two people on one form.
3. DO NOT repeat the period number before the
letter. (Period number is already printed on
the form.)
4. DO NOT clip or staple your check to the
registration form.
5. DO NOT expect the Congress Office to make
changes in workshop after you have
registered. (You may exchange tickets for
any sessions remaining after Friday noon on
the Congress weekend.)

Tickets will be mailed to you after March 1. 1989. READ ALL
MATERIALS THAT ARE SENT WITH TICKETS. PROGRAMS
WILL BE GIVEN AT THE PROGRAM BOOTHS, NOT THE

4. No asegure ni engrape su cheque a la tarjeta
de inscripci6n.
5. No espere que la Oficina del Congreso le cambie las talleres
despues de inscribirse. (Podra cambiar sus boletos par cualquier
otra sesion que tenga cupo el viemes de Congreso despues del
mediodia.
RECUERDE ...... .
Los boletos se enviarlfu par correo pero solo hasta despues del 1 de
Marzo 1989. Lea todo el material que se le envfa con las boletos, y
recoja su programa en la Casilla de Programas-NO EN LA
MESA DE INSCRIPCIONES.
